$1200 to New York is a pretty great deal. Holding out for some good business class deals though.

    • +3

You are better off getting this deal and pay cash to upgrade - I paid $500 USD from SFO to MEL in United from Economy to Business.

Currently the "best" deals there are would be with ANA from SYD-SFO via HND which is around $6000 return in Business.
Asiana from SYD-ICN-JFK for $6500 return in Business.
Philippine Airlines from MEL/SYD to SFO for $4500 return in Business.

      • Thanks for that info. Any intel on business tickets with Qantas to the US in general?

        • +1

Nothing as of yet, they did just have a sale where it was $5000 return to LAX.

          • @AircraftFreight: Wow I missed that, would've been awesome. Was it on OzB or Flightfinder?

            • +1

@pharcyde: Just a normal Qantas Sale, $8,000 return to London in Business as well - but no, I dont think OzB have the appetite for $5000 airfares lol

      • How did you pay for the upgrade?

        • They offer upgrades on the app in the lead up to your flight. Subject to availability.

Selected a random date to/from brisbane and Air Canada came up as nearly $70 cheaper, still one stop and over two hours less total travel at least on outward journey.

  • would this be the most cost-effective route to go to South america?

    • Yes, I'm doing exactly that right now. Melbourne to NYC, $1271 return then NYC to SP $784 return, a total of $2055
The only bit I don't like is going via the USA.

      • +1

Look on the bright side. You might get yourself an additional all expenses paid sightseeing trip to another exotic South American destination..

    • Sadly you must go through Melbourne, Sydney or Auckland and connect onwards with LATAM or Qantas - all other alternatives are through the US or back the other way through Europe.

There are some dates on LATAM from MEL-SCL direct for $1598 return. https://www.google.com/travel/flights?tfs=CBsQAho1EgoyMDI1LT…

Just play around on Google Flights.

  • Yea…Nah

  • I'd have to fly United and go to the USA. No thanks

  • +7

The fact some of these prices include peak school holiday and Christmas periods should tell you how 'popular' flights to the US are currently.

    • Yeah and with such short dates, they have all these empty seats that they clearly didn't plan to have by now. So last minute fire sale.

Fly to USA and then get rejected by immigration. No thanks. Free Palestine.

Are you a 12 year old girl?

        • -1

So it’s only 12 year old girls that care about mass killing…. Riiiiiiiiight

          • +4

@Stuj: Generally it's 12 year old girls who say eww, and the word you were after is genocide.

            • @FlyerOne: My bad, I didn’t see the eww it was hidden. Yes thats the word but I wouldn’t say it here because I might need to enter the states in the next 3 years

      • +3

Oh wow, i think you should do some research. There are quite a few examples. Border force have seized incoming passengers phones and checked their posts… then refused entry…

Stay out of the sanctuary cities and you’ll have a great time.

  • Who wants to go to Trumphole?

  • United is a garbage airline.

    • Yep, they break guitars.

    • Flew them recently and they were surprisingly decent this time around. Not out of this world, but a lot better than some previous experiences.

    Couple of important notes:

    1) Those fares are for BASIC economy. I capitalised basic on purpose because it truly truly is, basic. Your dates and fare are fixed. No changes, no credits, no refunds. You cannot choose your seat either (unless you pay extra, and it's not $10 or $20 either). So you and your family or fellow travellers may be stuck in a middle seat and not seated together. Happens all the time with United BASIC fares. Of course, you can always upgrade a basic fare to a regular economy fare, and that's currently $300 more on these cheap tickets. Still, a great deal.

    2) If you have an AMEX, there is a $400 off offer for some people/cards. There's another OzB thread on this here

    3) Air Canada also has some cheap flights to the US right now as well. Likely cheap to Canada too, but didn't check those destinations.

Thanks OP perfect, more seats left for me; booked and can’t wait for NYC!

    Destination: New York

Well not entirely true, the flights from Brisbane via SFO land at Newark, New Jersey which is a complete shit hole.
