  • Great deal

  • good price, normally in the $78-$80 range, even on dx/ebay

    • Well that sucks for us.

Bought a fluke 17b before from DX and they shipped it to WA (~2 years ago), what happened DX!?.

On the 17B I had, while the meter itself rated CAT III the leads supplied were CAT I.
So be careful if you are planning to use it on higher voltage stuff, check the rating first.

      • -1

normal DX will still deliver using Australia Post, but DX AU uses tnt international which is restricted in its delivery, or so ive been told.

      • This deal is for DealExtreme's Australian warehouse which didn't exist two years ago. Their Hong Kong warehouse ships to WA, but the Australian one doesn't.

        • DX do not have an Australian warehouse, they are using Toll Global, which is international only, if it was domestic they would be using express, ground or priority.

Is it a real Fluke or a knock-off? Has anybody opened one of these up and checked the soldering quality, or compared it to a real Fluke?

It's a bargain for a real one, but a rip-off for copy that might cost ~$20.

yomama's comment about incorrectly supplied leads on the 17B (CAT I leads for a CAT III meter) makes me doubly suspicious.

EDIT: Fluke's website suggest the 15B and 17B are both supplied with the same type of leads, so maybe that's OK, but I'm still suspicious of the build quality. I've had problems with DX before. I was also sick of waiting 2-3 months for each order to arrive (it started out with 2-3 week delivery, then went to 3-4, then 6-8, then 8-16, and one order arrived five months after ordering!) so started using Meritline.com and EachBuyer.com instead.

    • +1

They've been around for a couple of years now, and have a good reputation. Lots of talk about the 15B/17B on eevblog.com. The build quality is top notch and the internals are well-made.

This AU Direct thing addresses the delivery times by using Toll instead of normal post.

I just wish they had the 17B in this deal as well!

    • yes, same question here. I had a Fluke 75 some time a ago and costed me more than $200.

    • +1

afaik, the fluke 15b/17b were designed for the china market. not sold elsewhere

    • Is it a real Fluke or a knock-off?

Some of the Chinese fakes are so good now, you cannot tell by looking inside.
They must be working off the original plans, including circuit board. Maybe the only visible hint is a missing serial number. Is this a midnight run, or did they clone the assembly line?
You might then ask does it matter if they are fake? Maybe they use some sub-standard parts? Less quality control?

  • How do you tell if they have it in stock? I have ordered twice and both time they send an email after 10 days stating they are waiting for stock and if I have to cancel follow the link. So both times I have cancelled as I didn't want to wait not knowing when they will have it on stock.

  • I have bought the 17b from america for much more. Are these genuine?

  • Great deal but doesn't do Central Coast NSW :(
Otherwise I would have ordered one!
    The full list is below
    http://e.dx.com/albums/201210/shipping_destinations/index.ht…

  • Like others, I'm wondering whether this product is genuine. Maybe it's a Third Shift product, therefore the same quality but without warranty backing?

    http://www.christopher-chan.com/blog/index.php?/archives/456…

I am frequently amazed by what counterfeiters will produce. Recently I bought a Logitech mouse from a Taiwanese seller. It was a bit cheaper than local, but not dramatically. The product arrived and while it worked, it clearly wasn't genuine. Mold marks on the plastics underneath, no serial number, and the plastic itself had a funny smell to it. Yet someone went to all the trouble to produce a mold of the genuine original, source electronics for it, to maybe knock a few dollars off the price.

    • "without warranty backing" implying that it would somehow be cost-effective to send it back to China in case something stuffs up on a $56 meter.

In Australia, you'd likely pay half the cost or more just to send it back to China. Someone here said it still comes from China using Toll Global and they don't have an actual warehouse here.

This almost certainly is a genuine Fluke, built to a lower quality standard.

Fluke have done "low cost" multimeters before. A different model, the "Fluke 19", was available in the Australian market many years ago. A company I work for bought some, and they worked for a few years, and then they all failed. They then bought the full-cost Fluke 73 series III (sadly no longer available), and every one of those is still working. My own Fluke 75, purchased much earlier (in 1986), is still going strong.

For this multimeter, the Fluke 15B, note the warnings on the box: "Warranty void if sold outside of China" and "Not for sale outside of China". I think Fluke is trying to break into the Chinese market with a multimeter that is competitive with other Chinese multimeters - but without the standard Fluke quality or lifetime warranty.

    • +1

Yeap, Fluke has China only product lines to compete with brands like Uni-T etc. Quality is still very good, except features are typically cut down vs the higher end models.

For 60 bux, this is a fantastic buy for enthusiasts.

I bought one of those Fluke 19s in uni. Dick SMith used to sell them. Mine did develop a fault years ago, but it was simply the contacts on the selector knob which was quite easily fixed. It has been running well since then. They're supposed to use the same chipset as the Fluke 87, but I guess they had to sacrifice something somewhere.

It's fantastic for hobbyists or lighter users, but if one will be earning a living with it, they might be better off with a "full Fluke", unless they're careful about how they treat it.

  • damm, delivery is only to the top end of the gold coast, not the middle, oh well, will keep an eye out for another deal….

  • Question?

How is this better then say (for example) http://www.uni-trend.com/UT50E.html# at ~$44AUD

I mean, is this Fluke just badged a Fluke under contract by some OEM. In other word's what are you really paying $54 for, a Fluke, built and/or designed by Fluke, or a Acme Multimeter built by Acme for Fluke for the Chinese Market?

Or could be this be a knock off, Midnight shift, copy….

I'm looking at the Uni-T DMM, and price/spec ratio seems really impressive!

    • Do you prefer an audi or VW? :)

  • Note: this fluke is only a cat II @ 600v and cat I @ 1000v so it has limited use.

  • Take the UT61B http://www.uni-trend.com/UT61B.html very similar yet better then the Fluke 15B available here.

    Again, about ~45AUD and is:

    CAT III @ 1000V
    CAT IV @ 600V

I know which one I would buy!

    • I would buy the fluke. Even though its a bottom of the line model, fluke's build quality if far superior to uni-t. Uni-t are cheap Chinese meters, you get what you pay for.

As far as the CAT rating goes, never use a cheap meter on a high fault level supply, neither of these meters are suitable.

      • Uni-T are quite good build for the price. Worst are the Jaycar no-name brands.

At the end of the day, these are hobbyist DMMs and should be only used for Cat I.

        • Um, in regards to the Fluke 15B for sale here, it is a cheap meter, that's why it's ~$50, made for a Chinese market….hmmmm…Fluke 19…take two! ;-)

I don't think Fluke's build quality is a reason that makes this superior. The quality of the design/components can only be expressed in its manufacturing cost. Anyone can build a quality meter, Fluke, Uni-T, Voltcraft, etc

My next DMM must be true RMS. I'm getting sick of the average rectified measurement in my current DMM. Lucky I don't spend much time around AC! :-)

What's the point of all this, well it's a bit like buying a car, the requirements determines the model.

As a side note: I have seen tear-down pic's of the 17B (next model up) and the safety/design is very good. I wouldn't have an issue using it on mains, but lack or true RMS might be a turn off. But the 17B is nearly twice the price on DX. So I hold reservations on how this DMM achieves the safety levels/accuracy in such a cut price model!

For anyone that does buy one (Fluke 15B), can you post some teardown pic's!

        • The 17B and 15B only differ in price by about $20 - you have to look at the standard prices.

The $20 buys you temperature, freq/duty cycle, relative mode, and a thermocouple. The meters are otherwise the same.

I wish the 17B was available on this deal though.

  • I would taoe fluke any day regardless of model as long as it does cat IV i have a fluke 87 series dmm and i have had it for 8 years with no regrets and dramas.
Btw i am a sparky by trade so i relie on it every time to give me an accurate reading.
I did and still have a kyritsu set but that rarely gets used and i did have a risk which i gave away.

no thanks. Never buying from DX again.
    bunch of liars
    http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1261177

    • Please explain? The link is a post from DX explaining how they're managing an issue relating to a dodgy manufacturer. What's the lie?

    • +1

How is that their fault? If anything, DealExtreme are the good guys there. Their supplier/manufacturer messed up, and so they offered a full refund (if it had already shipped) or a cancellation and $5 credit (if it hadn't shipped yet). They're being open about it so I really don't see the problem.

  • Price gone up to $66.09 just now. :-(

  • Use the provided coupon will reduce price to US$56.18

    • "$56.18 USD after using coupon equates to about $54 AUD" (from OP)

  • -6

No deal - won't ship to half of Australia (by land mass). Change the title and I'll change my vote.

    • +2

Should I neg every deal I see for MLN, Costco, pickup-only deals, and other regional stores next time?

It's a good deal for half the country. You could have just ignored it like everyone ignores the MLN/Costco/pickup deals if it it's not available to them.

      • -1

But if I see the Costco etc deals then I know not to look into them because they won't be available to me.

For this deal I click on the link (excitement building) start reading the posts (excitement building more) and then eventually realise its not AU shipping as the title suggests but some of AU shipping (excitement wanes).

        Time waste.

        • I do agree that the poster should clarify a bit. It probably won't fit in the title, so it should be in the post itself.

However, is that a reason to neg a deal? It's not all about what only you can get. :)

        • -1

I agree with your point. Its a great deal.

Its annoying its a deal I can't get, happy to remove the neg if the title or body indicates to fellow bargain'ers who it is and isn't available too. In the meantime hopefully the neg serves as a warning to the 12.3% of the population that can't get it.

    • +1

it is by population more than half of australia :P

      • +1

You must work for Telstra mobile :)

  • The 17B from DX (and 409shop.com) are the real deal. So this should be good too.

Price gave me an excuse to pick the 'little brother' up. It's also tempting to avoid the far slower DX.COM shipping times by going Toll (I have 2 packages still waiting to be delivered from the 26th of November; my guess is Toll can't be worse than this, or can it?).

Even though I hesitate to give DX.com more of my money, I pulled the trigger on one unit.

    Thanks EVIL.GENIUS.

  • When I first read this post I noted that it expired on 5 Feb, so I made myself a reminder to check on the 3rd or 4th, as I wanted to read up some more on this brand, model, etc. Today I find that the deal expires today (so it should still work, right?) but when I click on it, the price is now $77 US :-( The discount still works (brings it down to $66.09) but disappointing it is now $10 more…

  • Just got mine. That took about 3.5 weeks … the fake voltalert I bought arrived first, and that wasn't "AU Direct". Heh heh.

  • Just arrived. Interesting that DX still managed to take a month using priority shipping :P
