    Professionally refurbished

    What’s that?

    • +73

Windows reset and laptop wiped over with a cloth

      • +11

Dont forget the windows 11 and Intel shiny stickers

      • +4

Having worked at one of these companies, you probably can't even take the cloth treatment for granted.

        • +2

My professionally refurbed HP product (from the HP store) came complete with bits of dried saffron rice and discarded immigration application papers.

      • Ain't this the truth!

    • +19

They professionally wipe it with a damp rag and put it in a professional plain box.

      • +10

        Professionally.

        • +2

          Perfect for Ozbarginers….-Gerry Harvey

      • +2

I guess rag is better than old sock.

        • +5

          It's a pair of JV's old undies.

      • +5

Don't forget the professional palm tap on the box

        • One or two slaps?

    • +2

professionally included on each and every listing to raise questions and confusions from potential buyers

    • @AlexF Gave you an upvote for the assist – the resulting replies gave me a good chuckle.

    • Hopefully:
      - Physically inspect chassis, keyboard, touchpad,
      - Clean everything with blower, compressed air, (microfiber) cloth and moistened but not dripping with mild solvent such as [windex, tap water, distilled water, 70% isopropanol solution, etc.], plastic scraper to remove asset tags and other stickers and whatnot, generally make the machine look and feel like it's clean.
      - Battery test - charge, discharge, (there's a util that comes with windows to do this and make a report file)
      - Test all ports work
      - test wifi and bluetooth work
      - test keyboard works
      - test pointing devices like touchpad and trackpoint clitmouse work
      - Check screen for artefacts, faults, and damage
      - stress test CPU and GPU
      - wipe SSD and put new OS on it with generic local user account so customer doesn't have to deal with microsoft account creation BS
      - test wwan cellular modem works if present
      - test smartcard reader works if one is present

If they're smart (maximizing sellable units):
      - If parts are bad, swap with a good one from a machine with a different fault. i.e. using faulty machines for parts to fix other machines to get as many good machines to sell as possible

If they're dilligent (maximizing product quality):
A lot of this could be done with a script and a testing jig that's comprised of:
      - SSD(s) preloaded with test scripts set to run on boot.
      - USB3 drive with os set to run test scripts on boot.
      - a cheapo PC to record serial nums with a barcode reader and for test script to talk to in order to dump gathered results
      - smartcard to test reader with
      - SIM card to test WWAN cell modem with
      - wifi access point to test WLAN with
      - octopus of cables that worker just plugs into every port, each cable having some cheap device to verify function [monitor, thunderbolt dock, usb3 ssd, ethernet to test LAN, microphone and speakers].
      - CD, DVD, and bluray disc to test such drives on machines where a drive is present.

Of course this is assuming a dilligent operation and may not be realistic for real life refurb sellers. This is not just them being cheap, it takes skill, effort, time, and money to put together a basic test jig like I described, as well as extra manhours per device to put the machine through it.
It would have the advantage of giving the reseller a way to dump and collect the serialnums and proof of function of as many parts of the machine as possible for potential returns or disputes though, but it's very possibly cheaper to just refund 100% of the customer's money and let them keep the machine for the more troublesome disputes that can't be solved by sending them a prepaid return mailer to send the machine back to swap for another or something.

GRAIN OF SALT - (I'm not an expert on the business side of things, I just have a bunch of knowledge about some tech stuff that sorta applicable)

  • +16

Need it at 299 for tax purposes

  • +4

if only this is 12th gen….

    • -6

That would be wild, seeing as the T14s current model is Gen 6.

      • +3

sorry i meant the intel gen processor, 12th not 10th

        • +6

That's what I thought you were talking about, naturally.

  • +2

What's the market value of a second hand 10th gen Intel laptop with 256GB SSD and worn battery to make this price a bargain?

    • +6

choose 11th gen for thunderbolt 4

      • +7

Here is the link for the 11th gen : https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/306445116701

        • +21

$413 for anyone not wanting to click the link

          • @Jackson: Any thoughts on price for anyone not wanting to think too much about it?

            • +1

@1tightwad: It's a decent price for either unit, depends what you need it for. One thing I thought I noticed was the newer one sounded like it wasn't on quite as good condition, so that might matter to you

      • Also Iris GPU is better i think than the 10th gen intel UHD?

      • 12th gen for taller 16:10 screen

  • +4

I only buy refurb laptops because new is such a rip off imo. I've gone from think pads to surfacebook now though. Nice and sleek. Does the same shit.

    • +5

Aren't surface books impossible to repair?

I like having a laptop I can replace the battery and drive in.

      • +2

Probably. Not something I've run into for this one yet. Agree it's got to be able to modify and fix stuff but I guess another benefit of the dirt cheap pricing is that I don't have to care much haha.

  • +5

Wonder if the battery is cooked

  • "All items are tested and refurbished by the eBay seller or a third party"

Hi OP, could you please specify the third party in this case?

    Cheers!

    • +7

      Probably John from next door.

    • OP can you please clarify?

    • +4

      Hi,

All laptops are tested and refurbished by our technicians, not by a third-party company.

      Thank you.

  • How does this compare to this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/917583

    • of course that that one cheaper better proc

    • +1

Feeling like ACT is better and also more customer service, at least they took time to answer ozbargainers, while Max Direct just chucked a "deals" on here and pretty that's it

  • Would this Dell latitude be better value. $381 before 22% discount.

    Dell Latitude 7420 Intel i5 1145G7 2.60GHz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD

  • Nice

  • +1

Just be aware that Windows if often locked to the original workplace/school with these units, so if you do a clean reinstall it will ask for a sign in tied to that organisation to continue the Windows setup. The laptop will arrive with a clean user profile setup so this is only an issue if you want to start fresh.
There are a couple of work arounds in this reddit thread if you run into the issue.

    • +3

There's also a trick to extract the active key from registry. At least I used to do that a few years back now. Then use it for reinstall, being careful about windows version.

  • -2

How much without an ssd ? Who needs Windows nowadays …

  • these have poor battery life with the intels

  • +2

Can you do a deal on the Surface pros or surface laptops? Thats too expensive for refurbished imo.

    https://ebay.us/m/2BnORD

  • +1

How old are these units? And where were they used if known?

  • +1

Can you claim tax refund if flying out of the country on the refurbished ebay stuff?

    • +1

I have had tax refund on used products previously.
My understanding is they based it on tax invoice. TRS is for tax refund, so as long as you have Tax invoice, you'll be able to refund.

      I welcome others experience

  • Not touch screen?

  • Got mine today and pretty impressed by the condition.
Neat looking with no scratch and battery life is around 88%.
