Coles and Woolworths Extra Memberships

Are there any other tips or tweaks to be aware of?
I spend $500+ per month on groceries, have Woolies extra or whatever it is called for the 10% month discount.
Took the recent 3 months free to get the same from Coles but cancelled after switching half my trips to them, hoping for a retention offer (yet to come).

Any smarts I should be thinking about? I group my shopping to hit about $250 for use of the Woolies 10%. But also try to hit the $50 a week for 4 weeks or similar offers when Coles gives them.
I am organised enough to shift shopping a bit, but can't do something like $500 once a month at Coles followed by $500 once a month at woolies, I need some smaller shops too.

Tell me about your clever approaches.

use a giftcard as well to save an extra 5%. check the app before going, my last shop had 10 x points on entire shop and also 800 points for $10 freezer shop plus 1000 points to use the scan and go trolley

    • That is only useful if you have time.

I have had lots of bad luck with the gift cards and splitting the order with my credit card, as the terminal usually freezes or times out and the transaction doesn't go through but the gift card balance has already been deducted from the first leg of the EFT transaction.

In the past year I have had this happen during 3 monthly shops. I just stopped using these gift cards as a result.

To actually be ahead without having to call the gift card support time and waste hours, you need to do 20 successful shops of the same value. That for me is going to be around 2 years worth of shops, and thus it doesn't make sense to do it.

I believe the issue is also related to the machines not being able to connect to the backend and the loyalty cards coming up as unregistered at Woolworths even though the card is registered. I don't know if it is deliberate and malicious, but it in my opinion it is highly suspicious, because if it goes down, then it should automatically be coded to refresh itself. It doesn't do that or even tell the terminal operator it is down.

The unregistered card bug can also prevent shoppers from using their 10% off.

I still print mine out and just scan them. On OPs shop of $250 thats an extra $12.50 off, not to be sneezed at.

Not sure if this works - coles can be paid monthly but the discount is every calendar month. So pay $7 on 15th Sep and you can use it once in Sep and once in Oct. Cancel on 14th Oct. Join again on 15th Nov. Basically half price. I may try it out later.

If it works at coles, it probably works at WW too - but I am already on a $35/year with WW incl referral bonus (via ozb)

If you don't have any other way to get discounted WW GC - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/913633

I've just found out that if you're using a Coles Pay account that you can now pay with GCs for Coles. So there's that

    • how do you do that?
