Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones 80ohm $198 shipped

80

First time posting, been buying from here for a while. Apologies for any missing details or improper posting etiquette…

These were listed on here for $188 in Nov last year, still, very good price (was cross checking before spending $250 delivered).

Basic Spec's of interest:
Velour pads (some don't like plether)
One sided cable (some don't like 2 sided)
Non-detachable cable (some like to be able to detatch)
Closed (as opposed to open design)

Please be aware there are a number of versions of this headphone, this version is NOT the LE (limited eddition, 32ohm) or 250ohm. There is also a M version (with mobile controls or microphone in-line or something) which again this is not.

I don't want to sway potential buyers as to why these are better or worse than any other audio device, I've spent many hours deciding on these and wanted to share a good price.

Cant see when this deal will end.

    Will buy if DT880

    • +1

Yeah, the DT770 is the DT880, so off you go.

      • No, that one has a impedance of 250 ohms.

        • not exactly. the 770/880/990 all come in various different ohms (32/250/600).

but yes, only 770 comes in 80 ohm version (as far as i know).

        • 770 closed, 880 open or semi, 990 open

  • I got 880s (250ohm) for like $250ish delivered a month ago, i'd save up a little more scratch for those or the 990s at this range imho.

depends entirely on what you're looking for…880/990 are open cans ("semi-open"), while 770 are closed.

the DT-770 pro 80 ohms is more of a basshead headphone. not for audiophiles.

i would suggest someone looking at DT-770 80's is more likely to save up for Denon D2000 than DT-880/990.

      • Spot on good sir.

D2000 would be the next step up so I believe… May move up and on, see how I go with these un-natural cans over my current accurate monitors.

There is a lot to be said for a fun sound signature over accuracy.

I have these exact headphones and they are really uncomfortable to wear. Much preferred my previous Beyerdynamic DT531. I also got them for a lower price from this ebay store http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Beyerdynamic-DT-770-Pro-80-Closed…

    • The Beyerdynaic are another open can… Interesting you found them uncomfortable, its one of the frequent pro's when reviewed. Thanks for finding a better price, I've come to terms with paying upto 15% more to buy locally for warranty. I guess with the paypal exchange those would come in about $4 cheaper.

      • It's approx. $187 on eBay as opposed to $198 on flingshot (i.e. $11 savings). BTW, they have the 250ohms version for $208 on flingshot

I have both the DT-770 and the DT-990, I run both on dedicated headphones amps (the 770's on a valve amp, the 990's on a FIIO headphone amp and DAC combo). The 770's are closed but not like others; they have velour covering their sealed pads so they don't get as hot and uncomfortable as other closed cans. The 990's are actually rather similar but are open-back design and their pads have no sealing so they're very soft and comfortable (in truth I find both pairs are very comfortable but the sealed 770's get a bit hotter).

I absolutely love these things, I'd thoroughly recommend them; I've not heard the 880's but I'm told they're more anaemic in their bass reproduction. Yes, the 770's are a "bass-head" can but they are rather neutral in their reproduction unless you wind the bass up (if you do so they can deliver, more than you'd actually want in practice). As for being 'audiophile' grade; I think if you're going for audiophile gear you'd be looking at the Beyerdynamic T1's or perhps Grado PS1000's, for the price the 770's do a wonderful job and punch well above their weight.

I paid $330 with the valve amp when I picked up my 770's (I wasn't aware of them shipping in Oz at the time) so these prices are pretty good.

    • Hey Davo,

Can you shed some light on your AMP and DAC set up? Especially make and model. I'm considering purchasing a Maverick Audio D1 for use with my HD600 and am looking at other options as well so you input would be highly appreciated.

      Regards,
      rusty

      • Rustynail - I don't know the Maverick Audio unit myself, I don't have any exposure to most of these amps (most vendors here don't even know what a heaphone amp is!) so I had to buy online.

I drive the 770's with a Bravo Audi Ocean - a rather odd little valve amp which seems to do quite a nice job, has a rich warm sound that you would expect from a valve. It's rather small, about 1.5x the size of the average PC mouse. It' s a simple analogue amplifier, no DAC with this. The 770's I use are the 80ohm versions, this combination would do well with the 250ohm version (and I suspect the 600ohm version too).

Tonight I broke out a Fiio E3 (little tiny portable amp that runs on 1xAAA) I bought years ago but never used; used inline between an Ipod Nano 4g and the Beyers the sound was particularly good, it makes up for the slight shortfall in the Ipod's output level and drives the 770's very very nicely.

I drive the 990's with a combination of the Fiio E9k and the Fiio E17. This is desktop headphone amp which 'docks' the E17 - a portable digital headphone amp which has its own DAC internally. USB passes through the back of the E9K into the docked E17 which acts as a DAC with some audio control, primary volume control is form the E17. Sound is, as you'd expect (doing the DAC work in the device itself), very clean - I can source audio with a little netbook as it does none of the decoding.

The biggest problem I've had has been both of these sets showing up just how terrible some of my source material was in quality - I've had to re-encode some of my CDs to a newer standard, I never picked up some of these imperfections even with my previous 'primary cans', the massive and insane looking Jeklin JJ Float Model 2 series headphones (they're poor for bass but unsurpassed for open soundstage from what I've heard).

  • Here is a quick comparison of beyer headphones of similar price.

I personally have dt770 600ohm version. They sound really good if you have it properly amped. One of the best close headphones in it's range. I don't find it as a bass heavy phone. Especially compared to creative aurvana live. Creative has more bass (actually much more) but also has more mids. Mids is more recessed in dt770 but the soundstage and treble is wonderful for a closed can headphones. For office use I really recommend this. Dt880 especially the 600 ohm is probably one of the best headphones under $500 but it's semi open so someone next to you will hear everything you hear.

IMO beyer is really amazing for the price in their 600 ohm range. If you can get a decent amp to run them. I recommend people to have a read regarding the ohm versions link above before pulling the trigger on any of these headphones

  • My new 770's arrived today. Great service by Flingshot, quick reply to email on Monday morning, received quickly through TNT.

Great cans out of the box, due for a burn-in cycle, but definitely a good match for my bass tastes.
