A must have for any serious watch collection..

    • +30

They are nice little time pieces. You can't wear these in your bedroom by yourself. These are moments watches. For those 2 am drives. Those beach days. Those summer nights in the city. Those vacation nights. That is what these beaters are meant for. Little bit of tequila and a bad chick with you and I promise you will be vibing like crazy with these.

      • +1

        Are you a writer ?

      • +2

You can't wear these in your bedroom by yourself

        You certainly can.

You'll be mid stroke and "damn.. That's a sexy watch!"

        • Just be aware the backlight is very poor on these :)

    • +1

Paired with a black nato 18mm strap it looks very elegant.

      • They’re fun watches to mod - change out the strap, install a nice colourway, put in a defuser to fix the backlight and you have a pretty nice watch. I love how light it is.

        • +1

Can you post up your modded one please?

        • +1

Yep! The only $17 watch you can spend $100 on to make it look like a…$100 watch.

Honestly, just enjoy it for what it is - a cool retro look that’s timeless.

          • @Chazzozz: $17 is the best price in a while, but all they are worth (used to be US$5 -10).

I agree I'd enjoy it for what it is and not spend a cent more on it.

The AE1200-1300 are great to mod, big scene as you know from aliX to skxmod (still hard to pull the trigger to over capitalise).

            • @G-rig: I think their worth is higher than $17, I'd say it's the most watch per dollar in the world of watches.

While brands like Seiko have been creeping their price points upward without offering better products, Casio has stayed admirably staunch with the F91-W. An icon.

              • +1

@pork: Yeah up to $25 is ok I think, can't get anything better for that price (although I got an A158 for $27 which may be worth the extra for some people, they are still good for $35 too).

They are certainly affordable enough, I just don't think I'd ever wear it personally whilst I've got other better Casios and G-Shocks sitting around. The DW-9052 was great for $66 - feels and looks like a way better watch. No doubt the F91w is a good beater as well just not as tough.

                • @G-rig: There are plenty of YouTube vids about people taking the F91-W scuba diving, or throwing them off balconies etc. The 30m water resistance rating seems to be well short of what it can actually do.

I've never had a F91-W, but I've had a gold A168 since 2011 (pretty sure I got it on eBay for $32 at the time) and it'll probably outlive me.

                  • @pork: Yeah they are good for the price. Most I could see happening is crack/scratch the screen but cheap enough to get another one.

                    • @G-rig: The gold paint starts wearing off the plastic case after a while, but I've embraced the "dilapidated former ranch of Pablo Escobar" vibe.

                      • +1

@pork: Cheap enough not to care about, yep
Got my G9000 on today (mudman)

                        • @G-rig: The two things I'd buy an F91-W for would be timing the occasional jogs I go on (the steel bracelet on my gold one grabs at the arm hairs a bit when in motion), and travelling in a part of the world with a crime problem. Very useful to be able to check the time without pulling your phone out, and to look non-wealthy while doing so (yet still be wearing a watch you actually are fond of).

                          • @pork: Yeah have got one and a f105w in the past , returned them both (doesn't sit very well on my wrist). Good entry level, first watch or beater for a lot of people though.

Not worried about taking a slightly more expensive watch though.

    • +1

      my first smart watch

  • +2

Kinda wild that they make fakes of these.

    • +6

I know a genuine Panaphonics when I see it. And look, there's Magnetbox and Sorny!

      • +3

"We can't afford to shop at any store that has a philosophy….."

    • To be fair, rrp is 60 AUD.

    • +2

Counterfeiting industry is outta control in China.

  • +4

Lol I still have 1 somewhere from the 90s

    • +2

Wear it in good health brother

    • i do as well! I'm going to keep my eye out for it as i'm curious what exact model it was.

  • +1

i only have a single apple watch ultra. convince me i need this

    • +1

You do. I have a few watches including AW and this watch is what I wear the most

      • +5

        that'll do. ordered

      • -3

What advantages does this one have over Apple watch or Google watch?

        • +3

Don't have to charge it every day?

          $17 can't go wrong for a beater..

    • +3

You aren't comparing apples with Casio

    • The money from your Apple Watch Ultra could buy 70 of these. So instead of buying a new Apple Watch, spend just a bit for money on this.

    • boy vs man, period.

    • These are handy for when your insurgent cell is facing budget cuts and can’t keep losing Apple Watches on improvised device triggers.

  • I have the steel band version, so do I need it?
https://youtu.be/TmjGh6gAf1Q (NSFE) not safe for ears!

  • FYI. The band is TINY - i mean a small child's wrist. Absolutely TINY TINY.

    You've been warned.

    • crap, i have a large wrist. if it doesnt fit, ill give it to my kid

      • get the gift wrapping ready. Filter the reviews by 1 star, majority are related to "kids size watch" I've got an average wrist and still off by about 4 notches. It's a shame because I would have loved to wear it…

        • I think you will find you have a very thick wrist if it doesn’t fit. Not average. Also just get a different strap.

        • ive got a pretty big wrist, apple watch ultra fits pretty comfortably. the casio was just delivered and fits ok on the 3rd last notch

      • +2

Get this and a cheap watch tool. My casio is 4 years old now, my strap barely has a blemish.

Special mention to watchnerd who gave me this advice and saved me from going to the shopping centre watch shop, because I hate rubber straps.

        • but thats more expensive than the watch!

          • +1

@jztilly: You can buy a basket full of NATO-style straps on AliExpress for the same price, and they’ll be perfectly serviceable.

Pro Tip: most of the eBay sellers who flog stuff like this buy in bulk off AliBaba (the AliExpress parent company) anyway. So what you pay on AE is not far off what the eBay sellers are paying.

    • Must be a Casio thing - I bought a "Casioak" on a whim and didn't realise how small (and light) it is.
The included band only just fits on my small wrist.

  • +1

The battery last forever in these watches. I have one with a broken strap blu tacked to my sim racing rig, and it's almost 20 years old now, and it's still going… :)

    • +2

Just get a $10 NATO strap? Some come with new spring bars you can use to attach to the watch too. Seems they've gone up must be inflafion+cost of living.

      • I think at the time I had bought 2, and used one for a while before the strap broke. Then I attached it to my simrig.

Then I bought a quiksilver velcro watch band, and attached that to the unused one I still had, and used that for several years til the band wore out. Pulled the band off, and put the watchface in my wallet. Does the job when I need it to. :)

      • Ta, I added it to my ebay watch list ;)

      • +1

Just get them from AliExpress, they're probably the exact same quality.

      • Do you know where I could get lugs for my f91w? Mine is broken I and ordered from two different places but they were both too short to hold the band in place

    • +2

reminds me of Schumacher taping it onto his steering wheel https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/67azox/casio_micha…

      • +1

        lol. That's brilliant.

I already have a numberpad attached to the center of my sim racing wheel to action as a button box, but never thought of attaching the watch face. :)

Hmm, there is a bit of room on the bottom wheel spoke… :)

  • this is the deal of deals

  • How "water resistant" are these really? I want to get one for the kids, but will it handle showers/baths?

    • yep, handled swimming with it quite well - that is til i cracked the face by smacking it against something by accident and went for a swim/spa and water filled up the face. still worked (light didn't though).

      • TBF… Light on these watch is merely a suggestion.

    • +1

they have a really good replacement policy - only $16.99 delivered for a new one if it gets water damaged.

    • +3

Thanks everyone, I ordered one for my 9 year old daughter (her first "real" watch!)

    • Showered with my AE-1200 on for 4 years no problem, swim in the ocean with it too.

    • Check out this YouTube video where Jody at JOMW tested one and found it could handle up to 6ATM (equivalent to 60m) quite nicely. Scroll through to about 4:30 if you don’t want to watch the whole video, which would be a shame as it’s quite entertaining.

  • reasonable expectation it is legit stock.

How to tell if it is or not?

    • There's a guide on YouTube, you press a combination of buttons.

      • Not useful any more, most counterfeits include this.

  • What's a recommendation of legit good sized Casio with minimal writing on the dial?

  • +3

Sensor Watch is a board replacement for the classic Casio F‑91W wristwatch. It is powered by a Microchip SAM L22 microcontroller with built-in segment LCD controller. You can write your own programs for the watch using the provided watch library, program the watch over USB using the built-in UF2 bootloader, and then install the board in your existing watch case to run your own software on your wrist.

I’d probably laugh to myself if i saw a coworker wearing this.

    • +2

Bill Gates was famous for wearing a cheap Casio, and nobody laughed at him.

  • +1

    S tier. Better than swiss

  • Howndid I miss it :(

  • Skmei copy seem comparable

    • i have a skmei 1628 too (dw5600 homage) , i think i got it for something outrageous like $3.34 as part of some radnom 3 items for $10 buy aliexpress promo - i can recommend it.

    • There are comparison videos that show skmei has terrible accuracy compared to Casio.
