    390MB?????

    • +10

I thought this was a mistake so clicked through
      Nope, not a mistake. Wtf.

      • +1

Yeah I checked this too. But good to give it to kids to remain in touch via calls, if you don’t want to give them the data.

        • Give kids internet data is like asking predator to snatched them

    • +2

      390MB?????

Cheap option for light users like elderly people

      or scammers too.

edit also an amazing option for travellers/workers overseas who may want to keep their number or for kids

      • +6

amaysim PAYG would be better for parking numbers at $15/yr.

        • +4

          Or Lebara at $10/yr

        • +3

You can also retain Amaysim at $10/year, you just need to use the SMS method to top up, e.g. send "TOP UP 10" and this works to renew for another year with $10 credit

        • Unfortunately AmaySIM doesn't support overseas WiFi calling/SMS. Only Telstra and Telstra MVNOs do

          • @Liger Zero: Are you sure about that? I turned on plane mode to switch off the network while being on WiFi, I was able to receive SMS. So I guess it should work overseas too.

            • @Shahw: Nah they use Optus who specifically block WiFi Calling when it detects you’re abroad. So they support VoWiFi when you’re in Australia but not elsewhere. I think you can still receive text messages for free while overseas, but it won’t be over WiFi. And outgoing texts will presumably be charged at roaming rates.

I researched this throughly recently cause I wanted a provide that would allow me to stay in airplane mode most of the time and still receive calls/messages on my AU number while I was in NZ. I had a lot of issues with AmaySIM e-SIM switching in & out of airplane mode. It would never pickup service and just say “no network”. Had to remove & re-install the e-SIM. Eventually, that stopped fixing it as well.

I’m on Boost Mobile now w/ no issues (Telstra MVNO).

            • @Shahw: Yes, on Telstra wifi calling and SMS work even when we are overseas.

            • @Shahw: Optus wifi calling has only ever worked domestically or on planes (Qantas/Virgin Australia) in my case, never overseas. If you’re domestic (or on one of those planes) and switch cellular off, then wifi calling will work just fine. Connected overseas it won’t.

              • @QFFlyer: Thanks @Liger Zero, @OZBsince2018, @QFFlyer. So it definitely doesn’t work over - that’s what I understood.

Sadly, I tested it in Australia through airplane mode while staying connected to WiFi. As the test was successful, I ported my primary number to Amaysim and signed up 365 days plan. Good thing is, I came to know about this limitation before going overseas and bad thing is, I’ll have to leave my plan unused and port my primary number to some provider which allows wifi calling from overseas…

                • +1

@Shahw: why not buy an international call pack?

                  • +1

@0jay: This can be pretty reasonable depending on plan.

Optus charge $5/day on new plans, I’m on a legacy plan that includes unlimited roaming calls and SMS plus 5GB data each month, pretty sure that’s not available any more but depending on how much time you spend overseas, and where, international call/data add ons can be ok value.

                    • @QFFlyer: Roaming won’t help me as I go for long period and I don’t need data as I’ll have wifi at overseas home. I just need to be able to receive calls from Australia…

                • @Shahw: AmaySIM might credit you a full refund if you explain why, their chat has been somewhat helpful for me

    • this is actually not bad if you just want to keep a number open and forwarded.

    • dunno that this'll interest anyone (and no idea how to access these tier) but there's a couple of 12 month casual plans with 740mb/1.2gb data for $74/$120 as detailed under casual here

not sure i can make 740mb/365 work but will give it a try if it's a recharge option for existing customers

      • Update:

these are renewal options when on a casual plan (not available for outright purchase)

  • +6

What could this be used for ?

    Car gps / tracking

    • +2

might be suitable for "find my" networks also

    • Anyone who uses it for that able to confirm they can manage with so little data?

And what happens when it runs out? No service or extra charges?

      • +3

No data once you used up the allocated data, because it is prepaid. You need to buy extra data pack (or recharge). I use it for overseas guests here for a week or two. If the person needs more data, I will buy a 7 day data pack for him / her. After that, it is a spare number to sign up for services which requires a mobile number.

You still get scam calls and text even without data.

      • +2

if you're on ios you can switch it to restricted data and then also turn off mobile data for things like icloud. you can actually hook in with really granular control and only allow data for essential stuff you need on the go (obviously have to restrict that quite a bit given the allowance) but a lot of stuff (like the commbank app) use next to nothing

    • +1

Watch if it supports standalone sims.

Scratch that, esim. Is not available on the $13 offer

    • +2

Seems very suited to IoT devices, like car GPS, dog collars, etc. Such SIM cards usually retail for ~$30 on AliExpress for similar mb and 365 day expiry.

    • +1

Grabbing one for the elevator. Emergency call if someone is stuck.

  • New activations only. Future recharges will be full price!

Does it mean I can't use my existing number? A trick to lure new customers?

    • +1

New activations means activating the SIM for the first 6 months. Nothing to do with luring people in and new customers.

Yes, you can transfer your existing mobile phone number from another provider to a Telstra service – this is known as ‘porting’.

  • +1

Hopefully can be convertible to qr code esim and use it with Galaxy watch .

    • Yeah, does anyone know if this can be loaded through QR code, and whether it works with Galaxy Watch?

Was looking at $2 Lebara sim and loading $10 PAYG recharge on it. This Telstra plan would be double the price for a year…but also Telstra network.

      • The $13 SIM pack for $1 deal is still on. That one has eSIM option. You can try it out for $1 (7 days expiry) then decide whether it is worthwhile to go for this one (but some people are saying eSIM option not available for this discounted $39 SIM).

Make sure you use the single use QR code right away. It will take some time for My Telstra app to let you get another QR code.

        • Yeah, sounds like esim not available on this deal anyway…so no go!

          I guess Lebara it is!

      • Is $10 the smallest recharge? And what is the expiry?

    • +1

Says esim not available on $13 offer when you go to the next step.

  • i'm only seeing 7 day plan $38 reduced to $13 with 45gb

    • +1

      Select casual plan

      • +1

        ta!

  • eSIM available

Shit, now you got my interest.

Would I be able to buy this for 13 bucks, and then hook it up to the missus' Apple Watch LTE GPS whatever the hell, the one that can make independent calls, and for 6 months it would effectively be a second phone?

    • +4

NVM, when you actually go through and try to pick esim it says

$13 offer not available on eSIM

      • Yes wasted my time. Incorrect description in the post saying esim is available. Realised esim is full price $39

      • You can switch to an eSIM after activation.

        • ooooooh tempting. Might just grab one. Worst case: I've been punk'd by OzB and use a $13 spend to get me $40 from JB, $15 from Menulog, $25 from Sporting Globe, a free Guzman, and a few other things that require phone number verification.

Cheers brother! I think I'll grab one for her!

    • That is exactly what i was thinking. Want to use apple watch alongside android phone

      • Missed you by 7 seconds…it's a no go for esim :'(

        • surely you can convert it after purchase right? that’s usually how these things go

    • Optus network but amaysim PAYG supports esim.

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/sim-plans/28-day-sim-plans/as-you…

  • +2

That's nice. I might move my number to this one.

Having a dual SIM phone I use discount/cashback Boost SIMs for data. Just need a plan that allows me to keep my regular number for incoming calls, and the occasional SMS.

  • When do we need to activate it? I saw offer available until Sep 8, but that seems to be the deadline for buying the sim.

    • +3

Before the expire date, typically around 12 months. The one I got expires 10/26

  • +3

Young children? My kids will blow through that data limit on YouTube and Roblox within about an hour.

    • +4

You let your kids on Roblox? Haven't you seen the latest about who they support?

      • -2

        Do they support bacon heads?

    • +1

I think you mean minutes…and less than 5 at that!

  • but cant put this in an apple watch?

    • Correct, it can't.

  • +6

390mb must be 2011 or something

  • I tried to buy the physical SIM for $13.

After entering all my details and credit card details, a message popped up saying go to your TELSTRA shop!

    • +5

What happened next at the TELSTRA shop?
I'm emotionally invested in this story now.

      • +1

Tel$tra store staff said they are busy with customers, come back in 20 minutes (or make an appointment).

That was what happened when I tried to get this SIM two weeks ago (the deal has been around for weeks). Then, I went to Officeworks, but the staff insisted it is a "prepaid plan" and refused to price match. I just bought it online and waited 3 business days.

        • Officeworks don’t price match Telstra!!

          • +1

@azzaisawesome: My local Officeworks store told me that, but an OZBers did get OW to price match Telstra (not willingly though).

          • -1

@azzaisawesome: Tell them as a Wesfarmers shareholder you are gonna report them to the ACCC.

  • +4

Is this a Bigpond or communic8 mobile offer from 25 years ago?

  • Tried to port my number to esim on the other Telstra prepaid deal , 13 bucks for 1 month 50 gigs or whatever, just kept giving an error and I needed to call them. Googled and seems like it's a common issue with boost / Telstra on esim port. Such a headache. Ended up getting one month with a new number

  • +1

I have previously used this plan while we were traveling in remote areas where the only coverage is telstra. load it up as an e-sim and that way I've got coverage everywhere (that telstra covers)

  • +3

This might be an interesting option for people overseas who need to occasionally send SMS and make calls. Telstra has supported Wifi calling for some time which should allow these inclusions to be used overseas without roaming charges.

The previous challenge has been to find a cost effective Telstra plan with a long expiry and decent inclusions. This might just do the trick.

  • Can you buy data packs for this?

  • Can you use this in a tablet/laptop for mobile data just for emails/light browsing? Also, can you get multiple? Either way, great deal!

    • +2

you can but this amount of data would last you no time unless y have a bit of knowledge about how to lock it all down

even then unless you do the vast bulk of your use on wifi you’d tear through your allowance

both uploads and downloads are counted against your allowance

      • +1

        Thanks. 👍

  • Perfect for the kid casual phone.

  • +1

Perfect for using for VoWIFI overseas.

Cheapest way I have found to have an active Aussie number without needing roaming.

I can make/receive call from my Aussie number or reply to text messages for 6 months using this plan while overseas using VoWIFI or 'backup calling' through a cheap data sim.

    • If you only need to receive texts then you can use Amaysims $10 per year PAYG plan. But you won't be able to make or receive calls.

This Telstra deal does look pretty good for expats that only need a little bit of calls/texts.

Let me know if you're able to convert to eSIM. People above have said it might not be possible (though I doubt this).

      • you can use Amaysims $10 per year PAYG

that $10 pa plan is $15

        • Oh they increased price since I last renewed. :O

    • If you are overseas roaming? Doesn't that costs more?
      What is VoWIFI?

  • +2

Thanks OP, had to enter my apartment manually to get around the error that popped up. (was surprised it worked). Might order a second one next week after I get the first.

    • +1

thanks for the tip! for those who get the same error, perhaps try "can't find my address" and enter it manually

  • Sounds gr8. if the data counts right.
I remember them 3GB plans that used up all data after one speed check!

  • -4

After filling in all my details (name, address, email address and credit card) to get a physical SIM delivered to my address, a message pops up telling me to contact a Telstra shop and a reference will be sent to my email address for my convenience .

The offer clearly states online only and the message never comes.

IF THIS IS A SCAM, THEY GOT ALL MY PERSONAL DETAILS. I have to check my bank account every hour to check for any new transactions. Please be alert !

  • Seems like this is back up to $39 at the Payment screen?!

  • +1

Cheeky buggers charged me $39, clicked via the link showing $13! Already charged me $39 out of my account. Onto Live Support. GG.

    • +2

they are refunding with 48 hours, so just as as FYI watch out if you needed the money!

      https://imgur.com/a/EO366hs

      • lol is live support still onshore or offshore now

        • In the Philippines, lucky no grand final boss needed to process refund. Brought e-sim was up instantly.

  • +1

I ordered mine on Thurs 4/9 and received the SIM today, Monday 8/9. Expiry date is 10/26 FYI. Melb metro.

  • Finally got my refund $26 and 4 chat sessions later. Surprised I am the only one who was charged the full $39?!
