I believe this model will need some mods to add an outlet vent or the moisture has nowhere to go.

I'd go for a Space Pi Plus when it drops again

    • Ooh, thanks! I'll look into that.

    • Just had a squiz and it has a moisture outlet on the top? Does it need anything further?

      • Might have been the older version.

I'd still avoid this model due to the coil whine.

    • Yep - just waiting for the next deal to pull the trigger on the Space Pi Plus

Make sure it's in your ebay viewing history and it should notify on drops, or they send you an offer which can combine with the codes

Have one of these, it's got a vent on the top and you can open the filament guide holes - really I just use the latch to prop the lid open a couple mms when drying. generally quite happy with mine.

maybe they've upgraded, but the space pi's weren't as good when I was looking last year because they don't have a lid seal, meaning you'll need to dry more often if you are like me and leave a roll in there in between prints.

Can anyone recommend a good filament washer?

I expect my Brisbane basement to be quite suitable for this task. /s

  • Question from a clueless past user of 3d printers, is this to stop the nozzle getting clogged? As this has kept me away from 3d printers since.

    • +1

Nozzle clogs are pretty rare these days with a more recent printer tbh.

But no this is to dry filaments before or during printing (especially those that are hygroscopic eg nylon) so they print without any structural or cosmetic issues

      • thank you for letting me know.

        • You can get away without a drier for along time if you mainly print PLA.

Once you venture into PETG you will want to get one as it's prone to moisture and causes stringing & bubbling

    • Answering a clueless current user, I understand this helps with adhesion and stringing issues with some filament types that soaks up moisture. It seems like it would help with clogging too, though I've not yet experienced clogs yet.

Clogging is quite rare with modern direct drive printers.

Older printers used bowden drive which had more tendency for clogging due to the way they work.

If they clog now, it's usually due to incorrect slicer profiles.

  • Sweet. Now to get some filament….and a 3d printer

  • This one has a bad coil whine. Had to return it because the sound was so unbearable. Could hear it running upstairs in the office

I purchased one about a week ago and mine isn’t that bad at all.

My printer (Adventurer 5M with enclosure kit) is much louder and more annoying sounding. I close the door though and in the room next to it and can’t hear either of them though (and this is with stud frame internal walls).

  • It's a bit noisier than I expected, but it does a good job and is very easy to use. The vent hole is at the top, and you can feed filament while printing if you want. The Pi plus was more expensive at the time, and they both seem to do the same job, from what little I read about both. Maybe a Pi owner can tell us if it's better for the extra money.

Just returned Pi plus today, thermal runaway from new. Did not turn off when failed, continued to heat when on at power switch, but off (inactive) at screen (fan off), melted filament, warped reels. Very happy to change vendors. Pi came with 2 PTFE tubes, and 2 silica packets (returned), and I could print out of it nicely. Pi air exhaust holes can't be sealed, and lid seal is plastic on plastic, no lip. So Pi not the best for storing reels.
