Flybuys Account in Debit?

I had a bunch of points and converted 16000 points to $80 flybuys dollars so that I could spend it all at once at Coles (rather than $10 per shop as you can also choose to do these days) leaving about 200 points in my account. Later that morning and to cut a long story short it asked me if I wanted to redeem 2000 points for $10 which I accidentally said yes, even though I now don't have that many points in my account. So now I'm in the unique situation of my flybuys account being in debit about 1700 points. Has this happened to anybody else? Will I still be able to use the $80 flybuys dollars? I know i will eventually earn the points back. Pretty silly that their system lets this happen.

  • I have been in Debit 2 or 3 years ago.

Sorted itself as i shopped and built points back up.

Can't see why you couldn't use the $80 FB dollars.

  • Agree is a little strange you can get into Debit.

    Glitch in Matrix 🤷

    Hasn't happened to me since.

  • Yes, you can still use the Flybuys Dollars. It's just a technical limitation, the $10 off prompt works off your points balance from yesterday, so it can't see your FB$ redemption yet.

      Interesting!

  • You can get into points debt as the points on your account aren't updated immediately when a purchase is made. It looks like Coles chose to do bulk updates, maybe at the end of the day, rather than real time. It does save on network traffic but really these days there's no good reason to implement it this way.

Maybe when Coles integrated Flybuys into its POS system decades ago it made sense, and it's costly to fix a system that just works.

  • "which I accidentally said yes" - pull the other one

    • Believe it or not it was a genuine mistake. Right as I was putting my stuff through the self checkout the emergency evacuation alarms started going off and I just wanted to get the hell out of there, which is why I didn't actually dig the flybuys card out of my wallet and use that to pay, I just paid with my watch and ran.

      • +1

Fair enough - I must confess on numerous occasions I hit the enter button before actually thinking through the situation.

What's the old saying ? - "engage brain before engaging mouth"

        • completely. It seems that Flybuys operates on a bit of a silly yesterdays balance system, whereas Everyday Rewards does seem to update your balance in real time.

Regarding the emergency evacuation can you believe this is the second week in a row at two different shopping centres where I was doing groceries and an evacuation happened while I was putting through the transaction at the self checkouts.

  • lol mspaint will have the answer knows it all.

Get a new flybuys account and abandon that one.

Unless negative flybuys points affects your credit score. Anyone know?

  • I regularly get into debit. It happens when you convert your points into $ on your card, then at checkout it will prompt you to take $10 off. Of course you will earn them back eventually unless you stop shopping at Coles. Nice little cash advance offer ;)
