ACCC Consumer Protection for 6 Year Old LG OLED TV?

Dear OzBargain Community, I bought the LG C9 65" from this deal in Sept 2019.

I've only just noticed dead pixels all around the edges of all four sides of the TV and now that I've been looking for them, been able to find more and more in the image itself.

I don't watch too much TV, it's mostly for the family, which is probably why I've missed it for so long. I rang LG who said that they've considered it and as per ACCC, they feel that the product has lasted for a reasonable amount of time and will not do anything in this regard.

I wanted the community's thoughts on this please.

Model: OLED 65 C9 PTA
Power On Time: 4,700hrs
Purchased: Sept 2019
No gaming on this, just TV from various input sources (Streaming apps). It has a screensaver that turns the screen off after 30 seconds on inactivity to prevent burn in.

Do I push for a review or are they right (and I just let it go)?
If the former, how do I do that?

TIA!

since you're in NSW, Fair Trading complaints form is here

You can fight for your rights but as to whether that is worth your time and energy: only you can answer that

However the reality is that your TV is actually still working. It's not a broken appliance, but it has dead pixels that negatively impact your ability to enjoy using it.
But there is no clear legislation on how many dead pixels is required for a display to be considered unusable.

    • Great points, thanks for the link. 🙂👌

Correct, not a major 'failure' as it still works.

    • ACCC Consumer Protection for 6 Year Old LG OLED TV?

      Is OP serious?

All I can say is LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Can you share a photo of the dead pixels?

      Sure, added to main post.

  • kaputt is kaputt

most of that vintage burn in

Yeah as scrimshaw noted you should contact fair trading. A 'reasonable' time is obviously vague but they would at least be able to find if there is some kind of court precedent to go off. If there is you can rewrite to them either with a fair trading template or the ACCC complaint letter tool

    • Thank you, that tool will save me a lot of thinking!

I'd at least go through the motions, doesn't take much effort. You've discussed with LG, they said no, so just lodge it with fair trading. LG might just decide it's not worth it at that point and replace it, if they don't then you can decide how much you want to fight it.

IMO that level of issue (tonnes of dead pixels) is a manufacturing issue for sure. They should fix it.

    • Thank you, looking at the links Scrimshaw and blldzd provided, it doesn't seem like more than 15 mins to work, so I'll give it a shot!

LG sucks arse , never again 💯

    • I have their monitors and the ui is really good, the pointer is accurate and I haven't had any issues with it, tbh.
I'm not a brand loyalist though.

Who would you go for instead? Sony?

      • I had a bad experience with a smartphone and fridge , my inlaws had a television that went south after six years . Personally I've had an Hisense tele for six years and still going strong.

        • Yea, phones aren't built the way they were back in the days of HTC.
I'm surprised about the fridge though!

The tv sounds like my situation. What did you do?
Did you chase LG for ACL/ACCC?

          • @Lord Ra: No , the in-laws weren't interested and wouldn't let me investigate/inquire on their behalf . A little like their ducted Mitsubishi system packing up after seven years , another case of paying up and letting them (Mitsubishi) off the hook .

    6 years? nah.

  • +12

You've been watching it effectively for 2 hours every day for 6 years. That seems more than fair to have lasted a reasonable amount of time.

I think sometimes we push the protection laws a bit far tbh. Within 2-3 years sure, but at some point you can't expect your TV to last forever, and 6 years for it to still be working but showing some minor flaws seems pretty damn decent.

    • +4

Completely agree. Although not a popular opinion here.

We also complain about higher prices here than other countries, but don’t realise part of it is including a calculated markup for ACL issues.

    • I agree with you. However, given it cost me, at that time, $3,500 and would have cost non-ozbargainers $4,500, that is a cost of a 2nd hand car of even a 5 year old motorcycle!
Of course, it's not the same thing, but it is a sizable chunk of money. I feel it's reasonable too, and it'll give me an excuse to get another one this blackfriday and leave the ACCC claims to others in the 2-3 year bracket instead.
      Hmmm, choices!

      • a sizable chunk of money

Do you think LV handbags should last 100 years compared to 1 year for cheapie bags?

        • That's a great question!

        • Definitely!

Reason is because if I ever spent that much money on a handbag, I'd be too afraid to use it incase I lost it or scratched it.

A handbag within my budget though? Hell yeah, I'd have no qualms in using it as often as I wanted.

I asked LG live chat for you.

TLDR: for the below OLED at least, it should last up to 6 years.

Basically, I asked about the following 55" OLED ~$3300.

    https://www.lg.com/au/tv-soundbars/oled-evo-tv/oled55c5psa/

There was a bit of back and forth before this, but here was my last question:

Thank you. Just to clarify, if I'm using it for a couple hours a day, and it's just in a living room, I should expect it to last without 50+ dead pixels after 6 years?

    And the response:

    Yes correct

Of course, these are two different TVs. But I can't imagine there would be a huge difference in expected lifespan between the two.

    • +1

      Wow, thanks mate!
So chat says YES, they expect to last longer than 6 years. Very kind of you, ta!

I reckon 6 years is a decent run. Keep in mind it's still working… your kids won't mind.

  • I dunno if this helps you but…

Some LG's of around that vintage had a recall.
    https://www.9news.com.au/national/product-recall-australia-m…

I think you needed smoke and or flames to qualify though.

    • 2019: 65W9, 77C9, 77W9
Mine is 65C9, so guess I'm safe!
      Thanks for the link though.

  • I’m just shocked you went for the C9 over the GZ! Why would you do this? You could have been a king amongst men.

As for your battle, for a 6 year old appliance no court will enforce anything, so you need to be as much of a polite pest as possible. Report the issue to every authority possible, find other instances of the same issue and suggest that it’s a design/manufacturing flaw, keep LG updated with all the complains you’re filing, escalate to a manager, and be reasonable with your demands, don’t ask for a new C5, tell them you’ll happily accept a refurbished C3.

Also don’t tell anyone else about the dead pixels, otherwise they’ll start noticing them and looking for them and it’ll effect their viewing experience too.

    • Did you mean the GX? I can't find a GZ. Probably because I knew nothing about TVs and their tech and this was my first ever decent tv as a big boy in the big world!

      a polite pest

That's nice, I will try. Finding other instances of the same telly going to be a bit hard I reckon. Yes, I agree, a refurb C3 is fine. Heck, even if they give me another panel but same TV I don't mind!

I really wonder if other purchasers of that deal have the same issue now.

      • The deal you linked is for an LG (C9) and a Panasonic (GZ) - the latter of which is rather revered.

  • +2

That doesn't look good and I'd be pretty annoyed. None of these companies make anything decent these days. My good old Japanese Panasonic plasma is still going strong, near 15 years old.

  • +1

Im more interested as to how you found the power run time lol
