AmEx Annual Fee Reimbursement

Hello everyone, I'm curious if anyone has ever had any luck with an AMEX Annual Fee Reimbursement, either in full or pro-rata?

What did you try, how many people did you have to speak to, to find someone who could help?

No Luck with the fees, but they did offer to change my card product to the fee free card!!!!

  • They used to be quite flexible when it comes to annual fee waiver especially for high spender but that changed somewhere around covid time … one of the reasons I cancelled the card after almost 20 years with them (and they didn't budge).

It changed when the Gillard government in 2018 capped Merchant fees. AMEX had a different operating model to the big four banks. AMEX charged merchants a much higher fee and promoted themselves to merchants as having a more loyal customer base that spent more. Merchants were happy some begrudgingly to pay the higher fee.

      • Yes I think this is correct. I remember calling up asking for a wavier after those changes and they told me they are no longer under legislation permitted to offer incentives to sign on

      • It's annoying because from a consumer point of view, the best thing that could happen is leaving the card costs uncapped but then forcing businesses to not allow to charge fees on paying with card.

Capping the interchange fees on cards only means that merchants get to keep more of the money - it's not like they lower prices. So when the RBA caps merchant fees, it means consumers are paying the same, but businesses are collecting more money, and the consumer fails to reap the benefits of points from a credit card.

And funny thing is, cash is actually more expensive than debit or credit. (Source: https://media-publications.bcg.com/The-Cost-of-Electronic-Pa…)

What a dumb report. As soon as we go cashless, debit and credit card fees will increase. They won’t stay the same.

I've never paid for an Amex card

  • Why are they reimbursing you?

  • Amex getting poor. That's why devaluing points. It's all downhill from here.

They struggling to get merchants for the high fees they need to pay for the rewards. They had to do a sale on that end. So they can't afford to pay for the other end, but there are more merchants now

    • They are getting so poor…

American Express annual gross profit for 2024 was $65.949B USD, a 8.98% increase.
American Express annual gross profit for 2023 was $60.515B USD, a 14.48% increase from 2022.
American Express annual gross profit for 2022 was $52.862B USD, a 24.73% increase from 2021.

    • Amex getting richer. We are getting poorer/less

That's how all these Businesses roll.

After being a CC chaser for more than a decade, I think the value in CC are just / will continue to get worse.

The annual fee waivers requests are largely been declined across the board for most banks. If RBA pushes through with surcharge ban, it will get worse.

    • Churning cards is already dying a slow death with wait times now up to 2 years for promo points and the amount of points getting lower and points being split over two years

Cant see it getting any better, it will probably cease to exist after the rba changes if they go through.

      • It makes sense though. The churning card was a finite gig that had to end at some point. As with all good things.. as you know!

I used to be with Citi Prestige and that was a great card back in the day. Half annual fee, free hotel nights, PP, hotel status, free airport transfer, airport fast pass. It was serious value for $350 p.a. Then they unravelled it all and got worse when NAB took over. I switched to Amex charge a number of years ago and even thats now getting wobbly… things are just getting devalued, removed, etc.

Will renew for another year and see how we go.

  • What card?
