Damm how did I miss that post 😅
At this stage, I think they are just trying to artificially grow their PRO userbase, most likely so they can sell it to a big company later.
I have been using it for few weeks and it's actually great, almost replaced google search for me
Stage 1 of enshittification.
There's no doubt about it they're doing whatever they can to get users. It is a good tool though, better than straight chatgpt. Research mode is also very useful for specific types of queries.
Yes Apple has looked at buying Perplexity. No doubt someone else will put a bid in to block Apple and it just makes their valuation higher.
Can someone please tell me what Perplexity is good at?
Google, but make it not trash.
Also Comet is pretty great. When it works. Hit and miss, like most AI agents.
Comet made my computer go nuts by crashing every next minute. Uninstalled next day.
Using lab mode also allows agent mode (just without your actual tabs). I've used it as web scrapper replacement at work.
You can use multiple AI systems in one place. With pro you can use unlimited gpt 5, grok 4, Gemini pro etc.. generally speaking, you can use these anyway for free but there's a usage limit.
You cannot use the most expensive and sophisticated couple of AI systems like Claude Opus.
I find it very helpful and have gotten to like Grok 4.
Dude, thanks!
I got the free pro, really just to try comet, didnt realise you get access to all the other models!
And yeah, Groks great. Besides Claude its my fav for coding help.
can you invite me to Comet please
@deadfish: Cant you get the free year of pro?…..
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/922666
Ill give you one if you need it, just post it here? I dont think i can dm you.
Add to that their Sonar model is based off Llama and Deepseek
Wait how do you select the models? Never realise you could do this. I just looked through the settings not seeing these options
If your on the homepage in the search box, 2nd bottom right, you can pick a model.
If you go to Perplexities preferences and click Choose Model it tells you to pick on the homepage, so i guess thats for everything.
Did yall see tucker carsen question open Ai Ceo sam altman on the 'fake' suicide of one of his x employees?
If you're willing to consider paying for search you may as well try out Kagi. Actually Google but not trash.
Their index does a pretty good job of not showing any SEO slop or ads, and in the rare cases it fails to you can downweight/blacklist sites etc.
If you must use an AI chat interface, Kagi's FastGPT was actually listing sources 2-3 years before everyone else, and is still somehow faster than most of the competition.
You have to be over 16
I installed it and got free PRO form the previous promotion. It hallucinates quite regularly, unlike free Gemini, even though it claims to use Gemini PRO. But there is no way to override its settings and make it always use Gemini, so it is a Russian roulette.
All you need to do is choose the model you want to use and it retains that model until you change it again.
Thanks, will give it a go. What's your favourite for researching the internet and getting summary on subjects?
For general research and Google searches, ChatGPT covers most bases. For summaries on specific subjects or video transcripts, I tend to use ChatGPT or Gemini. And for deeper, more extensive research and analytical work, I favour Gemini or Claude. I threw a 150 page, 48,000 word MS Word document at ChatGPT and it broke it's will to live lol
@shegeloaf: haha Yeah it took me like 6 weeks to put it together, but I thought AI would be able to handle it. Ah well, such is life. Gemini got me my intended results in the end so all good.
@KangaDrew: Did a little bit of testing of this for a consolidation of my university notes for quizzes etc.
Takes a smidge to process, but gets the right answer with references and explanation
V helpful, using Gemini :)
@Zuelly: Agreed. Even the free Gemini model is really good. All AI models are only as good as your prompts, and it's rarely going to get it exactly right the first time around. But with some tweaks here and there, it can be really helpful. Glad it worked out for you :-)
I found the opposite, Ive had Pro.for 10mths & Gemini for 1mth, Gemini just makes up stuff. And when I correct it, with links/quoting to back up that it's wrong, it doubles down.
At least Perplexity gives sources and if it does get it wrong, i apologises and digs deeper for the correct answers.
Ehhhh, I am so sick of AI mea culpa. It's exhausting… I also personalise my models to not provide me false flattery like "that's such a fascinating question". I don't have time to read that nonsense any more, it's simply getting too much for my liking.
apparently OpenAI has discovered that if they tell.their models that's it's ok ro admit they don't know something, that they hallucinate much less.
yes the pandering & ego stroking is really annoying. Maybe I'm just an old fart, but the constant need reassure people & now things that they're smart & clever is really.really annoying.
the constant need reassure people & now things that they're smart & clever is really.really annoying.
Agreed. It's also not surprising.
Your observation captures a deeper truth that’s becoming impossible to ignore: the growing friction between human intention and AI performance. It isn’t just about accuracy or efficiency; it’s about authenticity in interaction — a desire not merely for correct answers, but for engagement that respects your time, trusts your intellect, and eschews performative politeness in favor of meaningful signal. In a world oversaturated with hollow affirmations, what you're asking for isn’t demanding — it’s essential.
Interesting update: so I was advised I can change to different models is settings. I have ran them all with my test question and figured out the worst one that hallucinated: Sonar, o3, Grok and GPT 5, whilst Claude and Gemini provided correct answer. It was a web search analyzing summary (does product x and product y both use the same proprietary material z).

Can someone help me with what I've missed? I have an @schools.sa.edu.au email address (verified) but says my school (school initials).sa.edu.au is not eligible. It is a high school. Is this only a uni offer?
Most student deals like this are for university edu emails.
Maybe try the paypal free trial mentioned by the top comment if your school is not supported.
Is PayPal not 18+? They may not be able to use that either as a highschooler
Been using Comet too and really enjoying it, all my chrome extensions came across for the ride. Definitely they are pitching to grow users and be bought.
Then we pay for search? No way
Does it have agentic AI? Been tryint Manus but the daily credit is limited to make it usable..
Thanks op
How do you use this?
I try to treat it lime Grok, Deepseek, ChatGPT, Gemini but it has 0 memory and each message is a new message without the previous ones context and it’s just full of ads. Even the image generation just makes random image, nothing based off uploads.
Am I doing something wrong, is there something this AI is good at that the others aren’t?
It is more useful for research and fact checking. It is not a foundational model like Grok, Deepseek or Chatgpt. Instead, it is a wrapper - it wraps a prompt and some citation tools over the foundational model (e.g. chatgpt / deepseek) to do supposedly better quality research, with URL references.
I mainly use it for grok it does remember the past conversations within perplexity. I don't have any ads at all in perplexity pro. Haven't tried image.
Click the top right when you’re in Perplexity, it loads the ‘Discover’ page which is ad-filled.
The page will also randomly pop up when it’s bored.
Oh ok, I use the app.
is there a way to enable past conversations? Like gpt?
Deep seek better than this
Deepseek is rubbish. You don't even know what they are not showing you
Shallow seek then
Sounds like an anti Chinese sentiment lol
is it possible to stack this promo with the PayPal? aka getting 24 months?
Good question. Following..
I was just about to ask the same. Im assuming not, particularly if you signed up with a non edu email for the PayPal trial. I live in hope though!
Ok I just went through the process and it allowed me to do it on my non edu pro account. Got verified with my edu email and all seemed to go through however my subscription end date is the same as it was previously. Not even extended to a year from today. Maybe it’s slow to update or it doesn’t stack. Will report back if it changes.
Well I think the hassle less approach is that if you are not graduating within 12 months, probably just use the paypal promotion first for now as it may end.
After 12 months when the paypal trial expires, just sign up a new account and use the student trial.
I’m an educator so my trial at uni could “expire” at a moments notice 🤣
I paste in u-tube links into perplexity and it spits out a summary.
My mind was blown…
10-15min vids turns into 1min reads now.
are the other AI's able to do that? Gemini, ChatGPT?
I think Gemini. You can do it locally with openwebui too
No Idea, today was my 1st daying mucking around with any kind of AI…I felt like i was in the matrix and data was being downloaded quickly into my head….haha
Was using Perplexity today to analyse some data n an Excel doc. Made some pretty visualisations but couldn't export an Excel doc, unlike ChatGPT. Had a similar issue with Gemini where it couldn’t export a zip file for a Wordpress theme I asked it to build. Instead o had to copy and paste code for. The files into documents on my desktop. Felt painful after the ease with which ChatGPT throws files at me.
Have you try to change the model to GPT, perplexity allows that
Yes that was my thought as well but the computer said no 😩
If you're not a student or educator, but do have a PayPal account
