  • Looking for a bedside laptop for under $300

11th gen grade A second hand

+1. Picked up a yoga 11th gen i5 for $266 (SMG@ebay). Great for the basics, media and even light gaming.

  • +3

Using this exact laptop to browse ozbargain, I upgraded it to 32GB RAM (8+16)
FYI- There's a 8GB soldered stick on the laptop, and 1 free slot

    • +30

      "I upgraded it to 32GB RAM (8+16)"

      The math is not mathing.

      • +7

Yeah I'm running on 2 brain cells, my apologies
        8 (soldered) + 32GB module I installed = 40GB

        • -6

for DDR performance, you shouldn't mix ram of different capacities

          • +17

@mikejohnson27: The benefits of upgrading from 8GB far, far outweigh any small speed penalty.

            • @bargaino: And don't recent gen CPUs allow the first x GB that is in both slots to act like dual channel anyway?

              • @stumo: And for a desktop, you can get dual channel from 8+8+16.

              • @stumo: Yes, so there's no harm in outsizing the second slot, you'll get DDR from the first 16gb and then single speed from the remainder which is still heaps faster than the swap file so while it's not optimal strictly it's always better than letting it limit the size of the second stick.

            • @bargaino: fair, the first 8GB of each module will still run in dual channel. so it's like 16GB dual channel and 24GB single channel. i just wouldn't bother buying a laptop with 8GB soldered even at this price when there are alternative laptops that lead to 32GB in dual channel. an option to be sure, but its still less performant and people should be aware of that. my comment was not suggesting it's a bad idea if you already have this laptop, I just wouldn't seek this laptop with that goal in mind

    • Cool upgrade. You must get OzBargain deals faster πŸ˜›πŸ˜‚

      • +1

Yeah that was one of the perks of the OzBargain platinum membership- I get notified of deals 1 month in advance
Just kidding, I bought this laptop awhile back during a sale and took advantage of a boosted cashback offer bringing the total to around $900, $1000 including the RAM

        • Seems like a great deal!

    • Could you share any links or similar to what ram you used? Thanks.

  • +2

is this same one available on Lenovo direct? There's a 15% uncapped cashback there today on TCB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/924276

    what's the weight?

    • +2

      1.47kgs

    • mine is 1.52
edit: oh sorry, mine is the Gen 6 with the CU5.

  • +4

Last deal was $50 cheaper with 22% off

  • +2

Heads up - these have some weird issue updating windows. Its okay now but I had to factory reinstall it otherwise I wasn't able to perform windows updates. It seems to be a common problem too. Did my head in for an evening. Good laptop overall though. Solid and feels good quality.

  • +1

    Thanks, mate, good deal.

  • Aww they removed the e16 from their store

  • I think the last deal ($779) had a newer/faster cpu - Core Ultra 5 125U vs Core i5 1335U. This one's CPUMark is about 20% slower - if that matters. I bought one for the wife and it is a nice little laptop for the price.

    • How confusing is it for consumers that a 5 series 12 gen is faster than a 5 series 13 gen.

      • +4

Just to confuse you further Core Ultra 5 125U (Meteor lake) is a member of Intel's 14th gen CPU family.

  • +1

I'm desperately looking for a good 2in1 for work use. I'd want 32gb & 1tb. Any deals around?

    • Me too! Let me know if you find one

  • Whats the 300nit IPS screen like on these things? Sub par or pretty good for the price?

    • Wait for Nit (wit) police to strike first.

      • +1

I have an earlier model and while the screen may have been updated since, my experience with the E14 series is the base screen is fine for indoor office work and rubbish for anyone with finer tastes in the matter. It's literally never bothered me, but I have a low expectation of a portable office work machine so that may not mean much.

  • This would be a reasonable BYOD laptop for a kid going into grade 7 yeah?

    • +1

Yep have had no major issues with the laptop after almost 2 years of daily use- plus the Lenovo technicians do their job really well and will come and repair the laptop on site (at home), my unit had a faulty webcam and they replaced it for free

    • +4

This would be the top line item in the options list. Which is about $1500 bought directly from those guys

    • -1

You might have to still pay for them to install the edu software on it

      • The school organise all that for us they said, we have to pay for the software through some lease type deal though.

  • +2

My one died 2-3 months out of warranty.

Credit to Lenovo tho as they repaired it for free.

  • Dang…I needed this with touch. Nice price.

  • what is everyone's speculation of getting slightly better specs for the same price on black friday / cyber monday, like maybe an i7 instead of an i5 for instance, do you think i should wait?

  • How is the gaming use of these?

I'm talking Roblox, fortnite, micecraft, that level of gaming.

    • You can play Modded Minecraft Java edition (300 mods on Fabric/200+ NeoForge) pretty well at 60fps if you install optimisation mods (turn on vsync/cap frames to 60-70, no point going higher/wasting CPU on extra frames if the screen runs on 60hz)
War thunder low graphics (minimum install) ~40 fps with spikes and dips
Btd6 is smooth but gets laggy in really high levels where there's like millions of bloons (not even the best PC can handle that)
2 point Hospital okay but slows down after you start to build multi-million dollar hospitals

That's about all i can remember off the top of my head

FYI- This is just my experience, I've upgraded to 40GB RAM, and I constantly have like 20-30 windows of chrome tabs idling in the background lol (around 500 tabs)
Oh and I forgot to mention the silicon lottery haha

  • How is the battery life?

Was holding out for a T series, as believe they were a bit more resilient for school backpack treatment, but this does look a pretty good deal.

  • Oos

  • Mine is getting delivered today.

  • +3

I got this laptop yesterday. IT was a little tricky installing windows home without a windows login :), managed to activate office.

Poeple who complain about this screen are dreaming. The screen is just fine for light office type of usage.

There was alot of Lenovo bloatware which took ages to remove including silly Mcafee.

Keyboard is good and the trackpad is ok. It's not as good as a MAcbookair but the price is way lower.

I think the end user will be happy. I will be passing it to a family member soon.
