My son who is 16yo and playing a few years was after a good value set.
If anyone has any experience with a set would love to hear your thoughts.

this - for around $400 you'll find a near new entry level dtx500 set on scumtree/farketplace/cash diverters, and can reselll anytime in future for same value again…so its kind if like a breakeven 0% return on investment really :)
Had an alesis nitro set.
Was great for a bit of fun but was a bit small for an adult so probably a bit small for a 16yo, need to check the size of the frame.
I bought second hand on marketplace and sold for the same price two years later.
Yahama/Roland as recommended above are very good but significantly more expensive so if not using it to perform go alesis. The alesis will sell for closer to its as new price than Yamaha and Roland (unless selling when still the latest model).
Market place you're more likley to get a throne, sticks and amp included, you'll need to buy those if you go new.
Mesh heads are a must if you are anything beyond a beginner or kids just having a bash.
