[Refurb] HP Probook X360 435 G7 13.3" Laptop (Ryzen 5 4500U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $299 + Del ($0 VIC C&C) @ Harris Technology

370

Was looking at laptops for my nephew when he starts high school next year.

I went to around 6 different sites putting product page links into AI (grok) getting it to scrape the specs and then benchmark each processor to get a relative (single and multi core) performance rating and a price per performance rating.

This stood out on both the Geekbench 5 and Cinebench as being particularly good value compared to the other options ($299 plus delivery1 and a $4.25 credit card charge if you choose to use that but I just a EFT)

I've just put through an order myself

it might be a tiny-screen struggle trying to survive high school homework

    • +8

The school's requirements was something between 11.6-14" screen and they warned against getting anything over 14" as it might be heavy and not school backpack friendly.

So that's why i was looking at that size in particular.

      • +1

Okay, perfect! as long as it fits the school’s requirements

      • +3

Main school struggle for the screen is to survive kicks, punches, and drops. And these laptops don't do it well. But from all 360-convertibles they are not the worst.

        • +1

Agreed, our kids have finished school now. At the time started with new lenovo E as that seemed best bang for buck, that didnt go so well for reasons mentioned above. Ended up settling on refurb lenovo T as the T models were advertised as near-indestructable and they lived up to expectations.

        • +1

Oh man I thought you were talking about the child's struggle at school being to survive kicks, punches, and drops.

      • +2

95 per cent of school students will be rocking 13" displays, so you're all good for all the reasons you outlined @qaz182.

      • Hey OP, Anything with bigger screen that you liked.

        • +2

To be honest I only fed listings to the AI with a screen between 11.6 and 14 inches so nothing bigger than that will show up

Reebelo has lots of stuff and it's where i found the Harris Technology listing

  • +3

Pretty old laptop. My main concern would be what's the battery life like.

    • When I asked, they (Harris Technology) said it was grade A and that meant 80% battery or better but I agree, that is my primary concern too (much more than cosmetics as it's a school laptop and won't be plugged in much during the school day)

      • +2

A grade is subjective, and doesn't really mean anything.

Great spec wise if accepted it would be tethered to a charger. Believe these are barrel type too.

I'd try to track down something that charges via usb-c.

You may find a deal for new on Black Friday.

        • Best for school: Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook 8gb 34cm OLED display, 15h batt, OS updates <2031. Only 4gb had great price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/815570 $212. 8gb with USI pen $499 11'23 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/813292
          2 USB-C with charging, 2in1 detachable keyboard/protector…

          • @taki: These IdeaPad Duet 5 models are not great for school, mine got a cracked screen just from popping it in my backpack while I did a bit of walking. Definitely no drops, kicks or bumps. Wasn’t happy at all.

I’ve also got an older Acer Travelmate B series that would definitely take a beating. These are education spec. If you could get a well priced one with a decent CPU, they’d hold up.

        • Supports USB3 power delivery (https://youtu.be/QYlcw7dpSSQ?si=t6fdO10cNRlzMvxc&t=254)

Not that it matters now, it's out of stock

      • +1

Looks like this can be powered via USB PD?

    • +4

yes i bought a refurbished laptop and had to buy a new battery which increased cost by $100

    • I bought one of these a few years ago and only get about 2-3 hours out of the battery. I then replaced the battery with a new generic one from ebay and… get about the same duration.

Still a great laptop. Just expect to bring a charger if you need it for 8 hours of work.

  • +2

Good find OP! Also, from a quick google, higher spec processor but grade B for $255 delivered with code: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/187381188236

    • I don't know what code you are using but good find

I put it into the AI to compare to the ProBook x360 435 G7 and it said yours was a year newer but had less cores (multicore performance is 4,000 vs. 4,400). Your model has a brighter screen but is grade B vs the one i posted which is listed as grade A

This is definitely a strong option particularly if you get it for $255

      • +3

        Code is SPR17 (ebay plus)

        4500U - 2.3ghz 6c / 12t

          5400U

          • +1

@High: funny enough specs are the same for the 5400U

            Ryzen 5 4500U - 2.3ghz 6c / 6t (opps wrote 12 threads, it is not)
            Ryzen 3 5300U - 2.6ghz 4c / 8t
            Ryzen 3 5400U - 2.6ghz 4c / 8t

    • +1

      That's a lower spec CPU ?

  • +1

    That looks good for school.
Do they actually want a 2-in-1 though?

  • +1

Having a laptop for high school is an absolute joke in my opinion, this is what the minimums specs are for my son's high school next year. (High crime area so likely will be stolen at some point)

    following minimum specifications:

Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 (or better)

RAM: 8 GB (16 GB preferred)

Storage: 256 GB SSD (Solid State Drive)

Operating System: Windows 10/11 or macOS 12 Monterey (or newer)

Battery Life: Minimum of 8 hours

Screen Size: 13 inches or larger, with a resolution of at least 1920×1080

Weight: Lightweight and portable for daily carrying

Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or better, Bluetooth 4.0 or better

Ports: At least one USB-A and one USB-C port

    • +4

Yeah I agree, giving preteens expensive laptops seems silly but i'm just following orders 🤣

The requirements at the school my nephew is going is:

      11.6"-14" screen
      4-8gb of RAM
      128gb hard drive (SSD preferred)
Windows 10+ or Chromebook (Windows preferred)
      Minimum 6 hour battery

So I went a little overkill, but new, it was all celerons at this price point. My sister really didn't want to spend over $500 which I understand especially as my nephew has a tendency to lose things (like his school jumper every other week).

If I sound a little evangelical about this deal it's because I put many hours last night into comparing models and ths was the clear best I could find.

      • +2

Much better specs for a kid, oh well I'll be looking for boxing day sales and asking AI it seems! Screw spending $1200+ that most places want.

      • +1

Those specs (ram/storage) were bad 5 years ago… 4gb wouldn't even let you install windows probably and I know from experience that a 128gb drive will be close to full with just windows and office..
You haven't gone overkill at all.

        • While your first statement is correct, the rest is straight up false.

You can install windows 11 with 4gb of ram and windows and office combined are <64gb

It wouldn't be a good experience with 4gb ram & 128gb SSD, but it is doable

  • +3

I’ve had an older version of this as my work laptop for the past few years. The probook business laptops such as this are much better built than the consumer range and can take a beating. Good choice for school and better than anything new in the same price range. Just factor in a new battery every couple of years.

  • -1

You definitely need a touch screen for kids

    • Agree - I have kids at 3 different schools and they all list touch screen as a core requirement.

  • +1

Warranty is everything for a school laptop. I recently had excellent warranty service from HP, but you have to ask: does this one even have a warranty??

  • +1

That looks good OP. I just bought another similar laptop yesterday from Australian Computer Traders for $364.37 with ebay plus code.

    HP EliteBook x360 830 G7 Intel i5 10210U 1.60GHz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD 13.3" Win 11

This has touch screen (2-in-1) which my kids like but yours has a better processor. I didn't know HT did refurb so I'll check them out next time.
I always allow for how much a new battery is and how hard to replace it but so far, I've never needed to replace one and I think I've bought around 8 school laptops for kids and nieces/nephews over the years.

I just buy something like this every couple of years for each kid. They get trashed in school bags so I'm not comfortable spending big money on a new model.

    • +1

Your one is way better as it is 8xx series (better material compare to 4xx and 6xx series). How's the device condition and battery life?

      • +1

        Hasn't been delivered yet.

Always a gamble with refurb but this is the third HP EliteBook X360 I've bought through ACT and the last two were good quality and no complaints from the kids about batteries. It seems to last them a day without issues as they're not allowed to use chargers at school.

I had the first EliteBook fail after maybe 4months, I think it was mainboard. ACT were really good with warranty though (through eBay) and swapped it out within a few days. My daughter has had that one (G2) for maybe 2.5years now so this new one (G7) will be the replacement.

    • Ouch (ah, not a 2-in1 though)

      • haha, yeh just saw that one. Good deal but yeh, no touch screen.

  • +1

wow good find for this Price. Decent CPU and screen is full HD, will be decent as a probook not consumer grade cheapie. I'm still using a old dell laptop with i5-8400u CPU - bit over half performance compared to 4500u but mine has a touch screen which i like from time to time

  • these days you should be able to pickup a dell latitude 7400 or 5400 i5 with touchscreen for that money, good solid build quality & easily upgradable. Stat away from the retail end of lenovo prone to break

  • +1

Sold out i guess.. the link is giving error and page is not opening up.

  • +1

HT are an absolute shit show to deal with for warranty claims. It took 6 weeks and a threat to lodge a writ in County Court - their Filipino team fell for the bluff - for them to refund the money after I'd returned a bricked laptop (also a HP X360).

    • +1

Sorry to hear. Hope I have better luck than you did

      • +1

Me too mate. I was gutted because it was such a sweet 2-in-1 laptop. I just wanted a replacement and they fked me around something chronic just to get the money back.

        • Have you dealt with other stores? How do they compare?

          • +1

@qaz182: ACT, they've always been great. Have purchased multiple laptops & PCs with no issue & completed a return easily.
