  • Can someone suggest an PCIE to SATA card for it connect with some external hard drives?

    • This is a micro. I believe the m.2 slot already supports , but why not use USB3?

      • Heard horror stories about the USB3.0 not being reliable enough

        • +1

I've been running a media library for years off USB no problems, but would not trust it for a corporate database.
I figured you were more the former. Of course, be sure to use a resilient filesystem like ext4 or ntfs.

        • I'm only concerned about my photos back up using immich, what how many drives you have connected and what mechanism you are using to connect multiple drives?

          • +1

@TaurusHead: Just one permanent external, using supplied usb3 A-B cable.
Linux host on these Dells has bee very reliable.

  • +5

    This is a six-generations-old device.

    • +4

Which work well for home lab tasks - I run Home Assistant on one, solid efficient device for the job.

      • Uses way more electricity than a similarly priced minipc.

      • +3

You can get an N97 or N100 or N150 mini PC for this price (or less). Takes less space uses less electricity.

        • +1

          Aren't they much slower?

          • +4

@Suricate: Not really, especially for single core performance. This has an extra 2 cores so has better multi core performance but at a little higher power usage.

That said, given the price of new ones these days, these should be getting flogged for no more than half this price realistically.

      • +4

You can literally buy new mini PCs, made in 2025, with new parts, which take less space and use way less electricity, for around the same price or a bit more

Dell Optiplexes and other similar OLD computers should be selling for pennies. They are the very definition of e-waste.

        • Agree the price is higher than it should be for them these days.

I still run one with Proxmox and would prefer the extra cores even if it may use slightly more power, though I paid less than this for it.

        • +3

          ??

These are >8th gen Micro's and are very power efficient with a TDP between 25 - 35 watts - most new mini's are sub par at the same task IMO.

6 Cores, 6 Threads, 2.5ghz (3,5GHz turbo) @ 25-35watts in a solid proven unit is hard to beat at this price point.

    • +3

But "generation" is just maketting BS here. They change the numbering every year, regardless of whether there
are significant changes. Like the radiator grille on a car.

  • +11

    Not a good deal.
I bought the same model/specs over 1.5 years ago for under $200.

  • +6

7070 had better specs for a similar price just 3 months ago
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/909671

  • +3

$200 or more for computers that are 5+ years old, generations old (4, 5 or even 6 generations old!) is wild. They are essentially the e-waste of businesses. They should be selling for 100 and even that's being generous.

That people keep buying them is beyond me. You can buy a new mini PC with new parts made in 2025 for a similar price or a bit more. They even take less space and use MUCH less electricity.

    Terrible deal, garbage computer.

    • +3

I've been buying these garbage computers for years (SME business). I've started off with a 4th gen and I'm now on a 9th gen Intel. $200+ is just the right price point and I only upgrade when there's a good deal on eBay. Tell me what new MiniPC I can find with a comparable performance.

      • And these are much better built too. I don't get all the hate, but do agree the price is high.

        • Hate? We are talking about computers here. Why do we have to make this about feels? Nobody hates a computer. It's a 7 year old machine at this point. This is business e-waste. There are way better options for this price.

      • +1

Brother you should be a responsible consumer and spend 5 minutes around in Ebay and Amazon with the search term "mini pc" or "micro pc". Plenty people on this thread are saying this is a terrible deal, do you think everyone just decided to lie about a computer, of all things?

Nobody should be shopping around for you. GMKTec, BOSGAME, KAMRUI, MINISFORUM and a bunch of others in Amazon for example.

If you're gonna buy Optiplexes from 2018, and if you've been buying them for years for your business, at least source them yourself from businesses that are getting rid of them for much cheaper than this 200+ robbery.

These computers should be 100 or less.

    • You can upgrade the RAM in these though, which is important when running something like proxmox and a bunch of VMs.

I've got one of these, been rock solid for years, stuck an extra 16GB in, so have 32GB of ram and a nice fast 1TB nvme and it's great.

I've also got a GMKtec N97 mini pc, which is good and probably on par for single core stuff, but only has 4 cores and 12 GB RAM

To call these garbage is a bit of an overreaction

      • +2

They are garbage for the price*

  • +4

Dunno why you'd get this over some of those cheaper n100 micro PC's. They're cheaper, smaller, and just as fast.

Only upside to one of these is if you're planning on getting something like a lenovo 920 and using it as a multi port router (opnsense etc) with a nic card. Even then, most n100 micros have 2 gig ports which is enough for most people.

  • +2

Feels overpriced. I'd much rather wait for a brand new sub-$200 12th-gen mini PC deal to pop up on Amazon.

  • +5

I've bought some similar for $170-$190 a year or so ago. They should be sub $150.

  • Oh no…its happening again. The urge to buy an optiplex and insert a low profile rtx 3050 6gb gpu for that office sleeper build…

    • Those days are long gone - a low profile 3050 now costs $300 !

This is a micro form factor, but even if it were a small form factor with a PCIe slot, then with the graphics card you're spending over $500. For a six generations old, used machine 😂

You can buy a brand new gaming PC with a modern graphics card for $750 (example https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/910432) that's a gazillion times better than this old junk.

  • +5

Not a good enough price to list on ozb and also trying to invoke FOMO ‘ending tomorrow’. Deserves a neg for that.

For reference I got a Lenovo M710Q tiny over a year ago. Same cpu, but less ram and ssd size but only cost in the $150s. Over $200 is fishing for amateurs.

  • +3

Yeah way too expensive! These around usually around $170-180 dollars with better specs, understand that this has warranty but you can find cheap parts for barebones models that are usually only $50-75 dollars.

  • +1

Why would i buy this instead of something like this

    https://www.amazon.com.au/DreamQuest-3-6GHz-Desktop-Computer…

    • The Dell is extremely servable. One thumb screw and a sliding side gets you access to everything. Can support 2.5" SATA drive. The Dell has trustworthy BIOS and driver support.

I'm not saying the Dell is better, just saying why you would consider the Dell over other options.

      • Thenk you. Im on the look out for a mini pc for home use. Mainly for excel.

      • Don't forget the $100 saving

    • It doesn't come with windows OS.

  • +3

Terrible value… this is a 7 year old system. Can do much better, spending a bit more and buying a brand new AMD Ryzen Mini PC (with current gen tech) off Amazon or AliExpress.

  • +1

This is still newer than my current computer.

  • +4

And yet … not a single product or link has been posted by all these negs …

    • +1

You don't see bargains every single day. They appear all of a sudden, and you need to be quick to buy before they're sold out.

      • So people are just negging because of the vibe?

        • This, or "iT WaS cHeApER 3 YeArs AgO!!111!"

Do products not fluctuate in price based on availability? Were GPU, cars, and other electronics not increasing when there were shortages on supply or increased demand?

          • +1

@String name: They were around the same price or more 2 years ago. Personally I don't think it's that bad of a deal, I bought one of these 2 years ago for around $40 more than this and have been happy with it running proxmox with some VMs.

The Ozbargain crowd are ruthless though

        • +1

Just people comparing reliable older Dell hardware to new cheap Chinese crap

          • +1

@dav3: it's all made in china, dell just assemble, not saying dell doesn't use better parts sometimes but most of the nuc's have good components I'm very happy with mine & the nuc would be my choice, I woudn't pay this price for that age of dell

  • I have 6 7060s running 24 x7 for the last 3 years and 2 gmteck micros running 24 x7 for the last 1.5 years . Buy the 7060 would be my opinion if you are going to use a VM of any flavour. Specwise the micros may look cheaper both to purchase and run but build wise they do not compare and the weird issues with ports disappearing in the micros needing reboots. I however bought the 7060 at a much lower price the same specs with win 10 and have since upgraded 2 which again is a possibility with these not the micro ones. But that is my use case and opinion

  • These used Optiplex micros are not as bulletproof like most ppl think.
My experience with failure rate is uncomfortably high. I'm using these as desktops, not 24x7 stuff.

    • 7060 micro bought in 2023 - developing sleep issue sometimes cannot wake up blink yellow light
    • 7070 micro bought in 2024 - blinking yellow light pattern indicate motherboard died
    • 7070 micro bought in 2024 - the only 1 still fully working
    • Try replacing the CMOS battery. I have a 7070 that started to randomly go to sleep and not want to wake up. I was sure it would be a dying motherboard, or some other hardware issue. Replacing the battery (for what it's worth I also upgraded the BIOS firmware in the process) ended up fixing the issue. It's been running 24x7 for a few months now without going to sleep.

      • Believe me replace CMOS battery, reset BIOS, flash BIOS, are some of the first things that I have tried. I have even measured the battery volt to make sure it's not a dud.

        • These issues generally are CMOS related - pull the battery for an hour or so, make sure everything is completely reset, including doing things like reset the TPM in the BIOS, reflash firmware, etc etc. reseat CPU, reseat RAM.

If the only issue you're having is Sleep, then it can also just be an OS issue - use Hibernate instead, for example.

Have you tried replacing the power supply ?
