Accidentally Double Booked It My Name

I was buying flights for a family event in another state and I accidentally booked separate flights for myself and my dad under my name twice.

One is Perth to Adelaide the other Melbourne to Adelaide.

I've never had to present id on domestic flights unless using the non self serve bag drop desk. However we will both be flying simultaneously under my name and velocity membership. Will this present a potential problem with Virgin? I don't really want to pay to change the name on the flight.

I don’t think you get status twice so nice try?

  • +1

    you'll get 20percentrefund

      OP already knows the answer…

"I don't really want to pay to change the name on the flight."

But OP could always call Virgin and explain thier mistake instead of asking us what to do.

      Seems obvious to me.

Never (or maybe 20% of the time) attribute to malice, what can be explained as being a dum-dum.

  • +1

They’ll just think you are very wide and need two seats.

    • +17

Must be super wide if one flight is from Perth and one is from Melbourne.

      • 🤣

      • I didn’t read carefully did I!

        • it was still funny

What kind of ticket ? Do you have the same surname?

    $99 fee for a mistake on lite/saver.

Problem is name cannot be changed after checkin, so if you try to play dumb, and they stop you at the boarding gate it could be bad.

      What kind of ticket ?

      plane 🛫

      $99 fee for a mistake on lite/saver.

Seems a bit steep for a mistake.

    • +2

      $109 now.

    • and they stop you at the boarding gate

      Why would they stop you?

        • +1

They don't check IDs at the gate.

        • I am genuinely puzzled as to why this sort of thing is illegal. What's the prob? I thought only authoritarian states enforced tracking of people's movement? It's not the sort of thing I expected in Oz, although I'm getting shocked less with each passing freedom taken.

  • Are you sure you booked the right dates?

    • You'll probably have more success in transferring the flight to your name.

      at a cost…

      • Ahh yeah, $109. Gamble on them not checking?

Can you change or remove the Velocity number in one booking?
Its not unusual for father and son to have the same name. Assuming you are a dude, and did not enter a middle name.

As you say they rarely check ID, but same velocity number could raise a flag. Good luck 20% Jnr.

Thanks. That might be the best idea.

It's only a lite fare anyway so couldn't care less about missing out on the points/status.

  • I have done so just like how I order from Starbucks with a non-registered pesudo name. No issue for domestic flight.

    • And then not so long ago, Virgin put me on a international flight from Perth to Adelaide ( I think it was a inbound flight from somewhere else to Adelaide via Perth), they checked everything but let us escape the customs LOL

  • Your name John, and your dad's John? No problem.

    • They both have the name Rusty Shackleford

  • I travelled with my brother's passport. We did not look the same. Only now, when we are much older, we get wrinkles in the same place.

Grats on avoiding jail and getting wrinkles in other places.

On certain airlines you can get a refund if within 24hrs. Not sure about virgin or when you booked it.

    • +1

Yep qantas allows a refund for any reason within 24h

      • +2

        Conditions apply.**********************************************************************************************************************************
and same with Virgin, but OP spend time in Ozb instead of googling it or contacting them, and there is conditions :P

        • Yep, I should have mentioned that.
Doesn't apply if the flight is in less than 30 days and a couple of other conditions

  • -1

Just let it go until the airline has an issue with it, which they most likely will not

  • +1

Is this worth breaking the law for collecting a few hundred measly points? I don't think so

  • +1

they're lite fares, check-in online, have the boarding pass on the phone or printed out, scan it at the gate - you don't need to see anyone or show ID except if checking in bags and you want a hardcopy boarding pass.

I'd remove the velocity number though.

If you want the points, just make another account with the same name different DOB, same address, and family pool.

  • +1

It will be picked up and you'll possibly be offloaded. Pay the money to get the second name changed.

We have just come back from a trip to Adelaide.

It was only just before we left that I realised I had booked with the 'shortened' version of my name and not the correct one.

Nobody noticed a thing. Thinking back, in each flight (not that many, but a few) over the last few years, we have never been asked for ID to fly domestically.

    • I wouldn't use the word never, They usually don't check at the gate, but if there are any changes to the flights or the checking process, they do.

For OPs luck, they sometimes accept medicare card as a ID (none photo ID)

if that happens, OP need to rebook the flight at $$$$$$. So Risk that OP going to take $99 vs possibly $$$$, its bit more than risk you taking for car parking fine :)
