    Nice initiative.

It should be free for them all the time, except rush hours, 6-9 am and 4-7 pm. Get them off their cars. Oh also PTV should be much cheaper but we aren't close to that. Worst public transportation in any state.

      • I guess that's what happens when successive Governments do stuff all about upgrading it. Gonna be another 10/20/30!? years for stuff that should have been done 40 years ago.

  • +7

South Australia have free public transport for seniors throughout the year.

  • -6

Title is misleading. You need to be retired or work less that 35 hours per week.

  • +4

Meh. 50c all day, every day for everyone in QLD.

    Victoriastan BTFO.

    • +1

I wish every state did what QLD did with public transport.

But I'd also hate to live in QLD permanently. Die every summer from heat or get flooded. So I guess you can't have it all.

    • Meh 50c… FREE is better for Seniors!

Since 2019, all Qld Senior Card holders get FREE off-peak Buses & Ferries run by Brisbane City Council
      using Seniors GoCard

      <FREE Off-peak M-F 8.30am - 3.30pm, 7pm - 6am & all weekend>
      Other times 50c.

    • As someone from VIC, I can't tell you how much I hate PTV. This shit is not gonna get better unless everyone in Melbourne protests. I don't know if it's incompetence or malice. But I'll be voting according to this next state election.

      • What do you hate exactly? Just curious as someone who works for Metro. And what do you think a different Government will do better? Genuine questions.

        • +4

I hate how everyone is simply fine with "buses replace trains". I don't know what's wrong with PTV so that their upgrades/maintenance takes SOOO long AND so frequently. It's actually unbelievable. Normal countries try to finish this shit with as little interruption as possible yet here it's as if they are trying to proudly show that they are renovating some stupid stuff nobody cares.

How can you cancel the whole train line because a tree branch broke due to wind? Are you that incompetent to not maintain the area around railroads. It's your responsibility to maintain the road safety that includes pruning or cutting off dangerous trees close to railroads. How tf does it take so goddamn long when that happens? 11$ ticket btw.

I'm from a poorer country than Australia, and I don't remember a single instance this stupidity (BuSeS rEpLacE TraInS) has happened, and my home city has a MUCH more complicated rail system. It's incomparable.

Melbourne has the rail system of a 3rd world country with their shitty, slow and vibrating trains. They don't believe in suspension.

Gaslighting. When they cancel a service for whatever reason they remove it from the screens at stations and make you think that, that specific service never existed in the first place. You need to check the app/web to see there actually was supposed to be a service. To add to this, everyone knows "98% of services satisfied, 90% on time" is a bloody lie and everyone knows it. Bunch of crooks.

Outrageous bus stop cancellations. Whenever something small/insignificant happens they cancel all the bus stops in vicinity while they realistically only need to cancel 1.

AOs whose sole responsibility is to annoy regular people and prey on internationals as they SKIP over "troublesome" people because they are scared p***ies. I'm sure they spend far more on AO wages, and admin officers to enforce them. And no they don't scare enough people to keep touching on to justify them.

11 dollars!! ELEVEN!!! Where's all that money going? How can you justify first class price when you can't even provide economy class experience. This shitty public transportation deserves less than what Queenslanders pay.

Even if your travel is only a couple of bus stops you pay the full fee.

Why are there even private bus companies?

Furthermore, 2 hour travel is no longer possible if your route is long. This was supposed to cover the whole 1 way direction, that's no longer the case BECAUSE of how bad PTV is.

Idk why your ticketing machines are SO BAD like the rest of PTV. I feel bad for holding the Q as I board the bus. Did you go out of your own way to find these shitty machines? Not even the worst Chinese machine could be this bad, it must be custom ordered and assembled in Australia.

Honestly, a lot of things is probably because of massive overemployment. When something small happens you get 6 tradies with only 1 of them working and the rest watching. More than required AOs and admin officers to process them. Put turnstile gates to train stations, reduce ticket fee so people can actually justify tapping on for using bus and use your remaining AOs for trams. Useless protective officers. At least put them outside the stations instead of on the station where it's relatively safe anyway.

If you are incapable of providing a good service at least price accordingly. I'm sure you can come up with thousands of excuses regarding those points above, yet if others can do it so can PTV. It's not even Australian thing. Yea of course Tokyo metro is better than opal or whatever but PTV is uniquely bad among all Australian states. Countries poorer than Australia can do it.

I had A LOT of bad experiences with PTV. You can brush them off as anecdotal but so did everyone who ever had to use PTV.

Public transportation is especially important for low and middle income people(like me!) and it is state's responsibility to provide affordable and reliant public transportation and PTV fails on both.

PTV is my biggest motivation to get a car. I'd rather pay for petrol, pollute the world, pay for carpark than deal with this shitty PTV. Next time you complain about traffic, half the blame lies on PTV.

This is such a big issue for me I'll be voting according to this for the next elections.

I don't think this covers everything, but it's good enough.

          • @DrScavenger: Thats quite the list! And I appreciate you taking the time to give such a comprehensive reply. I"m genuinely sorry it's been such a shitty experience for you.

I obviously cant speak on behalf of the company/government, but as a front line staff member, it"s hard to argue with much of what you say! Not too much at all I would disagre with in there, honestly.

I haven't done a lot of rail travel elsewhere, so can't really compare, but its interesting to note you rate it so low, even within Australia.

Obviously the "PC" responses would be along the lines of greater distances and lower population and whatnot. Also perhaps higher safety considerations when it comes to "6 tradies with only one.of them working" if thats on-track a lot of it is controlled by legislation and National frameworks etc……

But that doesn't cover half of what you mention. So yeah. Probably valid criticisms.

The only other point i would make is that you probably can't hold the current governemnt responsible for the whole of the current situation. Decades of neglect goes into getting it to where its at. But whether they could be doing more to fix things is a whole other discussion..

Unfortunately I don't run the joint so can't fix much obviously. But I will certainly take on board what you've said. Thanks again for sharing.

Oh and there are definite changes coming..SRL obviously (lots of debate there too) A new ticketing system. And Metro's contract ending in 2027 will be another big one.

None of that will fix all the problems you mention, but it might be at least some steps in the right direction for the future. Time will tell I guess.

            • @Fredorishi: @Fredorishi One night there were bus replacements on a section of my line - I was coming home from the city in the middle of the night.
We all get off the train at the start of the bus section, we get on the bus, the bus starts driving - and actually makes quite good time (because it's 2am) - it drives past the 4 ish stations, and stops where the trains are again running from.
We all get off the bus, and it's about 5 minutes past the usual train departure time from this station - we all walk down to the platform, and after 5 minutes, I ask the platform lady where the train is.

Her answer : "It left ten minutes ago, on time."

Me : "But the replacement buses only arrived here 5 minutes ago ?"

Her : "So ? The buses are not synchronised to the trains".

And she said that with a straight face.

It's 2.30 in the morning, trains only run hourly at this time, we all have to wait on the platform for FIFTY FIVE MINUTES until the next train at 3.30am.

              Holy Jesus.

That was the moment I realised that PTV is run by idiots 😂

              • @Nom: Yeah. Thats poor form for sure. :(

We do generally try and sync the two, but communication can be a bit woeful during disruptions. Especially unplanned ones.

            • @Fredorishi: Sorry if it was too much. I'm genuinely disappointed by ptv and want/need it to be better.

Also, sometimes buses skip stations when they are late. I track the buses on PTV app and when they are late by like 15 minutes, they turn on their "not in service" lights while clearly having customers, drop some of them off in a slightly different bus station and move on asap without taking any new passengers. This happens like above in bus hotspots. If it's a bus stop in nowhere they just skip you with "not in service" signs on.
I don't know if this is an individual driver decision, company decision, or if I'm just going insane at this point. But "being too late" should not be a valid excuse to deny travel to the rest of passengers so you(the driver) won't look as late.

          • @DrScavenger: Oh. Have you been on the new HCMTs? They are MUCH better than the older stock. The first thing I said when I went on one was man, these things are soooo smooth! Lol.

The new tunnel opening up whenever it does (fairly soon) might help alleviate some of the disruptions too. Believe me. The staff hate bus replacements too! Sucks to be trying to provide customer service when the actual service is sub-par!

    • Wow.. so you can travel from Mackay to Brisbane for 50 Cents. Because that is the equivalence here. Travel in the whole state of Vic will be free.

      • Translink doesn't manage long distance intercity services, so no, you can't travel halfway across the state for 50c.

  • Sooo do i still tap on with my seniors myki?

    • How to travel during the free travel period

Remember to always carry your Seniors myki and Victorian Seniors Card with you on public transport. From Sunday 5 to Sunday 12 October 2025, tap on and off as usual, you won’t be charged.

On regional services that don’t use myki, just show your Victorian Seniors Card to the conductor or bus driver.

    • Yes.

    • +1

Obviously you didn’t read the other comments.

      • Wow! Another enlightening reply… My comment is completely valid within the context of this 'bargain'. Try again.

Look at the brilliance of this genius. Typing with alternating letter cases, then rolling her eyes. Truly a shining example of intellect.

Edit: She has even responded positivity below to a post also questioning free PT. You can't make this shit up.

        • +1

          Lol. Why so angry, sis?

Bit ironic you talk about "intellect" while raging about Senior Citizens being given free public transport for a week. sOooo iNtElLeCtUaL. Zero other people are ranting about it like you.

          What's your major malfunction exactly?

  • +1

Even though Seniors Week is well established and the dates known well in advance, the idiot youngsters making the PTV app still can’t make the fare calculations accurately reflect reality for the week.

    • -1

Ummmm. Why do you need to use a fare calculator to work out FREE travel? Maybe I'm not quite understanding what you mean.

  • -1

Great initiative, when are they doing this for young people?

    • +4

1 January 2026, free public transport in VIC for 17 and under.

    • -1

They should do it for ALL people. Public transport should be considered an essential service.

But hey, Victoria is so debt ridden they will screw you 6 ways from Sunday to give you a minor discount "here", then screw you righteously somewhere else.

      • +3

Public Transport User Association talks about fare reform but does not support free fares.

Why free public transport won’t work
The PTUA does not support free public transport. As our Myths page shows, the primary barrier to patronage growth is the lack of high quality networked services. It is significant that free public transport has not been instituted in any other city of Melbourne’s size.

While we have had free public transport for New Year’s Eve for several years, its success is driven by the large crowds attending a range of events offered in the CBD. Free public transport on Christmas Day has also been offered regularly, but in stark contrast, metropolitan services are relatively quiet (in part due to many suburbs having almost no service at all), and there is no shortage of cars on the road.

Free public transport would suck more than $500 million per year of fare revenue out of the system, which could be better spent improving services.

The Free Tram Zone introduced in 2015 has not benefited most existing or prospective public transport users, but has resulted in free rides for those who drive into the CBD, and far worsened tram overcrowding at peak times.

        • -1

Interesting. I have never seen that before. Thanks for sharing. Be interesting to see if Lt Frank comes back with a response. I'm looking forward to their next dose of hyperbole. :)

        • there are no improvements to our PTV services anyway?

  • +2

Will the senior get this message and use it for 8 days? Who made this policy?
    QLD: 50c

    • QLD (Seniors in Brisbane): 50c FREE off-peak since 2019

    • I don't live in Qld but are they able to travel around the whole state for 50c? Like from Mackay to Bris?
In Victoria this is a week where seniors can travel anywhere in the State for free or just $5.50 capped any other day of the year. Seniors with the applicable Myki get free public transport on weekends in zone 1 and 2 (metropolitan Melbourne) all year. Soon that will be expanded to the whole state. A lot of pensioners just have a Concession Myki but a Seniors is actually better.

Seniors card holders get regular news and information explaining this and other concessions throughout the year. No doubt it's backed by the current government.

      • +1

Capped at $3.80 on the weekend. Free within 2 consecutive zones. Just to be pedantic! ;)

Google tells me in Qld it's a "50c flat fare across all Translink services, regardless of how far you travel on the network". Translink seem to cover a decent chunk of the state although I'm certainly not familiar with it.

      • Translink doesn't operate long distance intercity services (that's QR), so no, you can't get halfway up the state for 50c. The discounted fares cover travel within Translink service areas, which are all over the state.

    • I believe Seniors week (As part of the month-long Senior's festival) has been running for 42 years if it's been part of it the whole time. So it would have been introduced by the Cain Labour Government in 1983 or thereabouts. You'd reckon after that amount of time, most Vic Seniors would be aware of it. Pllus current advertising, so yes they get the message and LOTS of them use it. I don't have the actual statistics at hand, but that's from my nearly 8 years experience at Metro. It's ALWAYS a busy week.
