Hmmm, it looks like an ok idea. I'm just wondering if instead of hitting my shin on a pedal am I going to hit my forehead on a pedal instead?

I've got a couple of the bike lifts hoisting the kids' trainset in the garage. So far it hasn't dropped on the car!

    • +1

      Is it supposed to?

Remind me again, why do i want my bike on the ceiling?

    • It gets the bike off the floor and out of the way when you're not using it?

  • same one as cellbikes.

    EDIT: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/74325

  • Anyone tried the scratch remover kit?

    • +6

You may need it when the bike falls on your car

Are these useful? It would seem to me that one would need a very high ceiling to be able to ignore them above. Bike 4ft, rope slack 1ft, person 6ft, space 1ft = 12 ft ceiling at least? (sorry about old units but still easier for me to picture).

I had one of these in the garage of my last (rental) place, it was very handy when we had both cars in there or working on projects. They aren't really meant for inside a standard house I think, more the open apex of a garage or large shed.

Imho they are more trouble than they are worth and not that easy for a single person operation.

A friend has this and tried to put a shelf in the area supposedly saved in the floor, but then you have to hold the cycle farther away as you are lifting it up.
He said it was just a fancy B$@#% thing.

Oh my god, I meant in the sense that not that easy for "one" person operation. if you were trying to joke, no one got it :-)

  • Can't fall from the ground :) but cheap!

long time lerker here. Hello all!

Regarding the bike lift: I picked up 3 of these on special for 4.99 ea from cellbikes.com.au (dont' bother checking, there are none there now) a while back. Seemed like a bargain but this is my experience…

I'm in a 2br unit, so space is at a premium for me so i installed one above my study desk. Turns out the bike is rather tricky to keep on the hooks as you hoist it and the first time I tried it fell off and I put a hole through my crappy ikea desk ($300) ouch. Could have been worse as the bike had $1500 carbon rims. A trip back to Ikea and 1x New desk later i'm still using the hoist, but only for my race bike as it doesn't need to come down very often.

    I recommend getting one if:
You can hold your bike as you raise it (i.e it isn't going too high in the air)
You don't need to take the bike down too often
The bike isn't being hoisted where it can be bumped by anything
You aren't keeping it above anything which could potentially be damaged by a falling bike.

  • I use one to hoist my kayak up to the ceiling, works ok (although the kayak is about 23kg so it's overloaded)

  • Just bought the indoor bike trainer, cheapest second ones on EBay and gumtree were $100+. Would have been quite happy to pay the special advertised price of $59.99 for it, but got a pleasant surprise when it scanned at $39.99. Not sure if it was store specific error (Ashgrove QLD), or across the board.
