Friends Sceptical of Cashback Sites

Tried to refer a friend to Top Cashback and he went on this massive rant about how it's collecting my data and I have no privacy as a result.

I am pretty tech savvy, and privacy conscious but I don't have any concern about cashback sites. Not had any issue with Top Cashback especially. A few things not tracking on the other sites which are always rectified.

Can understand the scepticism but after using these sites for 15 years and no issue, I can't see the problem. It always seems to be people who are sceptical who also don't like ideas to save money and I think cashback is a very nice bonus!

Are there really valid reasons to worry about cashback other than not tracking?

this massive rant about how its collecting my data

Well…at the core idea, he's not wrong - they are collecting data and it would be naive to believe they are not using same data for financial gain whether thats on-selling raw data or processing it etc.

How much potential for damage that could be done (seeing as in theory cashback sites wouldnt have your card details for normal click throughs), and how much of that said data is also not already exposed in one of the other thousands of leaks is up for debate however.

I dont have any concern about cashback sites.

How can you say you are tech saavy…but no concerns? Unless you are implying all your data submitted is faked (burner address, numbers, only use paypal for cashout etc.)

Shopback also had a data leak back in 2020, and thats just known ones. I have to wonder how many have been compromised but not aware.

Well theres limited data they could get. What im buying. I dont care if they know. I also dont care if they know what bank im with because I chop and change.

  • Well there are real concerns as you are giving all this info to random third party affiliate sites. Anyone at all can make a cashback website, I could make one right now, and you probably even agree in the T&C that they will immediately sell all your information to China and Russia.

Does it matter though? If you want to do it you can, if they don't want to they don't have to.

Dealing with any Aus company that gets your details, they probably do the same things with your data and if they get caught they will not get punished either. But this ads a new layer of potential identity theft, depending on how much they verify you before paying the cashback.

      • I think them knowing which bank you are with are the least of your concerns.

Your friend is right, you just don't care about that aspect of your privacy that you're selling for a few bucks here and there.
Consider why cashback sites exist - how do they make their money?

The only pass on part of the rebate.

I figure they already have most of my data. Might as well get paid for it.

    • Exactly. Optus and Qantas and everyone else we deal with are either leaking or selling it (most likely both) so what's it matter.

Well, first thing is get a new friend…

    Second…
No, that is all I got. Nailed it in one.

They do take your data but honestly 'who cares'?

i mean if you have signed up to ANY social media service or a online competition loads of people have your data

  • Well your friend is entirely correct. They are monetizing tracking you. I've personally been luke warm on these sites as the return to me is often miniscule and not worth my time and effort. Occasionally there is a decent cashback offer that might work for me, but I do this understanding that I'm giving a lot of private data.
