Advice on Electricity+Gas Plans and How to Best Use The Deals OzBargain Style

Hi Everyone,

This is one of those things where I am not really sure how to go about and haven't really had much guidance/life experience with and I was hoping for some advice on the best way to save or things to look out for. Kinda like, explain to me like Im a fresh 18 year old type thing.

I am currently with EnergyAustralia for Gas and Electricity and the last few quarter bills have been really pricey. Im living in a house in NSW and our avg usage is between 10-15kw per day.

I've never really switched electrical providers or anything, and I'm not really sure on what to look out for, or what the best way to capitalise on deals etc.

I understand this is a bit of a reach out, but I would love it someone could comment on how they go about using deals posted to get the most out of money, how often they switch, and things to just keep an eye out for.

I am an NRMA member and was looking at the Engie deal as it seems I can get $250 welcome bonus and it seems to be somewhat cheaper (except Off Peak and Peak costs are the same).

Ive also used the EnergyMadeEasy site, but its not super accurate as my meter got changed to a Smart Meter and Im needing to put everything in manually.

Thank you all for your time

:)

    10-15kw a day is nothing

      1. This isn't advice or helpful at all.

      2. $500-600 a quarter is though. If I can save a $50-100+ each quarter I can put that elsewhere such as other bills or repairs or investments.

Check out the plans with the bigger upfront welcome credits.
But they usually have higher rates/charges

    • 0kw a day is nothing!

Check for lowest rates every 4-6 months and switch. It’s not more complicated than that. Never sign up for a long term contract. If you get a bonus, ensure there’s no clawback if you leave within a few months.

    • Ill have a look into Clawback stuff with Engie and keep an eye out. Thank you!

It will depend a lot on your area, but i have a lot fewer options for gas than electricity, so I mostly don't get combined plans, it limits my options too much. I move the gas a lot less often than the electricity, in part because the gas company always insists on waiting for a meter read so the process is a lot slower for gas.

    • Yeh I think Gas is quite limited from the Gov website. Thank you!

If you have solar, there are providers that offer completely free electricity from 11-2PM. You can then organise yourself to routinely switch on washing machine, dishwasher, air con/heating, steam mop, EV charging and any other heavy electricity usage devices on during that free period. It makes a difference.

    • I dont have solar but I've been considering it, this is great advice, thank you!

Ovo offers free electricity (no solar required) between 11-2PM.

The maths didn't stack up for me as I wouldn't be able to shift enough usage into that window to offset their higher (than what I'm on now) usage charges outside those hours.

Also consider referral offers when you churn.

      • I switched to OVO, for the free 11-2 electricity. I work from home so can queue everything up to run during those times. I HAD solar, but inverter died (waiting for a buddy to come and replace it). According to OVO app, i'm using on average 8.74kW per day but i will say that since i switched to OVO, I have been more electric conscience.

    • We use this with OVO (no solar or EV) and load shift to the free time, only had water heater and wall heater on gas, swapped them to heat pump and RCAC with rebates and removed the gas line from the curb too. 95cents supply with 35 cents peak (11-2 free), as I remember.

You don't need to have solar to get OVO free electricity plan.

      • You did when I signed up. It also specifically had to be less than 5 kW.

Just tried my previous address with no solar and they only offer the One Plan with no free electricity.

        • Maybe changed it now given there is so much surplus power during the middle of the day.

Grab a bunch of past bills, jump on https://wattever.com.au/ and plug in the details from the bills. The energy provider that is good for one person isn't necessarily good for another. Check the plans it recommends closely as it's not always 100% accurate.

  • Don't use commercial energy comparison sites, they just direct you to sites that pay the highest commissions.

Use the Government site and don't be complacent, check every six months for better deals.

The Govt Compare sites have spent years perfecting their "differentiation, but your savings in one area will always be offset by increases in others. You need a spreadsheet and time to even get close to a comparison
