        Are you an athlete

        • +20

Not an athlete until you conquer Mount Druitt.

          • +2

@ATangk: You need to be both an athlete and a warrior to conquer the eshays at Mt Druitt lol

    • +1

Yeah thanks OP. This is perfect for my upcoming Mount Sugma base camp trek!

This’ll perfect for when I tackle Mount Waverley

    • Don't underestimate Mount Wycheproof

    • It's actually a nice walk from Salisbury up to the summit through Toohey forest. Saw a couple of koalas on the walk.

Nice thanks OP I was looking for one for my upcoming Mount Isa base camp trek

    • You would need this just for the water bottles

      • Plenty of watering holes in the Isa. There's even a decent lake. Been a while but they also had the best fish (barra) and chips "in the country." Well, seemed that way at the time.

        • Steak at the buffalo club.

I've owned a farpoint for many years now (and I love it) but I wouldn't use it for a decent multi day hiking trip unless I had to. It's pretty heavy, doesnt have a proper frame and lacks useful pockets for stowing/grabbing things quick while on the move.

    • There are better dedicated hiking packs, but it’s more than adequate for multi-day hikes (inc. ABC) while backpacking. It won’t let you down.

Enjoy your trip, OP, and watch out for the leeches!

Awesome pack for travel. My favourite. Wouldn't use it for hiking though.

  • Nice thanks OP I was looking for one for my upcoming Mt Majura base camp trek

Nice, thanks OP! Been looking for one for my upcoming fortitude valley base camp trek

  • Amazing price. I've had one for a few years and its excellent for travel. Controversially, I use it as a daypack as I can fit my camera gear and shopping into it without having to go back to the hotel but its super comfortable even when loaded up.

Nice thanks OP I was looking for one for my upcoming Mt Wank base camp trek

Great bag but I wouldn't use it for a hike, it's a great one bag solution for travel (the dimensions are just under standard carry on dimensions).

Also this looks like the past season bag, osprey has since released an updated one.

I used to use a Farpoint 40 for onebagging but decided it’s too big. If you aren’t travelling by plane then it’s a great option, but the 7 kg carry-on limit for airlines in this part of the world means it can only be half-filled.

I have since used a Decathlon NH500 and an Osprey Daylite 26+6 and they are both excellent options for air travel imo.

      • Thanks, I've been tossing up whether it was worth getting bigger than the 26+6, but that's really good insight. I guess the only good reason was if you had big and light items, or were happy to pay extra for carry on and only want one bag.

        • It’s still great for items with a lot of packaging that is very light.

Just to add to this, on the flipside, a backpack like this is great for parents, who can stuff extra kilos (from shared itinerary) and have one less thing to carry / leaving hands free for holding kids hands, etc.

Also good for stuff like nappies, that take a lot of room, but don't weigh much.

(I don't have this specific backpack, but have a 38L Kathmandu equivalent, from when they were on clearance cheap.)

      • +1

7kg carryon limit yes but there’s a fair amount that you can wear if they do in fact weigh your bag.

99% of the time they do not so you can easily take 10kg and properly fill the bag.

      • Agreed, still have the original version for bus/train travel or when I’ve got a heap of gear to haul, but currently away for a month and the daylite 26+6 works way better and no issues with budget airlines.

      • I used mine solely for air travel from Africa to central Asia to Asia to Europe and the Pacific, and has worked for me great. Granted, I use packing cubes. Never failed me or broke a zipper even when packed to the brims.

Also, your option is a great option too

Nice thanks OP I was looking for one for my upcoming Toohey Mountain base camp trek

All jokes aside this is a backpack for maximising your carryon NOT for serious hikes. I use it on every overseas trip including multiple week trips in SE Asia with 7 kg luggage. But I would strongly disadvise using it for serious hikes.

That being said I did use it to climb Clouds Rest in Yosemite (34 km one day round trip) but I knew what I was signing up for.

Just a heads up, the new version was just released 5 days ago.

Main difference is the laptop opening is at the top now, and the front water pocket holders use stretchy mesh.

    • Sensible improvements

  • I wish I had this backpack for my Annapurna Base Camp trek (2013). I just remember taking my college bag. Enjoy your trek.

  • +5

This isn't a great hiking backpack. Terrific travel backpack.

Have the 30L version (Porter) and it served me quite well for 2 weeks in Europe, travelling as carry-on only. Can vouch for this!

  • Love mine, awesome for carry on trips and far easier to cart around compared to a roller bag if you are transiting about.

  • Thanks. Need it for my Mount Waverly trek!

  • Nice thanks OP I was looking for one for my upcoming Everest base camp trek

  • Is a travel pack, not intended for hiking.

Nice, thanks OP, I was looking for one for my upcoming hike to Mount Disappointment.

    Hopefully, I won't be disappointed.

Appreciate the comments saying they're not excellent for trekking, I think I am more aware now after purchasing however, I think this will be versatile enough for my needs (constant backpacking) but also wanted something larger than my usual Northface Recon (29L) which I have been getting on with (but not clamshell opening).
I will have to compromise with this for the trek, I don't see myself doing many more treks in the future to consider buying a dedicated trekking backpack :D

  • 40L is pretty big, good for hostel travelling, i bought a Quasar 28L for odd hikes with the boys and it became my daily work bag.

i can vouch for the warranty. Osprey have fixed my 10+ year old bag, a buckle on one of the shoulder straps broke, they fixed it and sent it back to me. probably 5 years ago i lost some of the zipper pulls and they sent those out too. What a winner.

  • Great travel backpack, however I will also confirm that this is NOT a backpack suitable for multi-day treks. It's far too unstable, not rigid, and hip support isn't correct.

You'll want to be looking at the Osprey Stratos or Atmos range for a serious trundle.

  • Saw this yesterday but I think it might be the old model. This one might not open like a flap like a luggage

  • Bought a smaller Osprey bag earlier this year and just love it. Excellent quality bags with thoughtful touches, like a key hook which I use all the time. Recommend the brand to anyone looking.

  • might want something else for hiking. e.g. osprey exos

  • I did something similar with one. My recommendations, pack your bag then take half of the stuff out. Get a different bag something around 35l with a proper frame would be good.

  • Just bought Macpac Torlesse v2 35L last weekend for $140ish. Went on just half a day hike with it since then, I like it but hopefully didn't make the wrong choice by not getting this for extra 50% + 5L

  • meh, tomtoc is 1/2 the price and just as good.

  • I’ve had this bag (mostly same design, I think a different name) for over 10 years and still love it. It’s still held together perfectly well with minimal wear.

Fantastic choice for a one bag carry-on for travel, but I’d never want to hike with it.
