Non Mainstream Forum/s for Informing Self - for a Different POV, for Perspective

No sure where this goes MOD.

I’m not looking for forums of conspiracy crap, just considered level rational analysis and civil argument about what is or may be going on behind the scenes in the the world as it
is presented on the MSM, without the the dissembling of politicians and editors and media owners, or other vested interests. Places where people say it as it is.

Forums are better where many individuals engage, rather than single sources.

Where do you go?

not looking for forums of conspiracy crap

what is or may be going on behind the scenes in the the world as it
    is

Well surely there is some overlap?

    • Some, but not to the extreme. Rational … and where censorship isn’t employed.

      • +11

The reality is anywhere that meets your requirements is going to be utterly riddled with conspiracy nutters and cookers.

    • +8

Where can I theorise with likeminded individuals that the mainstream media and politicians are hiding things from the public behind the scenes for their own ends? No conspiracy theories though.

Above bolded errors, plus the unneccessary Title Case - unless this is all about selling a book titled as such?

      Formum
      Perspectiove

I thought it was asking for some form of cross between mil* and cu*kold sites

      • Good for Inforning Self!

      • "I did it all Formum" - but she didn't even say thank you !

  • +11

A spelling checker might be a good start before you engage in said forums.

Most forums or platforms will have some form of bias and censorship/rules set out, so anywhere you go will be moderately curated.

Places where people say it as it is.

What it is, is subjective and relative to different people. There's no one-set view of the world or any concept therein. Everyone has a different perspective based on their knowledge, experiences, beliefs, anecdotal evidence, ignorance, etc.

http://reddit.com/r/changemyview/ might be a suitable starting point to read multiple sides.

    • -1

Not everyone, but I get the idea. I’ll have a look at the reddit thread. Thanks

      • +2

Even 'changemyview' will ban people for having the wrong view, it's ridiculous what Reddit has become. I used to love it.

  • +33

Behind the scenes? Mate, are you paying attention to what is happening out in the open at the moment?

Trump and his mates are getting FILTHY rich in the open, and deploying US armed forces into its own cities.
Israel are destroying an entire nation, right in the open. They systematically destroyed medical infrastructure and everything else they could so they could stay in government.
Russia is waging war against another nation, right in the open. See the drones being flown into their apartment buildings, the weapons of terror are back and controlled with joysticks.

You think there is more BS going on?

    I'll tell you a secret.

There's nothing you're ever going to find out that will explain the world to you. Stop trying to explain it - it's just a bunch of people trying to be happy and other people praying on the weak because they're psychopaths. Cookers don't have the answers either friend. They have COVID, sunburn, and probably some kind of VD

Enjoy the capitalist bukkake while you still can!

          • -5

@7ekn00: I really thought OzB was more creative and less condescending, my bad. But I've also seen the mob mentality at work.

            • +1

@JH100: OzB is just another forum. Good luck finding something that meets your needs. In my experience, they are all the same.

        • Meh, you hardly have any. Some posts get hundreds of 'em, you haven't even reached amateur status yet.

          • @Muppet Detector: Hey Muppet. Is that meant as an insult?

            • @JH100: Nooooo, the one about being an amateur cos you haven't got many negs?

Noooooo, in fact no posts in here were meant to be mean or insulting.

The one about the negs was meant to be supportive sort of.

There's dudes in here that treat negs like team sport.

              • @Muppet Detector: Thanks :-). But there are mean replies, or just replies that are so far off the mark as to be easily taken as irrelevant, some deliberately so. Replies from people who just don't get what I'm saying, while its fairly obvious in the first post. Why I repeat 'read the text'.

Anyway, enough for tonight … 👋

                • @JH100: ozbargain is nowhere near as bad.

I suggest reading some books on psychology and you'll understand the trend of posts and replies.

Sometimes people are just in a bad mood?

      • +6

        Did I say that?

Where are you going to read "all of it"? Is that even possible? What are you REALLY seeking?

Is there stuff going on that's secret and nefarious? Yes.

Is there some kind of world shadow government controlling everything? Mate, governments can barely run their country well and keep ANYTHING secret. If you think that governments are the bad guys, then the bad guys have really sold you a dummy because they're often doing their thing in plain sight, as I pointed out. Look at Musk. He's COMPLETELY changed his politics in only a few years. How can you explain that? It's not difficult. Yet people think he's amazing because… aspirations.

Do you think you get to be a billionaire by behaving morally? How much power does INFINITE money get you? Why do we, or governments, allow that? We didn't used to.

      • I think it was clearly stated that the items noted are the things out in the open. So by definition, not everything?

    • +19

This is the truth forsaken. There is no secret cabal of illuminti puppet masters in control of the world. The main players are brazen in achieving their goals!

OP, what you're asking for is nearly the definition of a conspiracy theory. A secret forum, uncensored by the elite, where the truth is revealed.

Just get your news from reputable sources. They have the resources to research the real story not some guy on reddit.

Try Insiders on abc. They wrap up the week's political events and always make sure that have left and right viewpoints. Planet America is also great at explaining the madness in the USA.

  • +5

Anywhere you go will have people with vested interests.

The problem with "behind-the-scenes" forum is that they're even more likely to have vested interests. Whether it's people trying to scam you, or people trying to push conspiracy theories - it's significantly more likely in those areas.

It's much better and safer using things out in the open as it means they're more open to people criticising it and pointing out why it's wrong/right. You're just asking for trouble or to end up joining some cult.

    • Sure, but you are presupposing gullibility.

Appreciate it as a well intentioned warning anyway.

      • Just look at the bandwagons people get on these days. We've produced a gullible generation.

Places where people say it as it is.

What makes you think those people have any idea of what is going on?

Rational discussion on what is going on behind the scenes is an oxymoron, if that information is readily available then it's not behind the scenes. If you're reading a discussion on what is going on it's not going to have a scrap of evidence behind it. Deciding what's going on without data to back it up isn't any better than a conspiracy theory (no matter how rational it sounds).

You're far better off consuming a wide range of resources and having the critical thinking skills to identify why it's valuable.

    • -6

I'm sure you've heard of reading between the lines.

      • +8

That is where the critical thinking skills come in. All you seem to be looking for is people to spitball theories on what is really meant by someone.

But you're your worst enemy if you start doing that, because humans can't look at something objectively.

I get the appeal of people looking at things from new perspectives (and I read a lot of op-ed pieces because of that, even ones I strongly disagree with), but it sounds like you want some kind of Enders Game situation where the smartest minds float to the top. That doesn't happen in reality.

        • -1

Don’t read too much between the lines.

  • +1

4chan, bonus will not be raped by e-karen

    • -2

      One good one. 👍

  • +7

I’m not getting the dog whistle here. Are you after a David Icke lizard people theory, or the protocols of Zion, or the Bilderbegs or Denver Airport one world government camps?

Why operate behind the scenes when you can just do it all in the open? You can’t get richer than the banks being bailed out, you can’t get more powerful than the guy getting given a luxury jet. It’s literally in the paper every day.

    • -6

Don't be so obtrusive. Or obtusive. Read my text, it speaks for itself. Nothing fantastic or conspiratorial.

      • +3

So you want a secret forum that talks about secret stuff that doesn't contain fantastical or conspiratorial content, right?

        What sort of topics?

Whirlpool has an in the news sub forum that is sort of secret as well as the pool room which nobody is supposed to know about though everybody does but just doesn't admit it.

Then there's the dark web, I hear there's some pretty wild stuff in there to explore with minimal moderation or government oversight…until there is…

        • Very clever … I'll give it due consideration.

  • +3

Try Google, the AI function up the top seems to make up all sorts of stuff that agrees with what you want it to say.

The bonus is that you can keep trying until you get the answer that you want and there's no hecklers, pearl clutchers or angry lynch mobs feverishly perched over their big red neg buttons doling out street justice the only way they know how.

  • -1

Read my text again, you’ll get the idea. It's not difficult.

    • Hey, I just googled and found this - there's a whole list of discussion forums

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_forums

I went looking for an American one that was frequented by a bunch of eBay traders about 10-15 years ago. Can't remember the name, thought it was something like Round Up? It was a real wild, anything goes knees up kinda place where nobody minded their manners and said any and every thought bubble that entered their minds.

It was a biff a second, certainly not for the feint hearted but there wasn't anything they were afraid of talking about and no opinion they weren't prepared to offer (and shred to pieces in a public display of humiliation and shame).

Not sure if that's still around, somebody on the US boards may know, or the Stringers on the Au board if it's not on that list.

      • Thanks, but not my thing.

But it's also good to know what you don't want.

  • +1

I used to read Ground News but haven’t for a while. Looks like you may have to pay for a subscription now. https://ground.news/about

    • Someone just gifted me a subscription and it's such a great resource - I wish there was an Australian-based version (though it does cover Australia in international news) - the analysis of sources is really interesting and valuable.

    • Behind the paywall - https://archive.md/o7pzK - seems to be blocking access through VPN's though.

  • Try reading The Guardian. It's an alternative to Murdoch, and covers a wide range of topics.

One of the reasons people can feel so overwhelmed by the news, is the sheer quantity available from multiple sources.

You will never find 'the truth', but you can identify trustworthiness by curating your sources, and focussing on those written by people qualified to undertake analysis.

  • +2

You are better off just getting an understanding of your own biases and being able to recognise when they might be triggered or played into. Couple this with some good logical reasoning skills and you will be able to read every forum, from the cookers to the neo-liberal capitalist ones and find the nuggets of truth and clarity in each of them…
I recently read Yuval Noah Hariri's book "Nexus" which delves into the principles of subjective reality and objective reality. These I think should make up the foundation of your understanding of everything going on around you. Couldn't recommend this enough

  • +1

You wont be able to find one forum or comment section not leaning one way or the other. Look at a variety of sources

  • +5

    This no longer exists.

The majority of the internet has been co-opted and is controlled by jobless losers who dictatorially control every aspect of their little fiefdoms.

When it comes to anything remotely political or controversial it's nearly useless to discuss it on the internet now. Wikipedia, Reddit, social media in general, they're all awful places now and you'll likely get banned quickly if you say the wrong thing.

The places where you can have an open opinion are also almost always useless as they're little echo chambers for either the extreme left or right wing types. Facebook, discord, etc. it's all useless.

The other contributing problem is people are extreme psychos these days and will berate, try to dox, try to mass report, ban, or do anything to shut down anyone who thinks different to them.

Hilariously, perhaps twitter is the only place left where you could have an open discussion - the problem with that is though it's likely going to devolve into useless drivel and hate very quickly.

Times have changed, people can't have amicable disagreements anymore.

Everything today is: "you're either with us, or against us"

    • Echo chamber is right. The soap box was smashed by jackboots a long time ago.

A mob once stormed the Capitol looking for proof of wrong doing. They found nothing but bills…and doodles.

  • OP is looking for somewhere that doesn't exist. Any place that allows all points of view will attract conspiracy theorists and people placing all the blame for why their life isn't going well on some other group.

But, go ahead. Give 4chan a go and see if you like it. Everything is allowed there except CSAM. A true, fully open forum of ideas anyone is allowed to contribute to.

  • +2

X (twitter) is basically uncensored now - other than that which is required legally by the law of the US and various other countries.

You will essentially find every point of view, just be warned that this includes a lot of BS and actual professional propaganda.

So exercise critical thinking and verify information, especially until you’ve built trust with specific users you follow.

But you will get the news first, and unfiltered from the primary source.

    • This is probably the best answer. X with a heavily curated feed to ensure no bots or clickbait accounts will get you a decent news feed with a few half decent comments under them.
There's definitely a lot of garbage on there but will enough effort it's a refreshing source of the latest information with no spin.

      • Yes, X, despite it's owners politics is a repository of a wide spectrum of view. I tend to avoid mainstream SM and all the ads and videos.

Qantas Chairman's Lounge- ask Lidia Thorpe for an invite.

  • Thanks for some well considered responses, some containing interesting threads, too many to reply to each.

Came across this the other day, some might find it useful - https://cpd.gov.ua/en/manuals/handbook-weapons-of-informatio… - given the Ukrainians are at the cutting edge, and apparently doing a good job of it.

  • +1

Why not right here? Are we too normie for you?

    • Haha … I’ve seen some great and humorous threads here. In fact I keep an eye on Highlighted Discussion Topics. Also seen some arrogant monstering of naive individuals too.

  • +1

"We tend to start with our prejudice, and then only accept information that supports it, while rejecting anything that doesn't."

so the search for online "Places where people say it as it is" can sound like a failure to recognize your own perspective and assumptions about truth

    attribution bias:
If someone agrees with me, they're a logical truth seeker.
If someone disagrees with me, they're emotional and misinformed.
If someone agrees with someone who disagrees with me, they're crazy conspiracy theorists.
If someone disagrees with someone who disagrees with me, they're a sensible rational thinker.

    • Or it could say the opposite.

  • I like Dr Idz on Facebook (and I'm sure elsewhere).
It's not a forum, but at least there's some decent content.

He looks at peer reviewed studies and dispels many of the myths spewed by influencers

Not perfect, but much better than most of the content out there.

  • 👍 Had a look, certainly a popular fellow.

  • does any conspiracy theorists actually think they are nutters? by definition you'd be lacking insight to be one

the fact is no one actually knows what happens behind the scenes apart from a select few, and there are numerous versions of the 'truth' you are looking for depending on perspective, that are drowned out by stories made up by basement dwellers on the internet

  • .lusers on Usenet

  • Just stop reading garbage on the internet where any idiot can with very little effort publish crap.

If you want, the world has millions of books you can read, some of those are even conspiracy books written by the extreme crazies.

    They are nuts because:
    Social influences
    Bad childhood
    Bad environment growing up
    Terrible education growing up

I suggest try googling stoicism and starting off life with that and going down that rabbit hole instead of the conspiracy crap / politics as they are etc etc.

Just understand people are complex and crazy and that's it.
