TV 50"-60" Secondary for Kids - Budget $500- $600

Any recommendations for around ~$500-$600.

I've tried Aldi and some other cheaper ones, and the OS is so slow and unresponsive it's not ideal for impatient kids

Our main TV is LG OLED G2 and it's great, responsive and 10x the price prepared to spend lol. This is for when kids are over from extended family and use will be more limited to a few times a week, built in smarts would be ok but have a Fire Stick if needed and prob would work out better that way since already logged in etc.

Marketplace TV and use the Fire stick or a Chromecast with remote

considered and looked at marketplace and just for the sake of sanity prefer dealing retail for the extra..

      • +3

        That doesn't make sense.

        • -1

          yep

      • I seen 40-55 inch OLEDs for $100 on Marketplace near me. I wish I had space to put them, I'd take a punt on some of them.

      • Replace sanity with laziness, most marketplace transactions are smooth.

Look at a Ffalcon TV from JB. I got a 55" for my office for $400 and bought a 32" for the Caravan.

    Very happy with them.

was worried they'd be sluggish on the navigation and menu's etc?
mostly netflixing considering kpopdemonhunters madness - but worried was going to be similar to the aldi one I got where it took 5mins to "warm" up and use the menus

Look it isn't as fast as my Samsung, but it isn't super slow and annoying. But once you have loaded the app you want to use, it is fine. The 32" in the Caravan we used for the kids and it was fine. I couldn't justify spending a lot on a TV for the occassional use and for the kids.

    • Yeah bought a 50 inch one recently for the study room. Won't get used constantly so didn't want to over capitalise.

Perfectly decent and Google TV works well.

TCL when on sale… Wait for Black friday.

    or $535 now…

    • Sluggish OS isn’t exactly antonymous with TCL.

      • It's better than the cheaper brands by far…

        Also has better sound.

        • 2nd hand Sony/LG/Samsung’s for that price are superior in almost every regard.

You can get great 55 and 65” OLED’s (including G series) for well under 1k. There was even a 98” Samsung Q70C that went for 1k a few weeks back.

            @eccaz:

2nd hand Sony/LG/Samsung’s for that price are superior in almost every regard.

Not compared to the latest TCLs.

Also, you won't get a 3 year warranty with an old model, 2nd hand Sony/LG/Samsung…

            • @jv: Didn’t take the legendary jv to be a member of the TCL cult. I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, TCL are great for cartoons and horrible for sport.

Even 1st gen OLED’s shit all over TCL’s current flagship model.

              • @eccaz: Perhaps OLED's are a bit better for sport, but some people prefer a Brighter picture, Longer lifespan, Enhanced HDR, Greater colour volume, better warranty and much better bang for buck…. 🤣

OP wants it for a kid's tv anyway, doubt they will be watching F1 every day…

                • @jv: Longer lifespan? TCL’s are bright and cheap in the short term, and that’s it.

An odd mast to nail your colours to, given how hard you’ve worked to establish yourself.

For what it’s worth Sony’s are the best for sport (and general motion handling), be it LED or OLED. OLED’s are the best for shows/movies.

                  • @eccaz:

                    Longer lifespan?

                    Definitely…

                    and much better warranty.

                    • @jv: Both are untrue.

They have a shorter lifespan and TCL are a horrible company to deal with.

                  • @eccaz:

Sony’s are the best for sport

Maybe about 5 years ago… They have fallen behind…

                    • @jv: Completely wrong. Sony is still king of motion processing.

                      The legend is unraveling.

                      • @eccaz:

Sony is still king of motion processing.

                        Not anymore..

Agreed, TCL best for budget TVs

when i was a kid, there was just one TV in the lounge room that everyone watched … in the house next door

    • -2

Yeah, but now we are "green", we care about "climate change", we install solar panels and batteries, we buy EVs……
and we have 1 TV in each room. Sometimes in the toilet too!
      Go figure.

      • +2

@Max I know you are just being sarcastic (given your extensive history of anti-woke, anti-green, anti-renewables, anti-big government, etc posts), but interestingly modern LCD TVs use roughly half the amount of power as old CRTs (even if they are twice the screen size).

So maybe the good old days, before we were green, were not completely, 100% good?

        • -2

I can't be bothered to check your history as you did. I have better things to do and I really could not care less. But from your comment I guess your posts would be pro-woke, pro-green, pro-renewables, pro-big government.
          Pro-BS sums it up.
Anyway, still no good reason to have 4 TVs in a 3 bedrooms house.

No you don’t, otherwise you wouldn’t be on here.

I checked my 55" OLED out of curiosity. It was using 50W.

Only plebs have tvs in the toilet. I have a projector wall

        • Sitting on the toilet should be an immersive experience.

          • +1

            @tenpercent: It's a 4D experience when there is a big enough splash…..

      • Toilet TV? That's a great idea.

When you were a kid, kids could go outside and play, without mandatory supervision or other residents calling cops because of scary delinquents or digging up needles at the park.

  • I live in a 40 square house with 1 65” TV ;)

  • Seems to be a lot of options in the no name brands from Kogan, Big W, JB Hifi, etc… starting at around the $350-$400 mark for a 50", usually with some kind of "Smart" features but likely to be equally painful to what the Op described. IMO if picture quality isn't the main focus for the kidis, just get whatever size looks decent and use the money saved to buy a cheap streaming box/Apple TV/etc.

Given new ATV coming out soon (apparently) the current one will probably be discounted to clear out too and IMO it's the best streaming box (particularly if you are in the Apple ecosystem).

  • +1

Literally any TV with a Fire Stick or similar will be absolutely fine.

  • FFFFFFFFalcon?
    Kidding… :)

Thanks for the post Op. I was looking for the same thing. I dunno why people keep voting down your replies. I appreciate your honesty.

$100-$200 TV from marketplace will do the job.

  • +1

Philips models with Google TV built in are a good choice.
Otherwise, TCL or Hisense with a streaming device.
