Best Colour Laser Printer with Scanner

Do you have any recommendations on a colour laser printer with scanner? I want a printer for home which can print black and white and colour pages and also have a scanner. No other special features required.

Thank you.

Do you have any recommendations on a colour laser printer with scanner?

I recommend getting an ecotank and not a laser.

    • Thank you jv. Can you recommend one model?

I have the ET-5150, but it depends what features you are after, so just have a look at which one best suits your needs…

        https://www.epson.com.au/ecotank/

I get through thousands of pages on a bottle of ink (around $20-$30 per colour).

Also, with Black friday coming, keep an eye out for deals…

I got mine through the Good Guys ebay store and saved 22% using an ebay code on a new printer and did click & collect.

Also, don't forget to register with Epson after you buy. I got extra warranty and a free voucher to use at their online store for consumables (ink and/or paper)

Do the heads still clog up when not used for a while?

      • +1

        yes…

I'd do a test print each week if not in use…

Do a regular nozzle check and clean if necessary…

We use ours almost daily so not an issue.

Cheers, got a laser here but it only gets used a few times a year.

          • +1

            @EightImmortals: Depends what you need…

I prefer the inkjet as you can print quite good photos on photo paper when needed.

            • +1

@jv: True, no such requirement around here though. :)

I do a test print on the 1st of every month, and that has been sufficient.

And because the ink is so cheap it costs effectively nothing to do, unlike printers that use cartridges.

Are you printing out OzBargain screenshots?

    • I second this.

Is it true that the ecotank doesn't have an issue with print heads drying out if not used frequently?
I've been planning on moving to a laser because of this. Never heard of ecotank, but you have my attention.

just look on facebook marketplace for a suitable machine.

i recently bought a Brother Colour Laser Printer HL - L3230CDW - though it didn't have a scan bed, but a scan feed.

it was $30 . needed a black toner which was $22 off ebay.

    $52 all up.

    • A potential problem with second hand laser printers could be the drum or other wearable parts also needing replacement.

    • Thank you.

The large Brother beast that wiped their chips has finally got their code cracked.

Both Ebay and Ali sell them, the are costly but work.

Nothing beats laser for volume and large print coverage.

    • I was wondering why I couldn't reset the low toner warning with my latest Brother like I could earlier.

Is this related to what you're saying?

        Thank you.

        • Got a set for the HL-L3230cdw today:
I got 2 machines and on both the firmware came in despite being turned off in the menu. After that the no toner message will not go away.
Care must be taken to match colors, kmcy.
Could just slide them out with small plyers and slide them in except the magenta is weird.
Machine 1 is now alive with magenta being imperfect.

I also got a free Brother mono MFC-L2730dw. Here the new chip does no longer need a battery. Actually I picked it up as faulty and when home it worked a couple of months till no toner message spewed at 3rd party supplies. The naked new chip goes like a marvel.

I've had 3 Brother laser printers now. All of them worked flawlessly. Avoid inkjets at all cost.

Get a Brother colour mult-function laser and stock up on cheap toners from Protoner Warehouse. Never had a problem with their toner and its very economical.

    • Thank you.

    • Avoid inkjets at all cost.

I've never had a problem with any inkjet I've owned.
Only issues I've had is with my laser printers.

      • +1

I've had issues with every inkjet I've owned. If you don't print regularly, you stuff the print head.I use most ink, and time, and paper, trying to clean print heads.

I've had a gutful.I came here to see if there is a colour laser that can do a decent job on photos.

However, you have me intrigued with the ecotank. Am I being conned again, or can they go months without printing, then by fine when I need it?

        • I wouldn’t leave them for months. Just do a nozzle check print each week. Takes about 15 seconds

          • +1

@jv: The only reason to be using an inkjet is for photos and borderless printing. As far as I'm concerned just take them all straight to landfill.

          • @jv: ah okay. Yeah every new printer I promise myself I'll print something every week, and every time I fail within a month.

okay I'm convinced. I'll never buy another inkjet.

I totally acknowledge they are vastly superior for photo printing. But working when I need it is far more important to me. I'll get the laser that does the best job with photos (and if I actually need to print photos I'll outsource that.)

          • +1

@jv: Have you tried remote printing? According to Epson that is possible, so could be a solution if no-one available to do a regular print?

            • +1

              @bbinc: yes, often

      • Only problem I ever had with my car and most possessions in Melbourne that they had suddenly become invisible.

Vic cops telling me: Absolutely normal in your suburb!

        • Which suburb? and what does it have to do with printers?

          • @jv: In FNQ crime is still at record heights. So the 30kg monster is safer then the light tank stuff that farkbook moves so fast…

  • A short while ago I got a Brother MFC-L8390CDW on sale at office works. It's pretty great. I don't have high needs. I previously had a 22 year old Epson laser printer that was still going (barely) on its starter toner cartridge. But I have 3 kids now so I wanted laser, colour, two sided printing and two sided scanning with bed and feeder. No regrets. Image quality is great. Easy to use. Has all the features. And being laser I bet it will last forever.

    • Thank you.

    • And being laser I bet it will last forever.

My Epson laser died the first time I used third party toners.

Unless you're printing every few days, forget inkjet, the nozzles clog and you'll spend half you life stuffing around with it.

I bought this Brother two years ago. Sits for months, hit the button and it prints spot on every time. Got a huge amount of pages put of the "demo" cartridges before buying a set of high-yield.

Android phones print to it wirelessly (haven't tested Apple). Scanner is good quality, and the document feeder holds a good number of sheets. Inbuild duplexing for saving paper.

  • We got an HP Color LaserJet MFP M377dw some 5 years ago.

Always using original HP supplies (toner). Never a problem whatsoever.

Scanner light replaced about a month ago (… after ~5 years of scanning …)

    Overall very pleased.

    • what's it like for printing photos?

I know it won't be inkjet quality, but is it reasonable?
I figure I can get officeworks or whoever to print photos if I need to frame them, I just want a printer good enough for daily use.

It'd be fine for printing flyers right?

If you're needing a scanner and tend to do double sided scans, get one with a duplex scanner to save your time and sanity. You'll thank me later!
