Welding Question for Fence Recently Installed

Hi all, I had a gate recently installed but notice the welding on top is showing. Please see the photos:

Anyone know if this is unavoidable or expected? Don't want to create too much of an issue but I noticed the side and bottom welds are perfect

Should I complain about this?
What recourse do I have to complain?
Haven't paid them completely only did half

The price was $5000 for the whole gate automatic swing brushless gates and install.

    Depends what you paid.

Was it a $50 weld or a $1000 welding job

    • I paid 5000 for the whole gate automatic swing brushless gates and install

  • Anyone know if this is unavoidable or expected?

Both…. unavoidable if they took care in the weld, expected if they rushed it.

    bro thats one ugly gate

    • +5

      Money can't buy taste.

      • +5

No. It looks bad without any help from the welds.

Who is going to notice the welds on a gate that looks like that?

Sorry, OP, but the responses you get when you complain about anything on OzBargain are what people are going to be saying behind your back. That's the beauty of the anonymous internet.

    • agree. i honestly don't know what to make of it. such as bad design choice

  • +3

    Yuck that gate looks terrible

  • Uncle Ian reckons putting gloss paint on that is like highlighting your mistakes in highlighter pen. That’s why he only uses matte paint and flap-disc engineering, one of minute welding = three of minutes grinding it pretty.

  • +2

if anything the crappy welding makes the gate look less hideous

  • +1

I think the weld splatter is the least of the issues here.

    • +4

How did he get spatter on the side that has no welds, that's what I want to know.

  • I would have spent the $5k on updating the fence.

  • +1

Your problem is picking that design of the gate, could be done better but how much are you willing to spend, qualified welders can do better job than that but they're not earning enough to do such job.

  • honestly i dont know what is a good or a bad price with a gate.

There are a few issues with the production.

    1. The dots on the surface are called weld splatter. Usually you spray an anti splatter material or grind it off.
    2. the buldges are caused by welding a thin surface to a thick surface.
    3. The real crime here is that top edge and the merging of the 2 panels

I'm not an expert by any means. I'll hold my opinion on the design because that isn't the question. I think you could ask them to come back and tidy it up before you pay the rest.

The top looks terrible and they should come up with a fix for that.

Don't make a big fuss but they provided a service and as part of that service the customer should be happy with the service. Maybe the apprentice did it, maybe the guy was trying to rush a bit too much and didn't look at it properly. These things happen. If they are professionals they'll come back and sort it out.

    • -1

true perhaps the apprentice- but then he should be supervised after 1 or 2 welds- oh hey maybe i should show you - the bottom welds were perfect. also babe was cute not ugly :)

  • Complaining about the welds on a gate this ugly is like someone with a head like a smashed pie complaining that their fake eyelashes don't look right…

It's a gate, not a car panel. This is pretty normal on the thickness of metal you had the gate made out of. I would leave them there if it takes your focus off how ugly the rest of that gate is.

    • -5

up to you dont hate- some ppl like gate designs and some dont . dont waste your time posting

      • +1

Lol… Yeah, ok, champ. So, of all the people that said your gates look unattractive, you bypassed all of them just to get to mine. Well, since you want to engage me…

The gate looks like you spent $4990 on the opener and about $9 on labour and $1 on design.

The welding penetration on the metal face of the gate is mostly due to the welder being set to high and burning through. This tells me that the person who welded it wasnt very experienced or they used cheap arse sheet metal.

The panels in the gate doesn't even look like they spent any time butting them up correctly and then hit them with 2 seconds on the 9" grinder.

If you paid $5000 for this gate, then they saw you coming and I can only assume that the rest of the parts and work they did is of the same level of skill applied to the design and manufacture of this abomination.

It stands testament to your post that you are focused on the wrong thing when half the replies are "Christ, for $5000, that is one ugly gate" and you are focused on a few heat warps from poor welding. It's like owning a pig and complaining that they put the wrong shade of lipstick on it.

        • -4

i dunno but overall your comment was useful. Thanks mate. also babe was cute not ugly . :)

          • +1

@lilyesp: Cute only when you don't want to play with its shit. Same problem as your gate, picking a crappy design to begin with. Fencing contractors are no welder.

          • +1

            @lilyesp:

            also babe was cute

            And tasty.

    • +1

perhaps you could show us other gates that have been welded so poorly?

Most people would butt joint the steel sheet with the horizontal post behind.

  • +2

Just get a FBH and beat the sh!t out of the gate. It will look much better.

  • +1

The price was $5000 for the whole gate

Ouch. If you're going to spend that much, at least get something that looks a bit better (ignoring the splatter). And why oh why would you choose that grotty povo pub grey for the colour?

  • +1

    Welds are as expected.
Sheet metal especially will warp as it is heated during the welding process distorting the area around the weld.

If you want to FIX it… you either have to fill it with automotive bondo and repaint but this will also be visible as you will not get same finish unless you prep and paint the whole panel.

You can also hide it by gluing on a small decorative shapes like a medieval square/pyramid

  • The price was $5000 for the whole gate automatic swing brushless gates and install.

With that total cost, I am having trouble believing they gave you a brushless motor.
What's the brand and model number?

    • I can see the metal plaque which reads: "ROGER TECHNOLOGY".
So, it is brushless DC and 100% duty cycle.

  • OP, you do realise that that there is a massive gap between your boundary palings and the metal 100x100 post that the swing gate is attached to?
    WTF!?

    • massive gap

Only maybe a kid sideways or Plastic Man/Reed Richards can fit through that "massive" gap.

      • Whoever the metal fabricators / fencing company are they should crawl back to their hell hole and hang their head in shame.

  • I don’t mind the gate design. Except it needs to be far heavier steel with a rust patina instead of being painted.

  • OP, have you seen any other photos of that particular gate installed, and do those photographs exhibit those same markings?

    • Yeh no markings at all sadly

      • If it's not too much trouble, could you please link to a Google image that looks a bit like what your gate does? Can't see your pics clearly and despite the general negativity, I'm really interested. I'm thinking that it sounds pretty good when it looks like how it's supposed to.

      • Did the vendor organise the installers, or did you? Obviously, I'm after whether elements of the installation were misrepresented.

        • All welded and installed by same ppl. .

  • Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the camel.

I bet the OP is glad that he didn't ask if anybody liked his gate.

OP => I'm on mobile device, picture only looks like half gate at top of screen and big white patch of nothingness everywhere else.

What this means is either your pic is too small for me or there's a bunch of other activity interfering with what I can see.

Therefore, I can't tell what your gate really looks like, but if you were going for a rustic type urban look, apparently it's pretty popular.

Years ago my parents got some custom made twisty vine looking thing with leaves etc made from copper and brass. About 2 feet square each. Used as decorative inserts at regular intervals along dad's 30 foot long wooden bar. Incredible looking at the time, but PIA if wearing stockings whilst sitting on stool at bar.

Had a massive feature wall of metal stuff on the brick wall beside the fire place and a smaller one as screen for fireplace too.

When the Tenterfield Saddler still had his store, he had a fair bit of that sort of forged metal items and decorations too, mainly utilising horse tack and shoes and incorporating those into custom display pieces.

Did a fair bit of pressed tin as well, not just the leather and hide work.

    • Do you have a photo
