Fosi Audio BT30D PRO Bluetooth 5.0 Class D 2.1 Amplifier $79.89 ($78.01 eBay Plus) Delivered @ Fosi Audio eBay

Fosi gear seems to get a fair bit of stick on OzB and not just because of the Fosi reps, there's always a lot of sniping about real world wattage and whatnot.

What I can tell you is the Texas Instruments TPA3255 chip powering this unit is regarded as a watershed in audio quality and efficiency. This is an upgrade on the previous non pro version.

There are issues re bluetooth being unprotected which means if the unit is on and you do not have a bluetooth device connected anyone can connect via bluetooth and the unit'll switch away from rca and give over to your interloper. The solution is to remove the bluetooth aerial or just switch the unit off when you're not using it I guess.

Plenty of reviews around of units powered by this TI chip

Excludes QLD Far North, WA Remote

I'd guess the voucher'd expire tomorrow

I'll be grabbing one of the many unused quality wireless subs off marketplace for $10 or so and bypassing the inbuilt amp to make use of the sub feature on this unit

  • Thanks @alvian

    • the dac is part of the bluetooth soc ats2853 specs in english past the chinese summary

      · Built-in stereo 24-bit input sigma-delta DACs, SNR (A-Weighting)>=100dB, THD+N <= -85dB@0dBFS output amplitude
      · DAC supports sample rate of 8k/11.025k /12k/16k/22.05k/24k/32k/44.1k/48k/88.2k/96kHz

      pretty minimal specs

Aww man, I just got mine from Amazon a month ago for $109!

    • +1

soz, i've been holding out and it randomly paid off

$109 for this kind of performance's pretty good value!

      • +1

thanks for sharing i grabbed a v3 48v for my bookshelfs with that 15% off code, hope im happy.

        • +1

reviews i've read of the v3 are impressive

  • Wow, thats a lot of amp for 78bux. Which 2.1 speakers do you recommend connecting?

    • I'm putting things together piecemeal so using an existing set of bookshelf that do a reasonable job of high/mid with a good dac.

for sub there're a ton of pretty decent wireless subs that folks're selling off from a soundbar, you can bypass the inbuilt amp/receiver and power it off the Fosi for a cheap unit with a decent driver/enclosure for next to nothing

  • Good price for a 2.1 amplifier.
Are passive subwoofers still a thing though? And that enormous external antenna makes it look dated.

The solution is to remove the bluetooth aerial

A good chance it still works in the same room.

    • +1

good chance it still works in the same room

the stream is coming from INSIDE the house!!

You can build a passive unit from salvaged sub with a burnt out amp or from an unwanted wireless unit

    • +1

Or rotate it 90 degrees so it's behind the unit.

  • +1

These are very good little units. Highly recommend. Have a non-BT version (regret not ponying up the extra $$$ for BT) and it's excellent.

  • Keeping in mind the power supply here is 32v 5a so the actual power is probably a lot lower than the max capacity, descriptions says 50 Watt x2 +100 Watt but math don't check out. Does that mean if you just have a 2.0 then it will give 80w x2? Don't know.

If you see them selling a more expensive version I'd assume that's with the beefy power supply.

    • Fosi reps are pretty active on audiosciencereview forum, they claim this particular unit can't handle the beefier powersupply that's offered with other models

if you don't need the sub feature there are other models you can pair with the 48v powersupply like tjea is upstairs there

      • Ah that's interesting, then what is required to achieve their claimed 165W x2 + 350W?
The highest rated I ever saw they have was 48v 10a from v3 mono

        • I think they are pretty loose with their claimed outputs and this unit is a little weaker than the TB10D, even with 32V

I'm not much of a spec freak but there's a fair bit of discussion on these subjects on audiosciencereview

Bought this a year ago and paid about $10 more.

We bought this house a couple of years ago and it has in-ceiling speakers and a passive sub in the wall, so this worked out well to run Plex and another music player through the TV.

I initially used the Bluetooth, but that just wasn’t as sharp as the optical connection from the TV. Plus there is always a lag with Bluetooth, so the soundtrack was out of sync.

    • Yeah I don't expect much from the BT DAC but wireless with video's almost always a bad idea

  • +1

Wish Fosi had remotes for their units. Had to look elsewhere as current Fosi is in drawer unused as got fed up having to get up to adjust volume.

    • I think models with remote are in the pipeline. i'll be using it with a pi hat dac so can control volume from the lappie/phone but a lot of folks've been requesting a remote feature

should be able to control volume with a phone over bluetooth tho

  • Do these make a loud noise or pop when bluetooth connects??

    • +1

what i've read on the bluetooth is no, no pop just a soft chime to indicate connection

should probly add tho if you use android then you only get sbc for audio

      • +2

I have the Fosi BT20A and no pops, more a soft ping when connecting as a notification. Decent Amps except the lack of a remote.

      • +1

        TY

      • What do you suggest? APTX? Thanks.

        • +1

i think aptx is marginally better than sbc though from what i understand it was more about connection stability it its first iteration

if you have high quality files (especially if they're lossless) then you might be best off using something with some version of shareplay via wifi which allows for lossless streaming

i use a raspberry pi for this but i think you can get amps with this feature integrated

the upshot though is this unit has only sbc or aac - if you have apple gear that's good but if you use android you might be better off with something else (unless you know how to mod your android unit to use aac)

having said all that, fosi don't list what dac chip they use in their bluetooth receiver so it may not give you very good audio over bluetooth regardless. it's a bit of a rabbithole in some ways to use bluetooth on gear like this

          • +1

@0jay: Thanks mate. That's very useful info! I didn't know about the differences in bluetooth implementation between the Apple and Android.

  • I have a pretty old Onkyo TX-SR343 powering 2 Dali Concept 6 speakers and powered sub. I only use it for PC audio. It's quite bulky and seems overkill. Would this little Fosi unit be a good replacement?

    • i reckon it'd be perfect for that use, yeah

    • Buy the aiyima a07 with a 48v power supply, you won’t be disappointed especially have the bass and treble adjustments. You don’t need a power sub out so go for more power.

    Oos

I have one of these from a different brand, looks identical the brand is "Tilear", plugged into some high end PSB floor speakers. The sound quality is incredible.

  • Anyone recommend a good DAC with headphones out to pair with this?

Inputs for the DAC will primarily be my PC. Headphones are BD DT990 edition for reference.

Planning to run the BT30D pro with Klipsch passive bookshelves and powered sub.

    • +1

the dac i'll put aside for a second but for powered subs (which you can easily use wi this unit through the pre out socket) you might be better off with something else tbh

the sub adjustments on this unit will be bypassed using the preout for a powered sub

      • Thanks 0jay. Any recommendations?

    • I was thinking of the Fosi K5 Pro Gaming DAC.

      • +1

to be honest i'm a little bit weirded out that they don't specify the chip, only the frequency and sample rate. it might be fine but for something like this i'd want a bit more information if it were me

i wouldn't worry too much about pulling the trigger on this voucher btw, there's sure to be another sale on that'll give you time to do some research if you feel like you want to

otherwise i'm not that well informed. mine has a texas instruments pcm5122 dac chip (32bit/384khz) which tho not top of the line is plenty good enough for my ears and i'm really happy with it

        • +1

          Thanks man, appreciate the info!

I thought they did, the image shows that it has dual TPA3255 TI chips. And the K5 is running the NE5532 TI chip (24/192) Not that I know much about chips and specs that much.

I just want to start cheaper and then see how I go before I get too crazy (which I am prone to doing haha).

          • +1

@RossRoss: Dude, depends on your ears. If you are getting old, then you can use crappy gear and not hear it. :)

            • @Naigrabzo: LOL fair call. Nope, not old enough yet for crappy gear!

          • +1

@RossRoss: those 2 chips mentioned are amp circuits, the dac sample rate & freq are mentioned but no part number

I bought a cheapass bose 2 dual cube with a passive woofer for 80 bucks or so. I listen to old music a fair bit so the sound felt right.
Realized need a amp as its not a powered set, but will grab power from amp.
Went with this. Sounds great, plenty if bass with a klipsch set I have tried once, but this is paired to my bose as ling as I am alive.
If anyone has anything to say against bose, mind u, the only reason I brought it up is because I have a 200 aud audio system that I am so happy with.
