  • 573g of sugar - nice!!

Never knew it came in this size - never seen it at the supermarket.

Woolies has been selling 1kg packs but nothing this big.

    • +5

This is the old sizing from last year. Now 1.3kg -> 1.0kg.

The new packs contain 23% less diabetes at a higher price.

      • +6

Which points out the actual cost of living hit and the bs of low inflation numbers, you get 1/4 less and the price goes up, these are massive changes.

        • +2

I don't think I've ever seen anyone judge the cost of living by the price of snakes lollies before…

          • +5

@brotherfranciz: It is representative of the greater underlying problems, wholesale sugar prices have gone down. But things keep rapidly going up well beyond the reported numbers. This phenomenon is not limited to lollies.

        • In case no one has noticed, there is effectively a duopoloy in the supermarket industry in Australia.

All the players outside of the Colesworth duopoly look at them and generally think "if they can get away with those prices, why shouldn't we charge those price?".

Aldi sometimes answers that question with "well, we need to charge a little less for some things to get customers in the door" so that helps alleviate the duopoly power, but this is only a minor effect on prices overall, because its only for specific products they stock (staples and generics mostly); and it has even less impact in TAS, NT or WA, or any areas where Aldi doesn't have a presence.

Costco has a similar effect as Aldi, but it's an even lesser effect on prices overall considering how few locations they have.

IGA could be a force to alleviate the duopoly power, but they are generally the same or worse for most prices, unless it's one of the larger shops (e.g. Supa IGA format). Your typical smaller IGA leans into the convenience store pricing model. So IGA doesn't have much effect on diluting the duopoly power.

Just a heads up the 1.3kg bags were reduced to 1kg a while back (I've been stung with this). When I contacted Amazon to complain, they required the product to be returned for a refund. I just ate them and don't buy them anymore

    • So, you ordered this 1.3kg bag and received the 1kg bag?

      • +4

Yes. Allen's have updated most of their listing to 1kg, but missed a few

        • Weird. They've got two listings for the snakes (1kg @ $11.57, 1.3kg @ $12.11).

So, if they do have 1.3kg bags will the best before not be the best?

How the heck does something that's nearly pure sugar have a TWO star health rating?

    • +4

1-star for vegetable carbon and 1-star for the plastic packaging = 2 stars

Hmm, "The durability receives mixed feedback, with one customer noting they last a good couple of months while another mentions they don't last very long."

    • +2

First customer was single second customer had kids.

  • +2

    cheap long run carbs. Perfect

  • Cheaper at Aldi for a different brand of snakes.

    • I find these ones are horrible. Really is no comparison IMO

  • NO subscribe and save option. Bummer.
