Ever subscribe to something for $20 USD and get hit with $30+ on your bank statement?

It Just happened to me, so I spent a day building a free calculator that shows the real cost BEFORE you subscribe – including your bank's foreign transaction fees that automatically update and LIVE exchange rates. Works with all Aussie banks (CBA, Westpac, ANZ, NAB, ING, Up, Macquarie, etc.) below is Quick feedback survey Completely free, no ads, just trying to help people avoid surprise chargers!

Well, $20 USD is about $30 here. What’s the issue?

  • Yeah thats true, but how are you meant to know what the international fee is from the bank. not everyone knows exactly how much a subscription actual price is until you have paid for it and if its a renewing one what will be the end figure in AU dollars. this is just a little calculator to help people out that arnt up to speed with currency rates

People that are subscribing to non-essential services are not swayed by a ~3% fee. They’re not going to be using a paid third party site (as per survey) to calculate 3% of $30.

    • arnt up to speed with currency rates

I also like to spend in currencies I have no idea about

Your bank openly discloses any foreign exchange/transaction fees.

I would have thought all OBers, being so well educated in financial matters, are well aware and know where to find this.

  • Built in to spotlight on apple devices. Just add 3% if you bank with big 4.

    • im with android not sure if it does that, ive never seen it

Man used AI to code it fml

i sure did, ive got absolutley no idea about this stuff

        • It would be more accurate and accessible to ask ChatGPT about the “true cost” than use this stupid web app.

        • Maybe create a punctuation app.

  • Well this solves a whole raft of imaginary problems…

      LOL!

OP could simply use a card / bank that don't charge foreign fx fee. So many to choose from. Revolut, Up, UBank, CBA, etc.

bankwest offers no international fees. They have a transactiion account as well which is fee free.

Sometimes a purchase may be made on an Australian website and it is not apparent the charge will be processed by an overseas party. In this case your local bank will still charge a fee.
I doubt the calculator can allow for this exception.

Ever subscribe to something for $20 USD and get hit with $30+ on your bank statement?

$20 United States Dollar equals $30.59 Australian Dollar

Not sure what the issue is?

  • Just use a Wise debit pre-loaded debit card. Shows you exactly what you'll pay in your local currency, with a break down of exchange rates and fee, which I've found to be low.

    Dear Diary,
Until yesterday I didn't know the difference between US$ and AU$.
I was "slugged" with a once-off additional "unexpected" AU$10 charge.
So I spent the whole day doing unpaid labour to stop it happening next time.
    With all my love,

    Dear Diary,
    Update on yesterday.
Turns out I forgot that calculators exists.
A nice person on OzBargain reminded me and even shared links:

Did I waste a whole day reinventing the wheel?

Would you pay $3-5/month for premium features? *

    you're having a laugh right?

AI generated code, hard coded exchange rates, and your github page is a straight copy/paste of GPT output showing options on how to set it up.

Good job on spending some time mucking around with coding and ideas, but theres no way something like this is ever going to be a side hustle.

I kept my ubank account open because it doesn't charge a monthly fee and doesn't charge a fee for international transactions. That is its only purpose now.

I thought everyone just uses a Macquarie debit card or Wise virtual card… but maybe I hang out in a certain crowd.

  • You do now that there is a thing called "currency exchange rate", so $X AUD != $X USD

  • I just do this:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%2420+usd+to+aud

It obviously doesn't take into account the foreign exchange fees on the card though…

  • if you use your card, to pay for things outside the country. you get foreign fees (not a % usually but a once off processing fee, like $3 or something) every time.

    you didn't know that?

OP created account then an hour after went AWOL. Ghost account?

    • I thought it was just a dumb question.

but just noticed the two links now. pretty sus if you ask me.

      • I'd rather eat salt/dirt which is apparently good for me 😉

        • -2

those werent questions!! and I didn't link to anything claiming to reveal "the secrets".

you don't think the links are sus?

also are you going to keep believing the things that you were taught "are good for you" by the govinment when you were younger are actually good for you?

        • hey did you know table salt, is only 40% sodium!???

that's sounds weak af. I need me some 90% sodium salt. 💀

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Because salt is sodium chloride. I'm guessing the other 60% is chloride.

            • @MS Paint: oh makes sense.

whenever I was drinking the last drop of Shin ramyun soup on a cold evening I was always imagining all that juicy sodium I was absorbing. I thought that was equal to salt. turns out im wrong.
