  • Is it worth it?

    • If you fly at least twice a year then maybe yes. The discount I got on seat selection and luggage put me ahead from booking my first flight (international flight). If you do not take bags and do not ever pay extra for seat selection then maybe not worth it.

    • +1

Oh and if you are lucky to get a deal at the time you want to fly. I paid $88 being a member compared to $160 for a one way flight BNE to MEL.

I took nearly 10 different Jetstar flights over the past year. But this wouldn't have saved me money as I went carry on only and often got them cheaper anyway by using the price beat guarantee to beat whatever was the cheapest website from Skyscanner selling the same JQ flight.

      • How do you use price beat guarantee? Is that from JetStar?

      • How do you do the price beat?

Like if Aunt Betty, etc is cheaper, get Jetstar themselves to beat that price?

        • +1

Yes. It actually takes a bit of effort going through a webchat so arguably isn't worth it. But they need to honour their guarantee or else it's fraudulent false advertising. And this is OzB so perhaps any saving is worth the effort.

          • @inherentchoice:

And this is OzB so perhaps any saving is worth the effort.

Not true, because time is also a cost.

      • Used price beat once, unfortunately Virgins flights sold out prior to JQ actually looking at them, plus she said there was a 2hr difference between JQ and VA flight, so refused on that grounds too.

        • I am talking about beating third party reseller websites selling the exact same JQ flight for cheaper.

          • -1

@inherentchoice: Yeah and I'm talking about a third party reseller showing cheaper VA flights, so what's your problem??

            • @BatmanAU: If cheaper VA sells out then the exact JQ flight may still be cheaper on another website. In your case maybe it wasn't though.

  • What's the optimal # of flights per calendar year that makes this worth it? My partner and I like to travel domestically around 2-3 times a year on average, mostly to Melbourne, Tasmania or Mackay. We always fly Jetstar, with our expectations tempered, and there's never been any major issues. Would something like this save us more money in the long run?

    • +1

I had 1 sale return from Japan alone save me the $65. so i buy it every year now.

    • +3

It doesn't save you money on all the flights, but it does on baggage and seat selection. You can save money on 1 flight. I just buy it if it will save when purchasing a particular flight. It will tell you if you will save money from being a member, it isn't a secret.

    • What's the optimal # of flights

Depends on the cost of the flight. It can be as low as one.

  • so if i book a flight for two does the 20%off apply to both passengers or only the menber?

    • +3

      Both passengers

    • +3

Which 20% are you referring to, the 20% in this post is only for the membership and not the flight tickets I reckon.
apart from that, 20% off bags and seats* apply to all fellow travellers under your booking

    • +1

@hooray member discount applies to every ticket bought by the member for everyone.

    • reading it again the 20% savings for club jetstar members is for travel insurance at the time of booking not the flights

Well… Melbourne to Singapore flight was cancelled for 3 consecutive days. Are you sure you want to risk your holidays with Jetstar?

    • -1

They all have delays. Take your pick. Statistically the on-time margins are less than 5% difference across all the major players.

Don't fall for bullsh*t anecdotal experiences and negativity bias (i.e. you mostly see negative reviews of experiences because of negativity bias - majority of experiences are trouble-free/positive don't get posted about).

For mine, it's more about what the carrier does when a flight is cancelled.

This is just personal experience: over the years I've experienced day-of cancellations on all of Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas, all of which resulted in re-booking on services the next day. Virgin and Qantas both put me up in accommodation, but Jetstar didn't. Re-booking at the airport for Jetstar was also a huge hassle due to the relatively small number of staff to handle all the re-bookings. For Qantas and Jetstar it was the return leg of the journey (i.e. no option to just go home and come back the next day), so I ended up way out of pocket with Jetstar (due to having to pay for last minute accommodation myself) vs Qantas.

For Virgin, I once had a cancellation on a leg departing from my home airport. The flight they cancelled was meant to depart late at night, and the replacement departure was early in the morning - I mentioned that it would be a hassle to get home and back and they put me up at one of the airport hotels. I may have just gotten lucky with that one though.

        • -1

Again - see the comment below this - It's unfortunate that you had that experience but my original point still stands. Everyone will have their specific anecdotal experiences (hence your personal experiences) but as we know it, the experience is so varied across the board that all we can really stand on in the end is the statistical proof on which airlines are the most 'on-time'.

If there was a study done with enough participants on carrier cancellations and what was done to reparate customers I would be keen to see it.

        • Virgin and Qantas both put me up in accommodation, but Jetstar didn't.

I've only had once cancelled Jetstar flight recently and I was put up in a hotel. Anecdotes…

Re-booking at the airport for Jetstar was also a huge hassle

This will always be a hassle because no airline has hundreds of staff waiting around to deal with such things. 300 people all needing new flights right now is always going to hard.

    • +3

Newcastle - Brisbane - Cairns - Newcastle for $300 was definitely worth the risk.
Last year they held a flight open for 2hours waiting for fog to clear whilst Qantas and Virgin both cancelled their flights.

If it wasn't for Jetstar I probably wouldn't get to do all the trips I do.

  • If mine's lapsed I just join back up during my next booking and split the membership with others on the trip :)

Ive got it but i got a family of four it is 100% worth it for us

If you fly with baggage and/or seat selection it saves you a few bucks each way

I will say this Since Bonza and Rex have pretty much died (I know some parts of Rex still fly) i have found Virgin and Jetstar to have similar pricing so if you only fly once a year it might not be worth it as Virgin in some cases has been cheaper then Jetstar

We fly a few times a year so it isnt an issue but its worth noting you cant assume Jetstar is always 'cheapest' in fairness they usually 'are' but not always

I'm a full on budget traveller but Jetstar is proper shit, I don't mind delays here and there and even cancellations, domestically not bad, internationally crap, they wouldn't let me check in to Phuket last year coz they thought we weren't coming, they closed check in 30 minutes before closing time and obs I made a big deal so whole flight was delayed. The pilots were pissed at the staff and actually apologised to the three of us specifically on the plane for the ground staff making dumb decisions. If you look, there's always an alternative to Jetstar for the same price or cheaper. I booked to Japan $550++, same price to Japan on CZ. and unless you're travelling more than twice, and more than 1 person, with luggage and seat selection, this membership won't be worth it.

      Two reasons not much competition

      Second no accountability

Blame the fed government they should introduce laws that makes airlines pay for delays and reduce some red tape to open up the industry

MPs getting free upgrades for themselves and their families show they are brought off

      • Blame the fed government they should introduce laws that makes airlines pay for delays and reduce some red tape

Introduce more laws but also reduce laws? Which is it?

        • Reduce regulation to complete and enter the market

But hold those who do the wrong thing accountable

Its like driving the barrier to get a driver's licence is quite low but the punishment for speeding drink driving ect can be swift and penalising

Do you not understand basic principles of regulation?

Jetstar knowingly cancel flights not more then 70% full even if they dont have comparable service for the passengers on the flight cancelled

MPs shouldn't be getting bribes like our PM from the Qantas CEO for personal upgrades - that is called corruption but anyone voting for corruption MPs deserve the s—t sandwich Australia is becoming just look at Victoria

    • " If you look, there's always an alternative to Jetstar for the same price or cheaper."

      Generally not, no….

Does Scoot count? They're about the same price but with horrific layovers in Singapore so it would take about 25 hours to get to SE Asia - unacceptable to me as Singapore is a boring, expensive, waste of time shopping mall, not a destination.

    • +1

they wouldn't let me check in to Phuket last year coz they thought we weren't coming

Jetstar advise is to get to the airport 3 hours before your flight. You ignore that advice but it's still their fault? Is your name Karen?

If you look, there's always an alternative to Jetstar for the same price or cheaper.

No there isn't. eg Jetstar is the ONLY airline that flies direct Syd to Phuket so there is no cheaper option.

Jetstar are like the school all the kids that get expelled go… rubbish employees and terrible customer service probably from corporate pressures

  • very hard to find discounted rates and most of the time the discount doesnt even cover the membership fee unless your booking 4 flights a year where the discount applies to at least two of them

  • Anyone knows if I book reward tickets on Jetstar flights via qantas, does buying seat selection still get discount in Club Jetstar ?

    • I thought you got free seat selection if doing a reward booking via Qantas website on Jetstar metal?

Sorry, could be wrong on this tho.

      • Baggage and seat are included if booked via Qantas AFAIK

      • For jetstar flights book via qantas website (using frequent flyer points)
baggage are included but seat selection and meals are excluded
at least this is from my recent experience

        • Hmm fair enough. We just did Sydney-Phuket in August on classic rewards points, I'll check our booking and see what was included.

  • +1

Nothing would convince me to fly Jetstar again. Some examples are:
    - Groundcrew (in Melbourne) rude and belligerent;
    - Cabin crew are impatient and only interested in upselling.

  • Can you stack on to an existing subscription?

  • Am i reading it wrong or do you also get $50 credit for hotel bookings thru Jetstar ($150 min spends)?

  • would this speed up QFF points?

  • +1

You need to cancel the auto-renewal option, otherwise, you’ll be automatically charged after one year, and even if you cancel on the same day, they don’t give refunds according to their policy.
