  • Surprised this is for 750ml and not 10ml. EAD olive oil industry

I encourage people to read Cobram's investor presentations, then you'll see this brand has gone into full sales mode. Their products are not superior in any way, it's great marketing fluff they use to justify their greed. 'Strayan made' always has a nice ring to it.

      • +1

yeah when the European olive oil industry hit difficulties they doubled their prices to take advantage of it.

      • +3

Last I checked, it's still tested pretty well compared to the competition. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

  • Is there a normal olive oil from this brand? And not Extra Virgin or Virgin?

    • +10

Extra virgin is normal olive oil. Everything else that is heavily processed is not how olive oil is meant to be.

      • So you're saying either use Extra Virgin OO or dont bother with any other olive oils?? So what oil should i use for high heat cooking?

        • +4

          Peanut oil

        • +2

rice bran, peanut, quite a few options. There are light olive oils, is are processed and can take higher heat , but seems to defeat the purpose as cost more than peanut, sunflower or rice bran oil. People buy extra virgin OO for the flavour and hence pay the extra. I have used it for frying trick is have produce ready to add so it cools it down, never put in cold pan and heat up, into hot pan and quickly add produce.

Do not use olive oil for high heat cooking. Not only is it expensive and a waste of good product, you create different compounds at high heat.

Peanut oil I've found is the best for high heat / deep frying.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: i use rice bran or canola in my deep fryer, 4 litres of virgin olive oil would make for very expensive fish n chips. sautéing onions in a pan i use olive oil, just because i don’t keep many types of oil, deep fryer takes 4 litres, canola or rice bran comes in 4 litres so it’s one fill. Guess if you do a lot of wok frying you might go through high temp oil at a rate where it saves money to look at options. The amount i use for steaks olive oil is easier than multiple oils in pantry BUT i use a lot of butter 250gms per week 1 person household. Often fry steak in olive oil but finish with butter … yummmmm.

            • @garage sale: Did you find a place to buy cheap rice bran oil or peanut oil?
I found 2L bottles of canola oil in Aldi at a good price so bought them for the deep fryer.
Rice bran oil wasn't there in big bottles and was almost double the price per liter.

I use avacado oil for steak since I cook them at very high temps. Everytime I tried olive oil or butter, I ended up smoking them (I probably need to reduce the temp).

@coffeeinmyveins: This is actually a myth. Extra virgin olive oil can be used for frying. This is due to the oil being extracted physically rather than being extracted with solvent at high heat. The naturally occurring antioxidant actually prevents the evoo from breaking down during high heat. There are multiple journals confirming evoo being one of the most stable oil for cooking.

            The only downside: too expensive.

When using large amounts I tend to use extra virgin canola oil. Extracted physically but much cheaper when compared to evoo.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: Extra virgin olive oil actually has a fairly high smoke point, fine for most cooking needs. I use avocado oil for higher temperature stuff, the smoke point is higher than peanut oil and it's also better for you. But yes, even more expensive than olive oil.

        • supposedly ghee or lard. Vegetable oils convert to trans fats when cooked https://duckduckgo.com/?q=trans+fats

  • Is this any better than the Olive Tree brand from Aldi? Can’t say I’ve bought oil from colesworth since they lost the plot with pricing a couple years back when they took advantage of a very short term shortage due to bad harvests in Europe.

    • the cobram robust has stronger flavour than the aldi, else just buy aldi if not after a strong taste.

    • I've tried both. Minimal difference.

Aldi Olive Tree brand EVOO from Australia is a private label most likely sourced from Cobram Estate. Cobram grade their quality - the best are the premium single variety products, then the three Cobram Estate brands that are on special atm are their highest quality blended oils, then Red Island is the next best, then private label for supermarkets. All are cold pressed within a few hours of harvesting on site at their own mill. Olive oil tasting is a thing, as are the health benefits from the high levels of polyphenols.

    $20/ litre.
Remember when you could get a whole 3 litre tin for that? And have sixpence change for lemonade.

  • Which type of oil is best for stir frying?

    • Peanut, sunflower, rice bran, vegetable. I try to avoid canola as it can smell fishy

      • i use rice bran for stir frying, very neutral flavour and takes high heat well as is proven in how long it lasts in deep fryer.

  • Is this still the go to in terms of polyphenols?

    • No you need a cold pressed option ideally, $$$

  • +2

I remember $15 was the full price not too long ago.

    • +1

yeah, not sure why australian made olive oil prices have gone crazy, doubt it’s due to population growth and demand, probably more because imported oil has gone up in price due to droughts in europe and so they can charge more, not that it costs more to make. Cobram is a great product but price hike over last 3 years is above cpi and inflation.

      • both increased prices of imported and poor local production.

    • +1

the appeal for me of 1L bottles is i’m a single person household, so don’t go through large amounts, if i get 3L can it’s same problem as 1/2 drunken bottle of wine, oxidization, so 1L bottles handier when on special, also probably fresher than the last 500ml in the bottom of a can. Do they even do the robust version in 3L cans ?

  • Theres spanish extra Virgin oil 5L for 43bucks at costco. Get a bottle and put some in there and refill. This is $20 a litre :/ even on special

    • European vs australian, with the northern vs southern hemisphere seasons worth checking which is fresher, after the picking season, it sits in storage, so check when bottled and best by dates.

      • I think too many people are using this for cooking. It should be used for salads and making tzatziki or over dips and bread. Use butter or coconut oil as its good for high heat. Olive oil for cooking only good for really low heat and no one has patience thesedays

        • butter is as cheap as $14 kg, adds better flavour to fried food, i keep olive oil mainly for salads or added to warm dishes, once it gets hot it looses a lot of its aromatics if you use cobram robust. with the price hikes on cobram, if not on special use aldi.

        • +1

Not the case. Evoo is great for cooking. Being extracted physically means it won’t break down when subject to heat.

        • Used in middle eastern and italian cooking all the time mate. Your pasta you eat at an italian restaurant is Extra Virgin OO

High heat cookign is fine just not for prolonged periods. Go look at any pasta chef. They have smashing their pans with a big flame and olive oil
