HTC Velocity 4G $199 at Kmart

610

Stopped by Dicksmith Altona North to pick up the last HTC Velocity 4G for $199 ;), I bumped to the same phone with the same price at Kmart. Sorry couldn't take any picture because I left my phone in the car park and couldn't bother to fetch it in 35 degree Celsius sun. Not sure if the deal is on other Kmart store so you need to try it out!

Kmart site doesn't have the phone so I have to link the page from Dicksmith instead!

Update: From other OZB comments, looks like this deal is available at other Kmart store as well. And DSE is having new stock coming, finger cross! Happy OZB-ing!

  • this or N4?

    • +1

well I can say I just received my N4 and it's great. But best for you to have a look at both and see which one is best for you :)

    • +5

You could buy this and almost have enough left to buy a Nexus 7

    • +5

I'd personally get the Nexus 4, although it is almost double the price. It's far more future proofed and with a much bigger battery.

      • +1

        No 4g though.

        • I read somewhere that you can get 4G with the nexus 4 with some tinkering.

I don't know if this hack can apply to australia though, as I only have 3G. But if its true then at least it makes the N4 a little bit future proof.

        • The LTE chip in the n4 is not compatible with the band we use in Aus.

        • Uh. Nexus 4 has no LTE chip…. Yes? No?

        • It has a cellular chip which can work with one band of 4G but it's disabled. So technically yes, but it's unusable here because it's the wrong band

      • Does N4's GPS work with [Russian] Glosass satelites, as Note 2 & iPhone 5 do, just in case US GPS sat's go out?

  • Is this 900 or 850 3G?

    • 850 = Telstra NextG

      • Will this work on the Kogan network?

        • What network?

        • Kogan use Telstra's NextG network (well most of it) so if the phone supports UMTS 850 then yes

        • -1

Haha I got a HTC desire hd, it only runs on edge on kogans Telstra network, so I'm a bit nervious buying now

      • "Australia's fastest phone"; but will this hold for duplex(10 Mbit) consistently? ;)
        The Big Q.

The other test is how materially does the halving of wavelength affect reception into buildings, underground areas etc..though I expect it cannot go worse than w/ 2100.

      • Interesting data- http://www.cnet.com.au/4gs-slow-summer-339343232.htm

Graph showing 4G trending along w/ 10M…would it stay this way tho _ long term(?).

    • This is from Kmart…

      ???

      • -7

yeah i gathered.. but i suppose it's better to just update that thread instead of creating a new one since they're essentially the same deal

        ???

        • +7

I agree, but I suppose the argument could be made that (a) it's out of stock at some DSE stores and (b) people wouldn't see the other deal's update. Not that I necessarily think that justifies a new post, but… shrug

  • Saw that at Kmart - Casula but labeled Telstra , I think it is locked to Telstra

    • +1

yeah, it got the Telstra NextG label on the box, just identical to the one from DSE but not specifically said if it's locked or not

  • Just got it delivered from Dick Smith. Everything is good except for batteries. I'm on 60% batteries and it says estimated 1.5 hours til 0%.

      • Just tried that, it improved the number to 2 hours but will see how it goes after a few days.

        • +1

Yeah see how you go,you might find battery life is taking an extra hit because you keep playing with your new toy? worst case scenario you can get a higher capacity battery for it.

        • -7

That number is how long you have had your phone on battery, not how much battery is left. No phone estimates how much battery you have left.

        • I will kep that in mind when my iphone gets to "0% Battery Remaining" and switches off.

        • +1

I think he meant time remaining. Almost every phone will give a %, haven't seen many do time.

        • I was talking about his 1:30 figure that increased to 2 hours around half a hour later according to his post times. I own a HTC One X, they do not have a time remaining function, they have a time that shows you how long you have been without a charger, which is what the user who posted got confused with.

  • +1

There are all telstra branded but they aren't locked at all. At least mine wasn't. Using it with optus now. It had a telstra box. I think to be locked they usually have to come with a sim. No sim = no lock.

    • Can you please confirm that you bought yours from Kmart and that it is not locked? I called Kmart and they advised me that it is definitely locked to Telstra as it is a Telstra prepaid phone?

If you can confirm that was the one you purchased and it works with other networks, that would be great!

      • I know it has got the label for Telstra 4G, same mine but its unlocked but I bought from DSE.

      • I bought mine from dicksmith and it wasn't locked the box had some telstra stuff on it but it wasn't locked I would get the Kmart lacky to show you the box and if it dosent have a sim or actually say pre-paid on it I would give it a whirl. Fully just bring your sim down and pop it in straight away and return it if its locked… will need to put in the optus APN settings for data though. enjoy the benefits of buying from a big retailer. Shop Smart , shop S-mart. YOU GOT THAT!

      • Just picked one up from Kmart. I'm with Optus - will report back on how I go.

        • Ok, popped the Optus sim in and I can confirm it works - can make and receive calls.

Haven't stuffed around with VPN settings yet to get 3G sorted.

        • +1

Thanks! I got one from Kmart based on your confirmation. It does work with Optus. One more unit left at Kmart Brunswick ;)

Better to get from Kmart as they have paywave (if you have an OE) whereas DSE doesn't.

        • I am using Woolworths mobile which uses Optus network as well. I can make calls and receive calls but the internet is not working at all.
I have seted up the APN for optus but still not working
          http://ausdroid.net/apns/#optus

          Anyone experiences same problem?

        • Call optus. They will give you some sort of code to key into your HTC.

        • SMS ‘SET’ to 738 from your mobile phone
You’ll receive data settings that you need to save or activate to your handset
Switch your handset off then on again to activate MMS

          From here;
          http://optus.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/301/~/mms-…

  • +2

I have mine with optus. Yes the battery isn't the greatest but other than that I have to say that it is perfect. Especially give the cost.

    • How not perfect? Are we talking hours or days?

If it can go at least a day, then that's OK.

      • I am a heavy user (expecially of data based services) and It lasts a day

        • The other thing is tethering is far more reliable than my other phone (samsung s2)

        • That's pretty good. My iPhone 4S is starting to head in that direction anyway… And the wife's SGS1 is well below that!! Time for her to upgrade.

  • Keen to get one from KMart if it's unlocked. Anyone can share? Thx!

    • Works with Optus ;)

  • Got the last one from Dick Smith here at Hurstville. Also tried my luck but there was no room for bargain. Its unlocked but the pain is that now I cant use my Mobile internet coz my one is Vodafone still 3g. So thats the pain, battery life yes sucks but the hardware itself is solid. Anyways I can use my mobile internet from this device? suggestion required thanks

  • I can confirm it comes unlocked from Dicksmith for the same price.

    • Pity no dicksmiths in victoria has any stock. It says on the DSE site unlocked anyway. I assume people want to confirm if the kmart phones are unlocked since they might have stock left (like me).

      • I bought 2 in Vic today, the online stock thing may not be correct.

Try ringing around, they might even put things aside if you ask nicely.

May be I should wait for NEXUS 4 to come down $250.I just bought MOT RAZR V 3 weeks ago :(

Anyone with speeds to clock Telstra's newG
…any shiny reports from _ ipad starter chip ?

  • christ a Qualcomm dual core 1.5ghz mobile chip for less than $200 on a phone, that's amazing

man intel / amd better lookout, these guys will be coming to the pc game in a few years at this kind of price/performance combo

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_velocity_4g-4435.php has the specs for it, but will have to upgrade android which is better to do as you get it than after using it for a while to avoid having to backup, set app settings again etc etc

    • +1

      Qualcomm dual core 1.5ghz

It's only a 2.5y/o Snapdragon S3, nothing to get terribly excited about. The clock speed doesn't really mean much at all.

man intel / amd better lookout, these guys will be coming to the pc game in a few years at this kind of price/performance combo

AMD, a long-established CPU developer, can barely compete with Intel as it is. Considering Qualcomm only has a history with non-comparable ARM SoC's, they would have to pull off some very impressive x86 chips to succeed… and even then, it's quite a stretch.

I highly doubt Qualcomm would even bother… the costs alone for branching into x86 chip fabrication would be enormous.

  • Thanks - just got one from my local Dick Smith!

  • Thanks OP. Broke my HTC sensation the other day this is an easy replacement.

    • No problem,that'd be a slight upgrade.

  • Reposting from the other thread.

I reserved a couple from one of the DSE stores yesterday morning (after confirming they had 3 in stock) and got a call late arvo advising that they made a mistake and that there is only 1 left for me.

Anyway, the lady then told me that I can place an order by paying a 10% deposit as they have 1600 units arriving at head office on 11/2 (Mon) which will then be distributed amongst the stores (Eta Friday).

So, for those who missed out, do not despair as there will be more/ another chance to get it.

    Good luck! :)

Btw, I went to collect the one unit reserved for me and have been toying with it. So far, so good! :)

    • I did the same thing. Went to DSE chadstone and they say they can order one for me if i pay 10%. I am expecting a call next tuesday.
      Really cant wait

  • Just picked this up from Boronia Kmart, they've got at least 4 left, excellent price.

  • I would have jumped on this if it was Optusable (it is so a word, I made it up using letters, didn't I?)

I missed out on the recent $246 Razr V deal at JB because I hadn't yet figured out what size & features I needed. I won't make the same mistake again, I'm checking this site daily and I'm ready to pounce on the next good phone deal at a B&M store.

    • +2

Bought mine at Kmart and using Optus with it.

      • +1

Specifically, I meant Optus 3G in country areas. Can't do it.

  • Anyone bought extra Velocity phone in Melbourne? I am after one but its sold out now.

    • +1

Just bought one yesterday (6:30 - 7:00pm-ish) at DSE Sunshine. They still had 3 in stock despite the Online stock was nill. You could ring them and check out if there are any left.

btw, the phone was unlocked and Optus sim worked fine.

  • FYI Bondi Junction has none

  • Chatswood has none AFAIK

  • I bought the last two at Kmart Indro

  • Did you have to fill the telstra prepaid form at kmart? I tried to buy one but they want me to fill the form

    • +1

Yeah, it doesn't bother me that much. From my understanding those forms basically register your name to that handset (if it is used in any criminal activities), if I sell either at a later date I will record the IMEI on the eBay listing as proof that the phone is no longer mine.

I think you are correct though, they shouldn't NEED you to fill the form out as it isn't a pre-paid handset… but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.

      • +1

Uhh.. That is only if you're signing up for a SIM as well. These phones are SIM-less, and require no such form.

        Typical retail edumacation.

  • Bought one from DSE camberwell.now need to find screen protector and case…thanks op

  • Also to reconfirm anyone's suspicions, tested one that I purchased from Kmart with a friends Vodafone sim with no problems.

Kmart let me use Paypass 4 times (twice per invoice) for the two phones I bought… Bring on the ING rebates :-).

  • Any availability in-store (specific) / online in Sydney?

      THANKS FOR TELLING US ;)

  • Just bought one. 2 left at dandenong kmart

    • I can also confirm it's unlocked, working with Red Bull Mobile (Vodafone) sim

  • Does anyone know what sim size the HTC Velocity uses?
Is it a standard sim size?

    • Standard sim

  • Has anybody spotted anywhere with the phones still in stock?

  • Picked the last two up from Chadstone Kmart (VIC).

I can confirm that its unlocked, service is working with a Virgin SIM - this is the phone the sales assistant reminded me is exclusively locked to Telstra.

Great phone, even better for the price.

  • there is still some in Kmart Campbellfield, I can confirm they work with my optus plan simcard without modifying anything…
    Cheers

  • spotted one today at Kmart Greensborough (Vic)

I'm super keen but missed out. Would happily buy it off you.
