Can another audiophile give me their opinion: Is the FiiO 17 Amp worth it for earphones? Or is any other portable amp worth buying?

I'm asking because I bought a pair of Westone 3s that came with a FiiO E6. When I used it the sound was different but… not sure if the tone was any better than before. I know sound is a matter of subjective taste, but in general what desirable qualities are portable amps aiming to produce considering earphones don't need to be 'driven' powerwise?

Not really for IEM's from what I read. as a DAC, sure. I have one on the way to drive DT770 80ohm cans

    • I have the Fiio E6 (if I recall the model correctly) which is paired with a Sansa clip. Sound is awesome - it does thave 4 modes of operatrion in this model - Neutral, 2 bass boost settings and the thirs one seems to lower the volume a bit.

Now to your point, I don't see why you would need an amp to drive the Westone 3s. It should generally perform well with any decent portable music player. I use a Cowon X7 and it powers my Westone 4Rs just fine (this is one of my best IEMs….I also own a Sennheiser IE8 and a Sennheiser IE80 both of which work fine without amplification).

The EQ in the Cowon X7 is simply sensational to say the least and it's easy to customise or swap to a preset EQ setting, negating the need for an amp when using one of my IEMs.

The E6 on the other hand significantly improves the sound on the Sansa clip which has crap EQ and I genenrall have to use the custom setting when listening to music without the E6 attached to it.

I aim for clarity and balance in the sound as much as I can manage but am partial to some bass being added as long as it isn't muddled or overpowering the other frequencies.

      just my 2 cents….

Depends on the headphones - the Westone 3's generally don't need amping - not many IEMs do as they tend not to be particularly power hungry. Big closed back or over ear phones can generally benefit from amping, and some are almost unlistenable without amping (I'm looking at you AKG Q701). The E6 is a decent little amp though. Keep it around.

    • The Q701's are open, you wouldn't use them as portable headphones anyway.

      • Doesn't necessarily mean you wouldn't run them straight from a portable source at home.

    • The E6 is a decent little amp though. Keep it around.

Lol, a bit too little… I think I lost it already.

  • Think R1's have better sound and are not "on sale"

  • I don't see the Fiio offer anywhere on their site. I'm logged in. Did I miss something?

EDIT: Its not listed, but there when you click through…

  • I was going to buy the M5s, but it doesn't seem to apply the discount at the checkout. This deal doesn't seem to be ON.

    • You have to select the extra set of headphones as the free bonus

      • aaaah, I see. cheers.
