Oricom 2watt Handset @ Repco Now $35.00 (PMR780RD)

80

These are a great little handset for the price, usually priced at about $46.00 on ebay. This is the cheapest I've seen them.

    never believe a Repco ad….

2 watt is going to give you maybe 500m line of sight if your lucky, they arent powerful at all.

    • seriously? it says on the unit "up to 3km range". Under what conditions will that occur? seems like false advertising if youre right.

      • -4

Yeah dead serious, ive got a big UHF 5w unit that gets that sort of range with LOS, no way a 2w unit will get that sort of distance and achieve an audible signal.

        • Big … 5w (watts)…?!?

Hams continue to enjoy up to 400 watts (PEP), and
can even apply for permission to use more than that.

PS While you wouldn't want to depend on a 2w UHF set, these 2w radios do OK - eg, at schools - to keep teachers in-touch with office or staff rooms, when supervising kidsduring recess or lunch periods.

        • HAMS are also licensed, for unlicensed users the maximum transmission output is 5w, hence why almost all UHF's commonly sold are either 5w or under that specification.

Not true. Even with 0.5 watt handsets, you can get 500m or more range if you have a clear line of sight. 2 watt handsets give you longer range. Obviously when there are any obstacles in between the handsets, the range will reduce.

      BULLDUST
a 0.5 watt is like that, a 2 watt is mainly limited by the fact its aerial is in the vehicle, so will likely only get a couple K on transmit on average terrain, and receive the 5 watters from about 8-10k away (again - limited by the little aerial in the metal vehicle)

      • a 2 watt is mainly limited by the fact its aerial is in the vehicle

Ummm - have you actually looked at what product this deal is about?

        • Indeed - unless Repco are contravening that ACL what i say stands for this handset.
That said - the thread of conversation is about 2 watt handhelds in general, not specifically this unit.

I AM more than a a little concerned that I cannot find confirmation of this 2 watt spec elsewhere (I have been trying since that post, but didn't want to say that prematurely):
SuperCheap have the same model # and photo listed as 0.5W.
3km (listed by Repco) is a common claim for 0.5w handsets.
Oricom do not list an output power for this unit, only 3k range, but do list power outputs for their other handhelds in the page titles (inc the UHF1280 2Watt)

I am left wondering if this is not indeed a 0.5watt unit advertised wrongly, which would perform in keeping with the comments about 0.5W units

        • Yes it is suspiciously cheap for an actual 2W unit. I suspect the "2W" in the repco ad refers to "2-way". Very misleading. Probably unintentional?

      • What band though? 477mhz (which is what is advertised, ie standard 40 channel UHF) degrades very quickly over distance, unlike the older 27mhz, i have no doubt that a .5w could do 3km on the 27mhz band, 477mhz speaking from personal experience with the same units listed in the OP wont.

        • On the old 27megger i would get 30-40k on a bad day, on a good day i would get hundreds of kilometers (using a simple omni aerial, an ~8ft steel pole).
As i said before - what you said is true for a simple 0.5 watter, just not for 2watt units as you stated.
If these WERE 2W units it would have been an awesome buy.

That said, on 2.4Ghz (which is even more 'line of sight' than 477MHz) last i heard the record was 75km on 0.4W, getting 20-30K with good aerials is not unusual.

  • Buy it, test it if it doesn't work return it back and say it doesn't do what its claimed to do, saying that you think it won't do 500m is literally just babble unless you have tried it.

  • I went to a Repco store and on the item tag it actually says 0.5W while in the catalogue it says 2w.

  • Yeah, its a 0.5w

I have 4 sets of those when they were '$10 if you spend $30' like 6 months ago.

They're great to use between cars on road trips. Thats about all the use ive found so far.
