Splashtop 2 - Remote Desktop (for iPad) - FREE

981

For the first time ever (according to AppShopper: http://appshopper.com/business/splashtop-remote-desktop), Splashtop Remote 2 is free. I bought it a couple of days ago when it went down to 99c, but it's now free. It works really well and is very fast. For those that don't know what it is, here's the blurb from iTunes:

Splashtop is the easiest and fastest way to access your Mac or Windows PC from your iPad! Over 12 million users are enjoying Splashtop apps today, and you should too!

Use Splashtop to access your computer on the local network, with the best-in-class video streaming performance, Microsoft Office Suite and PDF viewing and editing, full browser access with Flash / Java support (IE, Chrome, Firefox), playing 3D PC/MAC games, and access all your media library and documents.

  • Access all your programs and files with 100% compatibility, including PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Excel, Outlook, Quicken, IE, Chrome, Safari, and all other PC/Mac applications

  • Watch all the videos that are playable only on your computer, including Flash (Hulu, Youtube, etc.), DVDs, and Windows Media Player

  • Listen to the music library on your computer, whatever format it’s in (WMA, RealAudio, MP3, AAC, etc.)

  • Play all the 3D games (World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Skyrim, Diablo III, etc.) and all the Flash games (FarmVille, CityVille, etc.)

  • Enjoy the most vibrant experience with Apple Retina display support (when using native resolution)

Requirements on PC side:
* Install Splashtop Streamer on your PC (Windows 7, Vista, and XP), Mac (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion), or Linux (Ubuntu 12.04). Download for free from www.splashtop.com/streamer

Edit: Added PC Requirements

Very good apps can play video over it and if you connect it to a Win8 you can use the touch function.

The iPhone version is also free again

I prefer Team Viewer, I just wish they a consumer level so I didn’t have to deal with the pop up after you sign off.

Thanks! Looks like the iPhone version is also FREE

Anyone ever hear of VNC? VPN? RDP? Standard and free all the time :-P

    • +3

Have you ever try play video over VNC?

As mentioned, the performance of this means you can stream videos over it. I use it to watch TV on the iPad, streamed from a computer with Windows Media Center. (Which means I can take the TV wherever I want to go with the iPad - only downfall is that MC can't be full screen, but that's ok because you can zoom the app to whatever size is appropriate)

Ha - got the last free version of this and then they made it that you had to pay later on with the update to version 2.

Fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Appears to be free on Google Play as well..

Pretty sure its always been free on Android. It was when I installd it a few months back.

It is free, but when I try to connect to my PC, it asks for $1.99 per month for Anywhere pack.

      • +2

That is the same for the iOS version. Over local network = free. Anywhere access = $1.99/month

  • how does this compare to team viewer?

    • This is the big difference

"Watch all the videos that are playable only on your computer, including Flash (Hulu, Youtube, etc.), DVDs, and Windows Media Player"

I'm a regular Splashtop user but ever since I switched to Win8 on the PC, Splashtop constantly disconnects on the iPad and it's frequent when I'm watching a movie.

It's good for using your PC on bed but if you're lazy and prefer to lie on your bed/couch rather than sit on a chair to watch something on your comp, use AirVideo to stream.

    • I like using the splashtop 2 touch option on my Win8 laptop but the only problem is the 16:9 and 4:3 issue, doesn't look great on the iPad but touch works very well.

works great using it to type this comment :D

  • To access and unblock HULU.com and other overseas video streaming sites use Hola on the computer. The Chrome/Firefox extension and Hola window client is very easy to use and works well.

not the first time free… it was free when originally launched years ago… its developed a lot since then so they started charging for it… good deal if you haven't already got it obviously :)

    • I can confirm this.

  • Thanks for this - I installed it last night and it works great on my Ipad 2 with my Windows 7 desktop machine!

  • Nice find, thanks!

Maybe it's a good program, but when I try to connect to my PC, it asks for $1.99 per month for Anywhere pack. Gotta neg this.

    • For doing exactly what is says it does?
That would be an inappropriate Neg.
It costs less than it normally does, it doesn’t hide the fees for external usage in any way.
      So it is a bargain.

      • +1

Yeah, revoked my neg. Lack of sleep affected my little brain. After visiting site, I found the settings for using in 'Local Mode'

        Apologies for the previous neg.

  • Any one see Engine Connect app by the same company, costs $1,049.99!!! Gotta be one of the most expensive app?

  • -5

Subscription service now as opposed to a once off charge.
    $1.99 a month.
    Neg

    • +1

Dude, this is an old deal, why neg it now? especially when you're wrong. It's still free.
Over local network = free. Anywhere access = $1.99/month, as always.

      • -4

Used it today and saw it on the side of OZB
Didnt know it was on old deal.
        Neg for you

        • +1

Guess that's what I get for pointing out that you have negged something because you can't use it properly huh?

    • It's also possible to Report a deal as expired

Report is one of the options listed under the deal

      • Sure. Thing is. It's not expired… If you click the link you can see that it's still a free download, and free to use (over a local network). The $1.99/month cost that Ken_ZomgWtfBbq is the anywhere access that was never free and always $1.99/month.

He just doesn't understand what the original deal was for, it wasn't for the Anywhere access, as has been discussed in this thread already…

        • Oh, my apologies. Sorry about that. I've removed the expired from the deal. Sorry once again.
