  • Anyone know if you can add more weights to this set - by the looks of it you wouldn't be able to?

    • looking at the end, seems like screw kind,
putting extra weight (from the dumbells?) looks doable.

  • Are these sand filled or solid metal?

    • +2

looks like concrete encased in plastic

      • Pretty sure they are indeed concrete incased in plastic, the set i have from big dubya is concrete in plastic.

  • Not bad, anyone aware of any Big W offers at the moment? Such as $10 off x spend etc?

  • -1

Its a incredible good deal, I have been trying to buy this kind of set, second hand on ebay and prices are mental, 80 - 100 - 150 for rusted shit, lead weight at price of gold.

    • +8

I'd much rather plates with superficial rust than concrete filled plastic. If you are going to use them for anything more than a passing fad, then the density and durability issues become a big factor.

      • +2

Happens that I'm broke ass, so this one will have to do :(

        • +2

Plus statistically you'll buy them and make them an ornament, before you move them to the garage, before you get rid of them

        • +1

over 80% of statistics are made up

  • Are these 50kg per side?? Looks like it from da pic,,

    • +1

Looks like 50kg total…these are concrete encased weights so they look bigger than the ones youre probably used to seeing at the gym.

      for $60, i'm mighty tempted.

  • Oh how i wish i could have a set of dumbbells named after me sigh

    • +3

every set is named after me 'dumbbell'

    • +5

I don't think I'd buy an "Optus Fail" dumbbell set.

  • All we need is free shipping :-)

    • +2

Right… the postmen will build up their muscles doubly fast if this happens.

  • +6

Looks like exactly the same set as previously: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78662
Now just comes with a name and extra cost!

    • +2

Ugh, now I don't want to buy this anymore at their $11 more expensive price. :(

    • WHO IS GUY LEECH??

      • He is a surf ironman from the 80's and 90's who has been cashing in on his name ever since. Tried to take up triathlons in the 90's and that was a major fail "I dont have bike legs yet". Endorsed a shocker of a Repco road bike that was about the same quality as these dumbells.http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll304/guzzisti/lunapic_134560995226964_1.jpg
When he is in his 70's we are sure to see the Guy Leech Incontinence Pads

  • +1

It states "Every day low price"

  • 6 x 5kg

    4 x 2.5kg

    6 x 1.25kg

    =47.5kg

    not 50! lol

    2.5kg short!!

    • +3

The bars probably make up the other 2.5 Kg.
I own the set from this deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78662 and it's concrete in plastic.
It not perfect but very good value for money.

      • +1

the bars would need to be over 2.5 kg to hold the weight

      • 2.5kg…is the barbell made of bamboo?

    • +7

      do you even lift???

  • How were you able to purchase it today chadiwrx? Did you go in store or by online?

Also, is this deal available in melbourne?

    • Purchased in store. I can't find them online.

      • How did you carry it to the car (think about it!)? :)

        • +6

You got parcel pick up. Take your car to the back loading doors and we'll load it in the car for you.

I work at Big W. very depressing hahaha

        • +2

You could do what iOSYS said or you can do what I did load it up on a trolley & just lift it yourself into the boot of the car it's only 50kg. :p

        • It's only 50 kg.. lol

        • +11

          Do you even lift?

  • I'm guessing these are standard size, or are they olympic size.

    Could anyone confirm?

    Cheers.

    • not olympic size.

    • Bought a set like this 10 years ago (now rusty), bar was slightly shorter then normal gym bench press bar. I assume was to make it fit inside the plastic trolley case in comes in.

  • +13

    Do you guys even?

    • +3

I lifted the 50kg box on my own.

      • Did she like it?

  • +6

I have a much better way of lifting weight.
eat more, gain weight. every action you take will be with more resistance, helping you gain strength.
In summary, go buy $60 worth of ice-cream. Coles is having special on ice cream.

    • +1

nothin unsexy about a massive guy sweating, panting, trying to lift another spoon of icecream into his mouth

  • the weights dont come in a carry case do they?

    • Hi There, bought these for hubby today and no they don't come in a case. I saw others there that did but were only 15kg and barbell.

  • +1

For metal these were the cheapest I found:

    http://www.oo.com.au/Confidence-Fitness-20kg-Dumbbe_P27803.c…

Considerably more expensive. I eventually outgrew them and got another set of weights to slap on.

If you're in Sydney they have a showroom in Rosebery so you can skip the shipping cost which otherwise makes it pretty ordinary.

    • +3

After reading your post and looking at all the other comments…I can't see any comments where someone has said that thir goal with these weights is to allow them to drag their knuckles on the ground.

      • -3

Are you trying to say that people want to buy these weights just to have a fun lift here and there? Please be clear, what is their intention for buying them in your opinion exactly?

        • +2

          Hey Carlitos, roids are bad

    • You can still gain increased strength from using weights such as these, but increased muscle mass takes a bit more dedication like you have said.

    • +2

yeah, let me guess, PT or Gym owner? vested interest much?

      • Haha I was gonna give free advice, I've been slugging out for 7 years in the gym naturally. Just want to keep people realistic.

    • do we even care???

      • Does he even lift, brah?

    • +6

Will these weights make me as tough as you behind a keyboard?

    • +1

I don't imagine you are going to get many PMs after the sheer level a douche-baggery you shared with us in that comment.

    • +2

2 minute noodles? Are you even an OzBargainer or are you just a PT who spams to get clientele?
      MiGoreng FTW!

    • lol a keyboard roid warrior

  • Anywhere I could grab a nice bench to go with this? And where could I get the cheapest rubber mats so I don't break my apartment's wooden floor? And just maybe, a rack too?

  • can anyone give me an opinion on this?

    http://catalogues.bigw.com.au/portal/offerdetails/action_pre…

    looking for a bench.

    thanks

    • Pricewise looks like a good deal with the dumbbells and preacher bench included. Does not recline though, which I thought would be good option for doing dumbbell bench presses. Also the actual back rest seems a bit short, at least in the photo. I wish they'd have a display model in shop.

  • +1

    Heads up:
Bigw Doncaster dont have it (yet) in display, but if you ask them they go to their warehouse (or whatever is called),
the bar is a two piece set, everything is in a cardboard box (no plastic case)
the whole thing is really big, hard to carry by oneself, but doable ;)
    that's all

    • Good timing, was about to post similar.

Big W Campbelltown (NSW) don't have them on display but if you ask they have them out the back. We did parcel pick up (at the suggestion of the BigW worker) and the loading guys even put them in the boot for us.

  • Just bought the 18kg dumbbells which are also on sale for $30 (Not this set).

    Planning on returning tomorrow as:
    1) The dumbbells I bought come with clips at the ends; making dumbbells appear loose and flimsy.
the posted bargain comes with rotating locks (from picture) so this factor doesn't apply.

    But
    2) The plates are over sized and the gap between plates on dumbbells feels very less; didn't like that.
    3) The whole thing feels cheap; with plasticy smell; really doesn't compare to usual metal plated apparatus.

  • I picked up the last set yesterday from campsie NSW big w (the guy has to dig around in the back dock for it)

not the best quality but definitely bang for buck.

also tried emailing big w to complain bout how it used to be $48 but they said nothing they can do, its different product

so I told them to get fcuked!

    • +3

      Well that certainty escalated quickly.
