Of all formats, no rmvb :(
Why asians need to encode to those!!

        • Never even heard of that? Won't be missed!

        • +3

its realplayer…terrible player terrible format pretty much died out when x264 came in

        • +1

+1 I'd never expect a tv to support it. Usually found on anime and Asian movies. If you need obscure codecs use the $100 you save on the tv and buy a dedicated media player that supports it.

What the hell does Austalia's power production got to do with the value of this deal? Damn hippie movement is on the rise again.

      • because its ozbargain. whats a deal if you end up spending more on the overall cost. but i do say $500 for a 50" LG is tempting. just like the the Free baby Cot from Ikea. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93921#comment-1253353
Save $98 on a Plasma but spend double the amount in electricity over the lifespan of the tv.

        • +1

Hal his post is referring to the type of energy and production. Not cost.

    • +8

"A Plasma television does cost significantly more electricity than a LED TV. However, the resulting cost at the end of the year is not very big, about 40$ more for a 50" plasma. On a 5 year period, the total amount saved would be 200$.

As mentioned previously here, a Plasma TV cost on average 350$ less than a LED TV for the same size. Based on this, it will take 8.75 years for the total cost of ownership (initial cost + electricity cost) of a plasma television to surpass its LED counterpart. If you plan to own and use your television for more than 8.75 years, a LED television will end up costing you less in its lifetime than a Plasma TV."

      Source: http://www.rtings.com/info/lcd-vs-led-vs-plasma/power-consum…

Somehow I think 9 years is a pretty shitty RoI getting the LED…

      • +7

And this analysis doesn't even take into account the time value of money; the NPV would be negative

      • Is that a US website?
I think we pay at least double the electricity cost they've used in their analysis, though i don't have a bill handy to check

        • I pay $0.22 per kWh, double the default value they have there.

      • +2

Plasma are also better quality as well. Just need a darker room that's the only bad part.

    • +1

The power consumption of plasma has been massively improved over the past few years due to the pressure from LCD TVs.

Plasmas used to use WAY more than LCDs now the difference is so much smaller it really doesn't matter for most situations.

By using insane amounts of electricity I'm forcing the government to switch to nuclear. Now everyone wins!

just a reminder once again…it's very glossy, check in store before you buy if this is an issue for you

  • does it have a LAN connection?

    • Bargain* … Plus this is not a reason to neg a deal, L2P

    2 x HDMI is a bit 2005 really.

    • +3

How much did this TV cost in 2005?

      • +6

No AV receiver (which only requires one HDMI input) is so 1995

    • Two on the side + One on the back

  • amazing price for big screen from known brand.

  • Thinking LG or Samsung

    • Go Samsung.

  • my 2004 plasma has 1 x DVI input + 1 x Analouge tuner

  • +2

I think this Samsung 51" plasma is a better buy for $50.00 more -
    http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/samsung-ps51e450-series-4…

It uses 119 kWh/annum (10hrs a day) less than the LG, Which is about $29.00 less a year.

    • +1

If you watch 10 hours of TV a day it is probably worth it… I hope there aren't people out there that do.

      • +1

Yes this is one of the reasons why the plasma vs led power usage argument is so pointless.
An led is going to cost a lot more to buy, which can pay for a lot of run time on a plasma.

        • -1

It's not so much the power consumption, it's the heat from plasma's, they pump out a lot of heat in comparison to a led tv.

        • My 51" Samsung Plasma is cooler than my 32"lcd. It the is barely noticeable.

        • Cathode backlit or LED, if its the former then you would be on the money, I was referencing the heat output compared to an equivalent LED tv to which the led runs significantly cooler.

        • It's the same thing, heat equals power consumption.
It works out about $0.12-$0.15 a day more for 10 hours use to run a new model Samsung 50" plasma. This LG is probably a bit more.

    • +5

      @luke73
The Samsung you mentioned above is not Full HD ( O)

      • +1

I missed that, thanks for the heads up.
Still ok if you mainly watch free to air, but not a fair comparison.

    • Not full hd

  • I have this TV, very happy with it overall, PQ is great and sound is not as tinny as most modern TV's. If you have windows opposite where your TV sits then glare will be an issue. Also it's not a "Smart TV", you need to bring your own set top box type device if you want to use iView etc.

  • -1

Does it come full of smurfs?

    • +1

wow - feel the smurf love!

      • I'm not sure how that comment was expected to attract positive votes. I'm not sure i get the smurf reference myself?

        • There are smurfs on the screen in the picture of the TV.

  • Looks like we're getting ready for 55''+ as the standard tv size or 4k tvs?

  • Looks like Bing Lee is having deal on the same TV but slightly more expensive:

    • +3

thanks for the heads up. now i know where to shop if i want to spend an extra $57

      • -1

Seems to be free shipping, so it will be extra 7 bucks?

  • Here is a review…
    http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/lg-50pa6500/4505-6482…

The bottom line: The LG PA6500 is a decent plasma television if you'll have nothing less than 1080p for cheap, but it's not the best value at this level.

    • +4

at $500 it might be the best value

    • -1

can we have an example of "best value"?

  • According to LG's website, this TV has 3 HDMI inputs, not 2.
It has 2 on side and 1 on the rear.

  • This deal has only sold out online - some stores still have stock. I just picked one up from Morayfield in Qld and they had a few left. I bought it as a gift so haven't tested for image quality but one in store looked good for the price. Tested for heat too and it was hardly warm - although the store was freezing so this may have been a factor. Considering the price, I may go back for another one for the child.
