  • nice find…
btw - are you referring to Laphroaig (ie the distiller) as the king of whiskeys - or specifically the 10 y/o as the king?

    • The distiller, well the brand. But IMHO the 10yo is better then the more expensive quarter cask.

      • Well, the quarter cask is the smokiest, peatiest scotch man has ever made :D
This one is quite a bit milder. I like both.

      • awwe - there are so many more for you to try
        the 15 / the 18 / the 25 / the 25 y/o cast strength / the 30 (reg and cask) / the triple wood
        just to name a few

a hear that quarter cask is not a simple one….

plus all the independent bottlings ….

I think dan murphy's still has an 18 y/o for around 90 bucks from one of the independents. (with amex deal you coud get it delivered for free)

      • I have to disagree, but since it's an opinion only, we are both right. Anyway the triple wood is better than both, or at least the first release was. ;)

    (10 Year Old) this week

    Happy birthday whisky!

    • +1

But it doesn't age in the bottle? So every day would've been the day it was born, and the day it was drunk…

      Wait, what.

      • Actually, it does age in the bottle, just monumentally slowly in terms of detectable change. I have a bottle of Edradour from my birth year, since it will age at a slower rate than me the trick is to drink it just before I

  • +1

This is a very good scotch. Surprisingly good for a 10yo, well worth the price.
It's on the smokey side though, if you don't like that, stay away :)

    • +16

Don't think it would be good for a 10 year old to drink.

  • This brand got a really good write-up on daring fireball. Also while they were loving hand crafted in the beginning they were recently bought out by Cointreau, so, expect quality to drop. I'm not sure if this is from the new company or the old one.

    • +2

Well if this was aged for ten years, they would have needed to be bought out over 10 years ago for it to be of the newer ownership. And that doesn't include how long it was in storage/shelf.

  • Laphroaig is the best

  • It's great. Wife hates that it smells like hospital disinfectant :)

    • I do believe that that honour should go to Ardbeg.
      Peaty and w/o the smoke.

  • they're pitching this drink at 10 year olds?

    • Only a 10 year old Chuck Norris could handle this Scotch neat.

      • +1

        Or a 10yo Ron Swanston

        • +3

Chuck Norris just went back in time and killed the 9 year old Ron Swanston.

        • +1

          Swanson*

        • +1

if Chuck Norris spelled it Swanston, then I'm going with Swanston

  • Great find, will be getting the local 1st Choice to pricematch this arvo. Cheers.

    • +13

      And I'm off to officeworks.

      • +3

Grab a couple of slabs of Reflex while you're at it. Goes down a treat

      • +1

you sir, win the internet haha

        • I don't want the internet.
          I don't have the space.

$35 or less in every other country that isn't a complete and utter rip off. Never bother with hard liquor in Oz. A complete and utter ripoff.

    • +4

So what you're saying is either we should move, stop drinking or start bootlegging our own?

    • +1

You can get a litre of the stuff at Singapore airport for about $40, ($87 in Melb Airport)

It just goes to show you it's the Govt tax which make sup the most
Well with excise @ 76.30/lt of alcohol, for 40% of 700ml bottle

      76.30 x .40 x .700 = $21.38 excise.
+ price of the nectar (say $30)
      + %10 GST
      = $56.50

markup isn't much, & the example above it'd be $26.50 in tax.

    • Almost everything in Oz is a ripoff. The lucky country we are.

Save money and spend it overseas.

Don't forget to use the cashback offers and order via DM's Click & Collect. Saves a ton if you buy often enough.

    • Or ING Direct's 5% off. $60.70

      • Must pay up-front (either CC or Paypal) for Click & Collect orders. So no ING Direct Paywave opportunity.

        • Cant you use a wishcard? Tap & pay gor that & then use it to pay online (works for bigw online)

  • if only it were the cask strength ):

    • not at this price.

the SMWS did a 9 y/o cask strength a few years back - pure joy
(but closer to 200 bucks a bottle)

though you could try and order this and sneak it through customs - I have heard many have been successful from laphroaig - though have not tried myself.

  • Delicious smokey Laphroaig… my duty free supply recently ran out, tempting!

  • Anyone know where I can get some cheap diet coke to mix with this?

    wink

    • -2

      Soda stream.

You can also buy some cheap scotch to mix with the Laphroaig, so that it lasts longer.

      • -2

i think there was a good deal on 1L of red label posted before - could be an interesting mix

hypothesis - laphroaig + red label = ??green label??

    • +1

Chuck Norris bursts through your kitchen window and round house kicks you in an unfriendly manner if you bring Coke too close to Laphroaig.

  • Are there any free shipping deals on at the moment? I am too lazy to go and get this. I had a look and I can't seem to find any :(

    • there was an amex deal for free shipping…not sure if it is still on or not

  • Not the king but a great whisky and an exceptional price!

  • -1

surely this whiskey was named by someone after they'd had a few too many

  • I don't want enrage people, but Laphroaig is $30 at my local liquor store in Japan. Most single malts don't break $30 here :D It's awesome (You can also get stuff like Jim Beam/JD for under $20, often $10).

    • -1

      Cool story, bro

    • Japan has lower taxation on alcohol and cigarettes than Australia.

    • Vintage Cellars near me has Yamazaki 12 year old for $99

    • Yeah here there is iron ore just sitting around in the ground for free!

How much do you pay there for it?

  • This and Talisker 10 Year Old are probably the two best value scotches in existence IMHO.

  • fantastic, I am almost out.
Now to wait for a special on lagavulin 16 yo, IMO the best medium peat out there for the price.

    • +1

i think you missed it…. dans had it on sale for 79 a couple of weeks ago…
fear not - it drops to that every few months.

  • Most people that posted here are clearly sampling the mechandise already.

  • The problem with the 10 yr old is that it is being bottled at 40% now as against the qtr cask at 48%.
It tastes gutless after a sip of the qtr cask.

    • +1

that's a fair opinion - but realise - not everyone enjoys the "guts" of cask strength scotch.

I have plenty of friends who enjoy scotch in general but struggle when I give them nadurra (glenlivet) / a'bunadh (abelour) / quartercask (laphroaig) etc..
even the balvenie 15 y/o at 47-48% is a bit much for some…

though I have not found anyone who enjoys peaty scotch but has refused a 2nd look at the 25 y/o laphroaig cask strength - starting to think I should have robbed a bank and bought 2 when it was on sale..

      • I completely agree about the majority not enjoying the cask strength stuff. Hence the qualifier about trying it after a qtr cask.
I must confess I always add water to get it to the 40-43% mark. It just offers a lot more even after the addition of water.

Have the 10 followed by the 18, 25 and cask strength to finish off and you are in business.

The Balvenie 15 varies from batch to batch, signature flavours are all there but it varies.
and you should have bought 2 of the 25. I did..hehe
