Optus Prepaid 3G & 4G Mobile Broadband Starter Kits Discounted

30

I helped a client to purchase a mobile broadband kit and noticed Optus dropped its prices for prepaid 3G & 4G mobile broadband starter kits since 1 March. It is a cheap way to buy the hardware. Unknown expiry date but probably 31 March.

When you check the web pages, they say the included data (3GB or 5GB) expire in 30 days. But the shop assistant told me (and I can confirm for the store-bought E3131 3G USB kit) that Optus has increased the amount of data (3GB to 5GB, 5GB to ?) and extended the expiry to 60 days.

Edit: If you hurry then the starter kits may come with more data and longer expiry than that shown on the web pages. I can confirm this for the E3131 kit store-bought on 1 March but YMMV. (Thanks Chux for the info.)

Type Gadget Was Now Discount

4G E3276 USB Modem $169 $129 23.7%

  • Sigh, just bought the E589.

the initial included data/expiry has decreased in order to facilitate these price drops. the information shown on the optus website is current. these changes were effective as of the 1st of March (ie: 4 days ago). Normally there is a period of time though between these changes where even if you are buying at the new price, the old inclusions are still applied for your activation.

See bellow for comparison between old and new inclusions, hope this helps!

    Model Was Now
    E3131 3G USB $89 with 5gb/60 days $49 with 3gb/30 days
    E5331 3G Wi-Fi $129 with 6gb/186 days $79 with 5gb/30 days
    E3276 4G USB $169 with 6gb/60 days $129 with 3gb/30 days
    E589 4G Wi-Fi $199 with 10gb/60 days $150 with 5gb/30 days

So the best plan of action is to hurry into an Optus shop, get a confirmation from Sales that you will get the previous data plan & expiry, and purchase at the cheaper price.

  • Just saw BigW catalogue, has the E5331 for $79 including 6GB data and 186 day expiry. Little bubble next to it states "everyday low price" which suggests its not just a special at the moment.

Anyone have any comments as to how good/bad this is? Thinking about getting it for access for a couple of iPads out and about.

  • basically i get $3 per gb + 1Meg/s from my Acer Liquid mt usb/wi-fi courtesy of TLS-activated Ipad data (2/3 off*$30 card). Compared with above table with about $20 per gb i think it's rather good.

Works in my de-branded K3771(vodafone) modm too, reliable indoor coverage which stays on yep.
