these seem to go for about $170 on ebay with free delivery…… makes this hardly any sort of deal.

    take your spamming advertisement elsewhere

You don't want to have one of these in your dash. If any part of the display can be seen by the driver, and you get pulled over for any reason (perhaps RBT), the police will have a field day.

I don't know exactly which regulation it breaks, but even if the police themselves don't know, they will easily hit you with a "driving without due care and attention".

Even though you may not use it to watch videos, I'm pretty sure most (maybe all) states have simply banned them, just like radar detectors are banned. And please don't try to tell me "it must be legal if they're selling it", illegal items are sold all the time, like fireworks, slingshots, flick knives, GPS jammers, etcetera.

    • Are you talking about touchscreen head units?

If they were illegal, why would most cars nowadays be shipped with some sort of touch screen system from factory?

I have an aftermarket one in my car (but looks factory) and have had no problems with the police at all. Sounds like you're full of it.

he is definitely not "full of it". i can confirm (i know people fined for it) that having a tv viewable by the driver while the car is running is certainly against laws.

i think (at least you used to be able to) get away with it if they are wired up to not turn on when the cars on (or i think in park for an auto)

        • A TV yes, but this isn't a TV? If you're referring to the camera part of it, how is a reverse camera any different to this then?

Most are set to not be allowed to have the DVD part running unless the handbrake is on.

Again, show me where it says that having a touch screen head unit is illegal, as that would take a lot of current model cars off the road.

seems maybe you are taking "Russ" a little to literally when all he was doing was trying to make people aware that these are an issue….. in the hope that people do there own damn research for there own areas and there own laws…….. seriously pull the carrot out and cut the guy a break.

Most are set to not be allowed to have the DVD part running unless the handbrake is on.

its a single damn wire which is easily bypassed and if your installing these yourself (like i have in the past) you generally bypass this anyway.

touch screen or not, if the screen is visable from the drivers seat you are risking a fine. sure you can take it to court if your not in the wrong but some of the dumb ass cops ive come across dont know simple things like them being ok if they are disable'able via the handbrake. just because you have been lucky enough to be yet to be done for it does not mean others are in the same boat…..

did i mention….. cut the guy a break?

I'm not the one coming on here making grand claims that all systems like this are illegal. If they are, he should link to the relevant law that says they are. If not, then he shouldn't be saying that they're illegal 'cause he heard through a friend's aunt's cousin's dog'.

As I said, if these systems were illegal then they wouldn't be in new cars. Simple. If he had said 'playing a DVD while driving could get you into trouble with the police' then I'd of agreed, and doing that is stupid even if it wasn't illegal.

Saying that 'these' are illegal (ie. the touch screen head unit) isn't correct at all. And are being sold as OEM in modern cars. If they were illegal, then pretty damn sure these car company's wouldn't be putting them in at all from the factory.

This title of this post clearly says "in Dash Car DVD Player", and that's what I am talking about. I am not talking about factory-fitted touch screens - they can't play DVDs and videos. That's the ability which is banned.

A few seconds on Google produced a newspaper article about a driver being fined:
        http://www.thechronicle.com.au/news/apn-driver-caught-watchi…

Quotes from the article: "POLICE … caught a man driving along Ruthven Street into Toowoomba's CBD while watching a DVD" and "the driver was pulled over during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday morning and handed an on-the-spot fine" and "the device should not be in the driver's line of sight while driving".

  • Watching DVD whilst the car is moving is illegal. Whilst the car is stationary, it is fine no mater what head unit you have.

If the police pulls you over. If you can prove that the DVD player does not display images whilst your hand brake is not active, you are safe. You can still operate the touch screen head unit whilst driving, just not watch any videos.

I know some head units have speed sensors as well to deactivate videos. This will be a bit harder to prove if you are pulled over then the traditional hand brake sensor.

Snoo's link to the actual laws below casts doubt on your claim "If you can prove that the DVD player does not display images whilst your hand brake is not active, you are safe".

The law, at least in SA, makes a clear distinction between being stopped and being parked. A simple handbrake switch can't know if you are parked, or waiting at traffic lights with the handbrake on. You can also drive around with the handbrake on by only one click, so a video can still be played while moving. Either way, I doubt your handbrake switch theory will work in court, if the prosecutor is any good.

Also, my understanding is that if a police officer decides to charge you, and they are not absolutely sure the charge will "win" in court, they will often charge you with multiple offences, to make sure one sticks. They will often try to find a defect with your car by checking all your tyres and checking the lights on your car, and will probably also charge you with the catch-all (and probably impossible to disprove) "driving without due care and attention". The assumption of innocence does not seem to exist for traffic violations.

      • They will often try to find a defect with your car

failing that, they will just invent one.

had that happen on a completely stock laser (a turbo 4wd tx3) and tried to fight that but its written in the law books that if a cop does not know if something is a defect or not he sends you for a full inspection (at your cost of course) just to make sure. for the record i was not breaking any laws or anything (cruisin at under the speed limit at the time) and pulled over for no other reason but being a young guy in a turbo car and they had the defect book out as soon as they got out of there car.

If you're buying these to watch TV, just remember the old analogue system is disappearing fast. On the Xtrons website it suggests this model is analogue but there is an addition box needed to feed in DVB-T (Freeview) channels.

Regarding the legality of these at least in SA, skip down to section 299
