    • 583 reviews and still 4 stars, that's pretty good?

    • This deal is for 1.5TB not 1TB

          its a tough crowd

  • got 2 with thx

just my experience, they don't play well with mac. i have 2 and get unreliable backups from carbon copy cloner. just sayin'.

    • +2

What is the cause of the unreliable backups?

      • not sure what the cause is but the error message is that the backup was unsuccessful. i make 4 backups of my work, 2 to WD pocket drives and I was making 2 to these. I've since made the other 2 backups to seagate drives. I got errors with both Toshiba Canvio Basics.

        Mac.

format them as FAT32 and might work…

  • How does these compare to the 2TB WD for $105 from Amazon a few weeks back?

Is WD a better brand for Hard Drives?

    • WD is better IMO. All of my Toshiba drives have bad sectors.

      • Every brand I've tried has died. Seagate, WD, Hitachi, Samsung. I just had an enterprise WD drive fail two weeks ago. Sigh.

        • Drives die all the time. Drives are getting cheaper but QC has gone down hill with it.

        • So whats the best thing for me to do since I want to put all my movies on a Hard Drive. I dont want to loose them all fi the drive dies on me for no good reason.

        • Backup to another drive…

        • Get 2 drives, each from a different manufacturer. Backup one to the other with free software like Crashplan or something.

burn them onto a blue-ray or DVD, they never die

dvd-r discs use organic dyes that degrade. bluray will last longer, but it's unproven as they're relatively new.

Keeping a backup on multiple discs is going backwards too. People like having all their movies on a hard drive so they don't have a stack of discs to keep or maintain. :)

        • Seems its not the HD problem but the problem is you hahaha

        • DVDs last 70 years I read but backing up to them will take ages and ill have to use loads of them

        • I have discs from 2006 that can't be read as the dye has degraded. What manufacturers claim and what happens in real life often don't match up. I switched to TY discs years ago, hopefully they actually last this time.

        • I have discs that are supposed to be backup but are now mouldy/fingus and degraded in ways I haven't a clue about.

  • .

  • Bought the wd from amazon and found it can't be opened and used internally in a laptop. Any ideas if I'd have success with this one?

    • Why not?

      • WD use a proprietary interface so no go without some solder work. Easy enough to open, if any knows about this toshiba and what brand drive would like to know before buying.

    • I have one and ->

      1) I can't figure out how to open it without destroying the case.

      2) It appears to be significantly thicker than the 1TB drives I have been able to open (WD and Seagate 1TB portables for example).

I think it has an extra platter, and that it would be too thick for use in a notebook PC or MacBook.

      EDIT:
I paid $110 delivered from Amazon for mine.

      • Sorry do you have the Toshiba or the wd? Cheers

        • do you have the Toshiba or the wd?

I have a Seagate 1TB and a Samsung 1TB, and the Toshiba 1.5TB - not the WD 1TB (memory error and I could not edit).

Also, it is the Seagate 1TB that is the 'thick' one. The Toshiba 1.5TB is thin enough - just appears to be glued together.

I had to get all three drives out next to each other to get things 'straight' in my mind.

        • Great if its thin I'll go ahead and buy one. Have a few go flex 1.5tb and WD 2tb passports which were all too thick.
          Cheers

  • Got 2 as well. Great deal

  • Thank you, snapped one up

I have been using the 1tb Toshiba Canvio Basics and have no problems.
Was in a DSE store today. The price was $129.
