  I'd recommend anyone considering purchasing supplements read the relevant wikipedia page. The vast majority of people will see no benefits from taking supplements, and in fact many have been found to have no effect.

  Most people in our society are deficient in something or another, though you would need to have a comprehensive blood test for all of the vitamins & minerals to know. For instance, I read the other day that heaps of people are low in Vitamin D, and beside maintaining the bones, it is also involved with immune function. Vitamin D deficient children are more likely to develop autoimmune diseases such as asthma and hayfever.

  Fish oil and krill are definitely not snake oil, neither is glucosamine. All supplements that definitely work for folks with joint problems.

  A lot of psychiatric drugs are just snake oil or harmful in the long run. Antidepressants are no better than placebos.People are easily tricked. There are hordes of people taking psych drugs but the number of people with long term mental illness increases each year. I also read that influenza vaccinations are only minimally effective are preventing influenza.So it is not only the supplement industry that makes false claims about their product's efficacy.

  That said probably a high strength multivitamin is all a healthy younger person needs. American brands are best.

    i think a healthy younger person would best benefit from a healthy balanced diet…

    if they are low in vit d (one of the examples you gave) - a multivitamin wont do the trick.
