  • How does a HP and Toshiba compare to a Lenovo and an Ausu laptop in terms of build quality?

My experices with Asus, hp and Toshiba. Toshiba will last longer.

Mine are not, had two Tosh's before deciding to steer clear of them. Asus have always been good to me though

i think all depends on your luck and range~

        • Agreed.

Way accurate. HP is severely unreliable.
        Never again a HP.

      • Well can I say that you pay a hefty premium for the Apple product? My 1st gen MBP is still going strong. Just done a full maintenance, replaced the left fan which died and put in an SSD but she's purring like a charm still. It seems insane to be paying almost $3k (2006) for a mainstream laptop today.

        • Agree about the apple premium. Also agree about the $3k for a laptop - I never understand why people pay so much for a laptop if they can get one from a decent brand (e.g. Asus or Toshiba) for half the price which contains the same component but a different outer case.

    • Had and seen many Tosh failures, seem to be very fragile.
Had a good run with HP's but others have not??
Currently using Asus… had a failure one month after purchase but is ok now over a yr later.

It is not so much the brand but more the mixture of hardware quality used and the spec level of the laptop you choose.

Sometimes what reads to be a good unit turns out to be poop :-(

Yeah, a bit of luck involved…

    • To be honest, they all come from the same OEMs based in Taiwan (but made in China due to cheap labor). I guess what you should be looking at is their services/warranty etc.

Price vs features for those with i5 cpu and discrete gpu, there are no "deals" here compared to recent prices at MSY, officeworks, and shoppingexpress. (Not looking at touchscreens or ultrabooks since they are not what I need.)

    HP Pavillion M6-1116TX $790 @HN or $689 @MSY http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=9730 OR $699 @Umart http://www.umart.com.au/newindex28.phtml?id=10&bid=5&sid=101… (HN list the GPU as a 7760M which is a typo, it's a 7670M).

There may be more as I haven't done a thorough search.

If you are suggesting that HN is overpriced: I never even bother to look at HN laptop specials on Ozbargain, because their standard markup is so insane that even with a discount they wouldn't get close to the MSY's and Shoppingsquare's. I think these posts are a waste of time unless they include a link (or multiple) to specific models that can't be had cheaper elsewhere.
