  • Is it easy to clean?

  • It's a great machine and @neonchang - yes, easy to clean. It back flushes steam and hot water through its lines internally and the waste goes into the drip tray.

The value however isn't so great. I got both the machine and grinder on eBay for $50, 2nd hand - but used a few times only by people that don't even drink coffee.

  • If you're in Bris or Sydney, Breville have a factory seconds store. I got the BES860, the big big brother to this machine with a built in grinder for $295. All factory seconds products have full 12mth warranty. Mine is just over 2yrs old, makes around 5 coffees a day and has never faulted.

  • The bes800 and free grinder have always hovered around this mark. Bear in mind it's a single thermoblock, meaning you can't pour espresso and milk simultaneously (coffee first, then milk otherwise you will burn your espresso). Pretty sure it does not come with a proper tamp, and comes with pressurized baskets (fake crema maker). Good deal for entry level machine plus grinder, but some people won't even consider this acceptable entry level. Be prepared to hunt down unpressurized baskets an a tamper if you want to get serious.

    • A fairly good overview. Having read all the reviews (usually by people who had tracked down non-pressurised baskets, I got one, expecting great things. I hated it. The only consistent thing about it was that it consistently made disappointing coffee.

I'd have loved to be able to get hold of the nonpressurised baskets to an idea of its true potential, but could only find them overseas, and couldn't justify spending another $40 (cheapest I could find at that time.)
