    Real world blurb.

Not a full auto. Need to manually steam your milk. Which is the way to go anyway (auto milk machines are cold froth on top).
Remove the chrome cover and throw it away. Just use the nib.

Steam milk first, then make coffee. A thermoblock is much better coming down from hot, than heating up mid coffee.

This is a pressurised basket. Will always taste like a pressurised basket.

Don't do a huge coffee shot. These things are designed to deliver 40ml max on the largest shot setting. Add hotwater to the shot if you want more volume. Will taste stronger than doing a 120ml shot. This will bring in thin bitter rubbish liquid.
Full coffee amount..minimal water, slow as you can get it without clogging. If it never clogs.. it isn't set right from the factory.

Sometimes you can't clog it and you need to open it and manually drop the burrs.

Keep the brew group clean, lube the piston orings yearly and descale regularly. Will last forever.

I refurb these things (new orings everywhere), set the grinder burr correctly and 3D print a nossle nib holder - sell for $225.

At this price for new..it's a good deal 👍

    • This is a pressurised basket. Will always taste like a pressurised basket.

      Expand this please.

      • It uses the brewing unit to create pressure in much the same way a pressurised basket for a manual machine does, so rather than the ground coffee creating the pressure and all the goodness being extracted from it, the pressure is being built after coffee extraction, which generally results in a thin espresso.

        • Any full auto machines that are free from whatever this is?

          • @nuker: Something like a Dr Coffee is about the closest to an espresso that I've seen in an automatic - they use a 16g coffee dose compared to 6-10g in most automatics

          • @nuker: Closest thing is a Breville Oracle. But it's not "full auto".

        • @wintermadness nailed it!

Many would be surprised to see the water that moves through the Delonghi unit moves through a hole about the size of a full stop.

Basically water brakes to slow the extraction instead of the coffee itself.

    • Great write up. I have an older version of this machine and it’s been excellent for many years. Since you refurb them, I don’t suppose you know how I might fix the water level sensor in mine? Float appears to be fine but the signal isn’t being sent/received.

      • It's a reed sensor (magnet sensor).

Are you sure your little magnet is still in the float?

Try a magnet on it directly, if dead, change the sensor for around $25 .

    • “Steam milk first, then make coffee. A thermoblock is much better coming down from hot, than heating up mid coffee.”

Could you elaborate on this please?

*oh - buttons and knobs on these is WAY better than a touchscreen. Get the old layout while you still can.

What you want is this: De'Longhi Primadonna Soul, Fully Automatic Coffee Machine, ECAM61075MB.
A few other models are also on sale

    • Exact same brew unit in ALL models.

      Only milk texturing is different.

      Milk wand is the best.

Don't forget extra $100 off if you have Amazon Business (use in the next 3 days)

    • Yep! Things I found:
      - The total of $100 (cap on 30% off promo) can be shared between different orders.
      - If you use the promo and return an item, promo gains are lost, cannot be reused. (Made a mistake ordering Mitsumoto Sakari knife, which is Chinese, not Japanese knife. Tojiro FTW)

    • thx. always thinking how to utilize the $333 quota.

  • Are there any good value coffee machines with built-in milk refrigeration? It would be so much easier than having to pour fresh milk each time

    • +4

No its not - anything that dispenses milk, with or without refrigeration, is a bunch of extra cleaning or milk going off in the parts, and more stuff to go wrong.
Manually steaming milk is the way to go and keep your milk in the real fridge.

[We have a machine with a little milk fridge at work and its a total pain, requires daily cleaning routine and flushing and the milk sitting open in there with a little milk line doesn't stay fresh as is isn't sealed and doesn't hold temp as well as a real fridge so has to be taken out and cap put on in the real fridge and fluid flushed through the lines regardless… and I've lost count of how many times a technician has had to come take a look at it - many times for lots of $s].

      As above..it's a yeah/ nah.

Milk coagulates and blocks things. Just doesn't work. The cleaning requirements negate convenience.

I have a Jura that has a removable jug you can put in the fridge.

After making a coffee I blast water down the milk hose, and then choose hot water to flush the outlet on the machine. But I know how it works internally. Signs when a bit of milk fat is stuck in place x. If you don't..you will go insane.

But it's still an aerated froth. Steam wand is always better and way hotter.

  • Oh bugger, I just bought the Philips 1200, but would have prefered a De'Longhi to replace my old one (that still works great)
