So as long as we stay on the one plan, we get this saving for first and subsequent payments? What I mean is that if I pay for a year now, when I re-new it 12 months time, will I still be paying the discounted price?

Great deal either way though, and one of the rare times I’ve seen someone use a term like “insane” when marketing and the deal lived up to the name. What’s the reason for this if you don’t mind me asking?

1 Moderator scotty on 03/10/2008 - 17:02 ¶

Maybe because of the extreme heat at Sydney today? :)

Yes this is definitely insane. Note that it says “for the life of the account” so I assume that you’ll get the insane discount as long as you are paying the bill. That means for their top end Australian hosting account (20 domains, 10GB data a month), you are paying only $41/year.

1 hightekhosting on 03/10/2008 - 17:37 ¶

fenerli:

Yes, all subsequent payments are at the discounted price :) If you pay for a year, all payments every year thereafter are at the same price you first paid :)

Reason: Because we can :p

Scott: We also do Plesk plans now, both Linux and Windows ;) and the discount code applies to both

Just reminder to all, it is for new clients only :)

Well it says for the lifetime of the account so I would believe that it is forever…

Ill have to see if there are any reviews out there on these guys as I am seriously considering this.

Might as well go for the best plan as 90% is only 36 dollars a year or something, just have to be careful of extra fees ie: addons or domains.

I also struggle to understand the difference between the reseller and the non reseller accounts, would someone like to enlighten me?

Thank you =)

Hightek Hosting uses CPanel. So for normal hosting you only get one CPanel account which you can host your website(s). For reseller account, you can create multiple accounts, and each account can then create multiple websites. So if you want separation between some of your sites (for easy migration later on, or to host someone else’s site but you can give them the control panel password to manage DB, email, etc), then reseller is much better.

Well. The top end reseller is only $5.5/month in this case. Might as well get that, create 10 accounts, and then sell them to your friends for $5/month each :)

1 fenerli on 03/10/2008 - 17:22 ¶

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. In fact, forget $5/month, I’d be content giving it away for free! If it’s reliable and good quality hosting, I may end up also selling it to clients from my web development work.

AussieMark - as far as I’m aware, reseller accounts allow you to have multiple domains hosted on one site whereas non-reseller are for a single site only. Correct me if I’m wrong, anybody. :)

Gravatar

1 fenerli on 04/10/2008 - 20:31 ¶

No, you can have multiple domains on the non-reseller plans too. A reseller account allows you to have multiple accounts, the main purpose being to give or sell these to others.

Edit: Scotty went into more detail. See his post above.

This is so cheap that I can’t resist but to signup with them. Yet, I don’t even need a hosting at the moment.

Just one quick question hightekhosting, is ssh enabled on the linux-based reseller/personal hosting plans?

My renewal for Jumba is coming up pretty soon, and I’ve been considering Hightek Hosting for a while, mainly because of their insane prices.

One thing I’ve learned though, with hosting you do get what you pay for. Are there any Hightek Hosting customers that can comment on their reliability? Perhaps even the rep himself? I’m seriously considering this deal, but I’ve been bitten before (Deasoft nuked my account altogether for no apparent reason, said it was a ‘mistake’).

I’m going to do a bit more research, but if any OzBargainers can comment it would be good :)

EDIT: Just looked at Whirlpool quickly and Hightek seem to get a good review. In a way I’m concerned about the longevity of a company who keeps doing ‘silly sales’. I think I will take the plunge and move over to them though!

Thanks for the feedback Kizza and Scotty.

hah yeah I also bought a hosting plan this year but with jumba - buy 6 months get 6 months free for 60. But next year it goes back to $120 and that is for the smallest plan. Jumba is good but this is a pretty hard price to beat..

I may have to switch.

I only have 1 website / domain currently as I am about to setup a e-commerce site but I guess I may have more domains / websites down the track so perhaps I should go with the reseller option?

@AussieMark,

You can indeed have multiple websites/domains within the same account and you don’t need the reseller account. That’s what the “Add-on Domain” option is for, i.e. how many extra domains you can host on the regular account.

Get the reseller account if you plan to create sub-accounts to have someone else manage them for you.

It’s just the control panel you use to setup your websites, e-mails, etc. - Plesk is an alternative to the more popular CPanel.

I found hightek pretty helpful though on the phone. When they had their 70% lifetime deal I gave them a call. Not sure if they are open on the weekend but I plan to call them on monday =)

You can also check the knowledge base provided above for an answer.

I didn’t see it on their site a couple of months back though so it must be new :p

Hi, seems like a pretty good deal indeed.
I just have some technical questions if you won’t mid me asking:

What is the maximum memory for PHP?
Is mod_rewrite installed and enabled?
Do we have access and control of a PHP configuration file (php.ini)?

I can’t wait to sign-up.

1 hightekhosting on 03/10/2008 - 21:12 ¶

AussieMark,

You can give us a call over the long weekend, no worries at all there :)

animasola, we do have mod_rewrite installed, so that should help you out there. With regards to PHP etc, you have the ability to set various php flags via your own php.ini file, so what you need to do can be controlled that way.

Let us know if there is any way we can help you, even if it means giving us a call or sending us an email :)

Absolutely!

All you need to purchase is a dedicated IP address and an SSL certificate, install it (or have us install it for you at no cost) and you’re away :)

By all means contact our sales team for further information or visit http://www.hightekhosting.com.au/ssl.php for more information on the SSL certificates and pricing :)

Yup, I believe that is the case. But you will have to pay for the subsequent renewals for your domain after the first year.

Yep, thats right.

If you pay for 12 months up front, we will provide a .com/.net/.org domain free for the first 12 months, then every year thereafter is normal renewal cost which is $15.95 per year

The domain offer is always available, regardless of special or not, providing you pay 12 months hosting in advance.

Sure, if we were just hosting, I’d worry too, but with the wide range of services we offer, we more than cover our own backsides to be able to do deals like this :)

But by all means, do your research on us and I’m sure you’ll be happy to make the switch :)

Anybody thinking about it, don’t, JUST DO IT.

I have been with Hightek for over 1 year now, their commitment, service, and friendly nature does not even come close with other hosting companies I have dealt with. Way ahead of the rest.

Never had any issues, and if I had minor problems, fixed asap, they have msn(for support) as well as the normal customer support department.

As for pricing, don’t think because you pay less, you get less. With Hightek, you get the best customer service, regardless if your on the cheapest plan.

bargaintick on 04/10/2008 - 12:28 ¶

Can’t say I’m happy with this deal.
Just signed a reseller account up for the 70% off discount (1 year).

Dale can make any promotion he likes, but it seems to be a tad unfair for the ones signed up before.

If this discount comes out in 3 months (1/4 year) since that 70% one, I’ll say it’s fair. One month gap is just way too quick.

Without domain name rego fee:

Price with 70% off for a year = $ 89.70

Price with 90% off for a year = $ 29.90

Difference = $ 59.80 per year

This is a reseller account, so staying for more than a year is most likely.
Fast forward 5th year, I’m losing $299… that’s $300!!!

Tough luck it may be, can’t say I’m happy with it.

Murphy’s law is that something will always change in price when you least expect it. We do not do it deliberately, we just do it because we have the power to do so and when we can make a saving, so can new clients.

Do you go back to Big W and complain that the bike you just paid $179 for is now $150 only a week after you bought it? I don’t think so.

To those of you who have signed up, well done and thankyou. It’s a pleasure bringing you on board and we look forward to a long relationship together :)

Gravatar

bargaintick on 04/10/2008 - 20:29 ¶

I read that some people did complain about a new range of MacBooks coming out when they bought the old range for only a week, and they did get the new ones, so please don’t bring up such analogy. Some managers can be more reasonable to customers than others.

Again, I do not mind you giving away insane sales. I realise that you have the power to do so. I just find the fact that you’re doing it way too soon really slack towards the customers who went for the 70% off.

Why did I dare to say slack? It doesn’t matter that the discount doesn’t apply anymore when you upgrade the account. The fact that new customer can just order the highest, top range of reseller account, and still pay $24.70 less per year than my starter reseller account for life pretty much says how unfair that is.

You will have a lot of people flocking to use the service now.
If you want the ones who pay the full price, 66% off, 35% off, 70% off to cover the cost of the 90% off newcomers, that’s ok. You CAN leave a larger time gap. But that’s how you do business, fair dinkum, just don’t expect people who registered previously to feel that they’re being treated fairly and happy about it.

Again, Murphy’s law it may be, tough luck it may be, we are covering for others’ cost.

There are people who are less than happy with this, I’m simply more verbal than them in this matter.

I am, however, quite amazed with the replies.
Not only it reflects poorly on how your attitude is towards customers who complain, but also towards your conflict resolution.

Revoking offer? That’s rather silly. Why would I want to shutdown others’ opportunity to get a good deal? A more reasonable solution would be offering current subscribers a CHOICE to upgrade their current account with 90% discount if they want to do so. Those who want to stay can stay.

How would this case work… we sign up now, pay for 12 months and get some free domain to use as the accounts home domain. At some time in the future once we are satisfied with the level of reliability of your hosting service we move our business domain to the account as a an addon domain.

Then at the end of 12 months can we let the home domain of the account (which we got for free) laps and use our business domain (which had previously been an addon domain) as the accounts home domain?

This is basically just a case of a new customer being careful about moving our hosting but we are willing to give you a go and if all goes well then we are on board. Hope the above makes some sort of sense.

Edit:Forgot… to protect against spam do you also offer anonymisation of domain name information? Could not find an answer to this in your knowledgebase.

“If plan upgraded, discount level will be lost”.
What if the plan is downgraded?

Gravatar

1 hightekhosting on 04/10/2008 - 14:59 ¶

If the plan is altered from the specifications that are included with the plan, the pricing will be altered to, no matter the change, be it up or down.

The discount code is valid for the plan you sign up with, not for any other plan. If you change it, you lose it.

What if something not part of the plan is altered, e.g. when i sign up, I add on a dedicated IP. If I decide I don’t need the dedicated IP next month and remove that, will the discount be lost?

thanks

1 hightekhosting on 04/10/2008 - 20:33 ¶

Dedicated IP’s are features and not alterations to the actual plan itself, so if you add one then take one away, thats ok :) You will not loose discount level for that.

What the difference between the Australian based and the US based? Are prices for US based in US dollars? Can I select the US based though I live in Australia?

1 Moderator scotty on 04/10/2008 - 21:48 ¶

Pricing both are in Australian dollar.

Australian based — your website hosted on a server in Australia. Probably in Sydney.

US based — your website hosted on a server in the United States. See their data centre list. They are generally cheaper, have more data allowance each month, but there are some other disadvantages. For example higher latency. Higher turn around time if there’s something wrong with the hardware, etc.

good evening fellas

wow what an unexpected bargain! gonna sign up soon after i read the T&C

this page (http://www.hightekhosting.com.au/aus-shared.php) does not show any details about the number of databases i can create, nor the size restrictions.

just wondering if i can get some clarification about this. im planning on running a drupal based site, and thats quite a database intensive system.

edit
now im having trouble thinking of a domain to register =\

@twig — I think from this reply, you can create unlimited number of MySQL databases (subject to your allocated disk space).

But I guess it does not matter now as you have already signed up :)

Dear all OzBargain members and new Hightek clients,

After 2 days of solid ordering, processing, registering and more, the response rate of this offer has been phenomenal, well beyond what we expected considering our previous market status.

That said, the feedback and support has been great and we look forward to continued service and support for years to come.

Unfortunately…and yes, we do regret to inform, that our Australian servers are fast becoming full, for both shared and reseller services. So full, to the point where we have already placed orders for more servers.

The problem at hand is that due to such a large response (I’m talking hundreds and hundreds of orders here) we may reach capacity before Monday night. If that becomes the case, we will not be able to process any further orders for Australian Shared or Reseller accounts (yes, I hear the awww’s now)

We have placed urgent orders for several new servers, stressing to our suppliers we need them now, but we’re afraid they may not get here in time.

If that becomes the case, we will be forced to reduce the offer down to US only plans =(

At the moment, we are still taking Australian orders but as I mentioned, servers are fast filling and if it keeps up at this rate, it may be short lived before tomorrow morning.

We will advise if this occurs, but we’re hoping not.

So if you wish to order a plan, I’d suggest you hurry!

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

If you have any questions, I welcome you to contact our sales team regarding this matter.

Regards,

Dale Evans
Manager

Dale - very well done giving us warning of the impending overflow possibly changing the offer. I suspected that may happen, it was why I stayed up till 2pm on Friday night to decide what I wanted to do - BTW thanks for the guidance chat on the phone somewhere around 1am in the morning of Saturday

Nice to see planning rather than a frantic cancellation :)

Again - Well done!

A comment on a number of comments above.

Yep and I haven’t voted, so I remain on the fence. I do personally wonder about the sustainability of 90%, but given that the following makes most sense….

Some complain that the way the deal is structured that if you have to change your plan, you will lose the 90% discount. Well just remember this is a promotional deal. To give 90% off there does need to be a “catch” otherwise why not offer 90% off everyday.

I am NOT criticising the “catch” just pointing out that Hightek would be expecting some - or many more - transitions from this 90% deal otherwise its not profitable to them. If you like the service then you will stay, if not you’ll either live with the restrictions of your selected plan or move on. I would doubt given the annual cost with lifetime 90% discount, there would be a need to drop down a plan

Especially since the drop down would give you less for much more, so selecting a higher plan even with excess capacity given the price would probably be the best strategy to utilise.

This promo is also cross posted on Whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1063491, so the demand on this will be higher.

I’m a bit confused on the first year’s free domain offer.

I’ve got a domain name in mind but haven’t registerd it yet.

I’m ordering the Australian Bronze Hosting with yearly payment, however if I select:

“I want Hightek Hosting to register a new domain for me.”

It adds the first year’s domain fee to the shopping cart.

I’m obviously missing something here, can anyone help?

Cheers.

Thanks :)

Yes, that is correct.

In order to take advantage of the free domain deal, you need to order the domain upfront.

The domain you order will be also the domain hosted. For more information on ordering with hosting/domain, please read our terms of service, as some clients want to register the domain but change the package to another domain later on.

Please read our terms of service people as we will not be held responsible for those who do not read it and ask questions later.

I can’t make this work…

Can you please explain in detail how I would order a yearly account with the first year domain free?

I tried ordering the domain, then adding the yearly package, but I still get the first year domain fee added, see below.

Perhaps the first year is credited?

Australian Shared Hosting - Australian Bronze Hosting (mynewdomain.com)
$170.00 AUD
[Edit Configuration]
Domain Registration - mynewdomain.com - 1 Year/s
$15.95 AUD
[Configure Domain Extras]
Subtotal: $185.95 AUD
90.00% Recurring Discount: -$153.00 AUD
Total Due Today: $32.95 AUD

Some people have been ordering dual accounts on their orders. This is ok as the offer is for new clients and their order is done as a new client.

Once you have placed your order, then you can no longer use the discount code.

More to be found - good and bad by googling “3ix hosting”

Y’know why I’m here? Because I’m waiting for 3IX to repair my hosting. The server has been restarting every 30-60 minutes all day and then when I tried to log in to Cpanel I got a really worrying message. It basically said “we hacked your website - screw you”. The cut-down version of the conversation will live support was “our technicians are looking into it kthxbi”.

For a site hosted in Australia, hopefully a reliable site, this is a very good deal. And with a free domain chucked in, I’m sold.

Critical Error
Could not connect to the database

Tried ordering a domain and gold US shared hosting

Can you please fix this? I hope the site stays up at least till I order this.

Update: site is not responding now. Looks like I have crashed the server. Time for an email to hightek hosting.

Update2: It worked. Started a new browser session and I was able to complete the transaction.

Thanks Hightek. I hope the servers don’t crash on the site visitors.

I checked out the web and found some good reviews on hightek hosting.

Seems everyone speaks very highly of Dale, and I also called him myself to ask his advice on what plan to get.

Still trying to decide between a shared and reseller account but I better make up my mind quickly =)

Update:
Okay figure I must as well go with the top reseller option and I can always onsell some of my space if I need to. Very new to all this stuff hah, couldn’t find out what Plesk hosting was with a google search.

Surprised HightekHosting doesn’t take AMEX

I assume you read the welcome email from Hightech.

Just to remind you, this is in the first paragraph:

“If you have requested a domain name during sign up, we will register this domain once your payment has been cleared, this can take 24 hours.

Dear New Client,

Please keep in mind that your domain name will not be visible on the internet for between 24 and 72 hours. This process is called Propagation. Until your domain has Propagated your website and email will not function, …”

Well they got back to me after my second email and my ticket submission disappearing saying there was no domain in my order. Which is weird because its a big part of the order process. I just didnt want to make waves too early, when my invoice said $0 and there was no option to pay but I had an account with order confirmation and welcome email.

I had the $0 invoice problem too.

You need to login / go to the website and click invoices then PAY INVOICE.

I kept looking around and clicked on ‘my hosting packages’ but that does not let you pay it. You must go to the invoices section.
