Qantas BNE/SYD/MEL - LAX $850 Return (approx) Incl. All Taxes and Fees Booked through Expedia.ie

2210

EDIT - Fellow Ozbargainers have confirmed this is working well into 2013

This crazy low fare appears to be only available on the Irish Expedia site. I have tested with various dates and can confirm the search works between September and early December 2012. I successfully booked return flights for two pax BNE - LAX from 26/10/12 - 16/11/12, and also two pax MEL - LAX 18/11/12 - 9/12/12. Good luck fellow Ozbargainers, hopefully many people get this price before their site gets Ozbargained!

Forgot to mention, I tried to book with my 28 Degrees card and it failed. 28 Degrees called me about 15mins later to check it wasn't dodgy. Unfortunately I had used an alternative card in the interim and copped an international transaction fee. Oh well not to worry, at this price who cares?!

        • You can add $100 and bring back another 23kg suit case! That's what I did.

Best to not bring anything and buy eveything back, even suit cases

  • Not bad for 90 status credits and 14,982 FF points (anyone who's booked a ticket, can you confirm what class you're booked into? Still wondering if the sale bucket you're booked into qualifies for FF or not)

    • +1

The class is discount economy - class O. So you're right it's 90 status credits and 14,982 FF points. Yes it will qualify for FF points - here's the link https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned

      • For those interested, 14500 points will get you a $100 Caltex fuel card.

Anyone know the best currency boutique in Sydney? I'm looking to get some US cash.

      Would like to know also.

Try KVB kunlun, here's the web link:
      http://www.kvbkunlun.com/en/html/contactus/Contact_address_s…

I always go to this place for foreign currencies, the exchange rate they use is very close to the RBA rates.

      • +1

i go to kvb kunlun too in the citibank building - but the lines are quite long (ive waited over an hour b4) so if im not exchanging large amount, I usually find one around there that has reasonable rates

And i think lusicul means FX rates rather than RBA rates :)

        • Agreed, never waited less than an hour with them. Only worth going if you have time to spare or changing a lot of money as the rate difference isn't that great compared to other good deals.

  • They do February and March too. If it was a month later I would so book…

    • Coachella?

      • I'm going for Coachella. Got late Mar to mid Apr.

        • What dates and where from? I've been looking for the same purpose but cheapest is 1200EU

just booked 18th november - 22nd of dec for $850! EF YEAH! SO keen! got my super cheap NZ tickets in July and then these after!

Anyone know if there is a restriction on booking fares that originate in Australia on international websites? I looked through the rules and restrictions associated with this fare and there are some restrictions…just don't understand if this is applicable to web bookings.

    ** GENERAL RULE FOLLOWS ***
BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND AREA 1 FOR OLSP1 TYPE FARES

    • Well technically they were sold in Ireland? Or where ever the hell expedia.ie process the sales?

    • Wow, the airline ticketing system sure loves that caps lock key…

    • +1

i just purchased…. and now im skeptical! is it possible that they revoke it and then you're left to pay for all the international transaction fees, taxes etc?!

      • +4

TICKETS MAY NOT BE SOLD IN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND.
        - FOR ANY FARES ORIGINATING IN AUSTRALIA

Seems like it, although it would be quite harsh to revoke legitimate purchases on the grounds of T&C that no one ever reads.

        But on the bright side…

TICKETS MAY ONLY BE SOLD IN… KOREA, DEM. PEOPLE'S REP. OF

North Koreans will be lining up to visit the USA :-)

        • Where on their site is that stated?

    • According to tarhls above, he/she was able to book albeit a month before we knew :/

    • BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND AREA 1 FOR OLSP1 TYPE FARES

TICKETS MAY NOT BE SOLD IN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND.
OR - SALE IS RESTRICTED TO SPECIFIC AGENTS.
OR - SALE IS RESTRICTED TO SPECIFIC AGENTS.

There are so many ways to read this.

The OR's give outs. For example

Was this a Specific Agent? If so then it implies its ok to be sold.

THE ABOVE CONDITIONS PROHIBIT THE SALE OF

So since we dont know if the agent has not elected to participate etc, then as a consumer is it ok we can assume since it's on the website, that they are. And if not isn't it an issue between the airline and the agent

How do we search by lowest price, rather than dates??

  • +5

Poor Euros, their economies suck and now their getting ozbargained

    • Actually in terms of economics this is good for them, well only slightly but good non the less. The ticket prices are obviously being subsidised/made cheaper by the airline, in which case it is QANTAS, so Expedia isn't losing out there. For every ticket sold Expedia gains a little profit which is taxed at whatever the Irish tax rate is and that is where they win, not to mention positive cash inflow from overseas to Ireland (while little since the cash is only going to flow back out to QANTAS for the ticket and presumably the US for Expedia, but there should be some taxes and salaries paid to those in Ireland).

Australia is currently losing in this deal in terms of economics.

  • Sweet deal. THANKS OP. Trip booked in March 2013 - NCAA, NBA & spring break. F**k yeah.

far out… i REALLY want to go to vegas for my birthday now

  • Hmm the cheapest i can find is 656 pounds = 1050 dollars?

    • +4

      It's in Euro's, so it's $850.

      • Ahhhhhhhhhh that would explain some things. Thanks!

  • Any for january?

  • Booked Brisbane to LA late Nov to just before Xmas. Just over $850 per person! Very happy family going to the US. Best bargain this year I reckon! Many thanks t the OP. Amazing.

    Guys,

Try http://matrix.itasoftware.com and put in dublin as the sales city and AUD as currency. Then you can search big date ranges based on how long you want to stay

    • Wow this is an awesome clean website, never heard of it before thanks for the tip !

    • +2

Brilliant web site. Just had a play and it delivered some airfare results far superior to potting about on Zuji, Expedia, Jetabroad, etc.

The itinerary printout giving a complete rundown of charges and taxes is excellent too. Just the thing to give to Flight Centre and get them to match it.

      • +1

Would be great to hear if they do :)

        • I remember going to Flight Centre in 2009 to get an airfare to Europe. The quote was $2400 or something silly like that. I had a play with lastminute.com and managed to get to Europe via Japan for $1400. I took the internet printout to Flight Centre and got them to match the booking, plus add in a stopover stay that wasn't possible with a web booking on lastminute.com. The staff didn't look overly pleased (probably little to no commission), but it worked.

    • cheap fares for departure in late october, november, february, march :(

    • Cheers

Looks like it's a O class booking, FF are a go!

    • Is dublin only cheap location? any try other locations? duno if makes any diff.

    • Best website… ever!

    • -1

Not sure if I am missing something here. I booked Jetstar to Singapore return in Dec/Jan and the cost directly from Jetstar is nearly $100 cheaper than this website

  • +1

not getting anything leaving in december :(
this would go oh so nicely with my barcelona trip (thanks to ozbargain)

  • you absolute legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • For Mel to LAX I'm seeing these ranges as around the $850 for return flights

    October to Early December
    Febuary 1 to Mid March

  • would been over this if it was in summer… wonder how the winter gonna be like there :\

    • +1

LA's winter is about the same as Sydney's? We've got similar climates.

    • Have to agree with Trance N Dance, LA is beautiful in November and December is warm and pleasant but if you drive 10-15 hours into the mountains you can have snow and freezing temps.

  • OP is a legend. Great catch! For context thanks to this deal I cancelled my Nov-Dec flights booked using FF points (that cost me 96000 in points and 774 in fees) and got an almost identical itinerary (1 leg isn't direct and is slightly longer for $850.

  • How do i find the cheap flights?! cheapest one I can find for sydney to LAX is 1200 euros per person!! someone help!!!

  • +1

Thanks OP. Family of five for just over $4000, great deal thanks.

  • Anyone able to get some cheap prices leaving and returning Melb in January? (eg 3 jan - 25 jan)

  • IS there a problem booking flights from Irland site for flights originating from AUS?

    • no problem… i have booked a flight that was departing within 4 hours leaving from sydney to phuket. But since purchasing the tix in Dublin i got that flight… this i cant do on any website yet alone travel agent within same day… unless im at the flight counter at the airport…love the timezone difference :)

  • +2

All the searches I've done so far have said "Only 2 tickets left at this price!" for a majority the cheaper tickets. (searched 15+ dates)

Is it true or are they just trying to encourage impulse buyers?

EDIT: haha I closed the browser and went to the site again and now it's not saying 2 tickets left so I guess it is there just to encourage impulse buyers.

    • +1

Or people had tickets ready to buy but cancelled?

      • I don't think they would reserve them like that, would they?

  • Thanks, just booked a return flight in July and August, costs about €1100, though not comparable to the $850, still nearly $400 cheaper than the price from Qantas website

  • Won't let me book cheap flights past 12 December, so I reckon the cut off date is around there somewhere.

    • December 10, according to momondo.

But that's just for the end of 2012. Prices drop again in Feb 2013.

    • It is also next year. It would probably stop during the peak time but definitely is next year as well

  • Can anyone tell me the best flight comparison site for within usa

    • hipmunk.com to find your flight, book on expedia or similar.

  • any chance of these flights running out by morning? I want to sleep on it while I wait for mates to get back to me

    • +1

Only 49 minutes, and it will be morning. ;-)

Seriously, no way to tell. It's a gamble either way, in my opinion.

    • Hopefully not since I'm in the same situation but with over 4.5k click throughs already, and probably more OzBargainers visiting during the earlier hours of the morning, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Might still be some meat left on the bone if your mates can get back to you before 8 though.

    • +2

i really am surprised by how many are impulse buying a trip overseas.

      • I've been wanting to go to USA for years. This is my perfect chance. Whats the problem?

      • Yeah.. Me too.

I suppose it depends on what kind of position you are in.

  • +3

Woooooooo!! Thanks OP! Heading from SYD to LAX between 1st Feb and 28th Feb. Epic snow trip here I come!

    • why do i have to start my grad job at the end of jan :( no snow for me

  • this is ridiculous. Awesome price - I hope this works out

  • +2

    lastminute.ie same deals

  • Thanks OP(you are a legend). Just booked from MEL to LAX yayyyyy

  • Anyone know about the general hotel/motel prices in Los Angeles?

    • +1

Mostly very affordable. I generally find their 3 stars are equivalent to our 4 stars here. Usually get solid buffet brekkies included too. You'll find something good for about $100/n.

  • I'm waiting til tomorrow too, hope there's some left…

  • Wooohooooo I'm off to the US of A!!!!!!

    • +14

      oh the irony

  • +4

I wouldn't pack bags yet folks. I've very recently had great, borderline unreasonable fairs canceled by Expedia. Had confirmation and payment taken from the credit cards and now I'm stuck waiting for 6 - 10 weeks for them to return my money. Just my 2 cents.

    • Yikes.. that is a worry. How long did it take for them to tell you it was cancelled?

    • Hmm, I hope not, surely that would cause all sorts of problems with connecting flights etc, for example I have connecting flights to Perth which I was going to book tomorrow.

    • Lets hope this isn't too good to be true

    • Pretty sure that's illegal on their part.. I'm no expert on Australian/Irish law, but at least in the UK if a company takes payment then that's a legally binding contract and they are obliged to sell you the item at that price. Its how the websites get around pricing errors on their sites as the price is listed as an 'offer to sell', but to stop them losing millions, they only recognise it as a sale once payment has been taken.

    • I've got confirmation numbers that work on the qantas website so I don't see how they can reverse it now…

  • Just booked with AMEX and I am marking this as the most impulsive buy in my last 4 years at OzB.

Paid on CBA AMEX Platinum and my fee breakdown came to:

$821.83 processed by Qantas Freight in Mascot
    $20.28 processed by EXPEDIA.IE
    $1.14 processed by EXPEDIA.IE

So it looks like Qantas are processing these payments locally (not sure if that's standard/non-standard). The $20 Expedia fee is probably the 15 Euro booking fee plus currency conversion and the $1.14 fee is probably a credit card holding fee and will probably get refunded.

So if that's all the charges I receive (and there's no separate currency conversion fee - there generally isn't with AMEX), my total will be about $840 with AMEX, not 28 Degrees. This obviously includes travel insurance then.

Flying late Mar to mid Apr in 2013 (on an A380 no less). As travel period will be within 2 years of my last visit, I don't to pay ESTA fees either.. score!

OzB, a gift and a curse..

    • Actually, it looks like instead of being processed by Qantas Freight in Mascot my transaction has been updated to say it was processed by Qantas Airways in Ireland, thus incurring a poor exchange rate and additional currency fees.

My total is now $880, which is still fine as I was expecting it to be around $900 to begin with. Could have used 28 Degrees but complimentary travel insurance and award points makes up for it.

Curious as to why it was showing up as Qantas Freight in Mascot and now says Qantas Airways Ireland.

To those who have booked enjoy your holiday. Have a great time and experience.
Very jealous and perfect price for same trip i want in 2014 lol.

Cant complain as i have have been on 4 holidays in the last 18 months and have 3 and a half weeks in asia in october.

  • Couldnt find any cheap flights around Easter or March & April. Must be sold out.

  • ahhh c*@#$!

i just finished entering my details and it spat up an error saying "flight prices have changed" and they went up to normal prices and now i cant find cheap flights!!@# :(

  • +1

    yep gone :(

thats what I get for waiting to ask my work

Ah well for those that got the fare have fun!

  • Whats the average rate inc Taxes from Brisbane to LA?

    • I paid about 840-850 for a return flight with 1 leg (to LAX) with 1 stop and the return flight direct, direct both directions was around $1050.

  • looks like it is expired, cheapest price i can get is €828 from Melbourne, tried Nov,dec, jan, feb for 2 weeks to a month

    • +1

      2 Tickets / Roundtrip
      MEL Melbourne to
      LAX Los Angeles

      Leave: Thu 15-Nov
      Return: Fri 30-Nov

      2 adults €1.064,00
      Taxes & Fees €562,40
      Administration Fee €30,00

      Total €1.656,4

      • and thats € 1 656,4 = 2 144,75039 Australian dollars

        • +1

I think that should be still cheaper than booking directly from Qantas, is it?
