Qantas BNE/SYD/MEL - LAX $850 Return (approx) Incl. All Taxes and Fees Booked through Expedia.ie

2210

EDIT - Fellow Ozbargainers have confirmed this is working well into 2013

This crazy low fare appears to be only available on the Irish Expedia site. I have tested with various dates and can confirm the search works between September and early December 2012. I successfully booked return flights for two pax BNE - LAX from 26/10/12 - 16/11/12, and also two pax MEL - LAX 18/11/12 - 9/12/12. Good luck fellow Ozbargainers, hopefully many people get this price before their site gets Ozbargained!

Forgot to mention, I tried to book with my 28 Degrees card and it failed. 28 Degrees called me about 15mins later to check it wasn't dodgy. Unfortunately I had used an alternative card in the interim and copped an international transaction fee. Oh well not to worry, at this price who cares?!

        • Yeap still cheaper than QANTAS direct.

It's AUD$3313.44 from QANTAS… still a massive $1200 savings though! (But then there should be other airlines that should be around the $2200 mark)

I cannot find any $850 (or 600 euro) flights from SYD to LAX in Feb,March,April 2013.
How are you guys finding these flights?

I tried matrix, momondo and the expedia.ie site…

    help?

    I am looking for a 5 week trip in march-April 2013.

    • If you look up a few comments; it looks like it sold out a short while ago..

  • Yep, looks like it's been Ozbargained.

Expect angry calls between Qantas lawyers and Expedia - I don't think these fares were ever meant to be sold to Australians.

Fingers crossed for all you guys who got tickets.

It's rotten if they go through and cancel tickets for anyone with an Australian address.

For the pessimistic guys; I'm not sure if it means much, but my booking exists on qantas.com, so it looks pretty positive :)

  • I have searched mel to lax from Sep to Jan & cant find any flights for $850, cheapest is about $1100?? Maybe all the cheap ones have gone

  • Looks like it is over - price is now 1,209 Euros with Qantas for same dates I was getting 656 on last night..

  • Definitely confirm your flight booking with the airline before booking any non refundable accommodation or internal flights etc. Have been burnt by Expedia in the past. Their inefficiency with an "issue" caused a great deal of stress. They lack communication and instead just pull the pin on your booking at very late notice. Make sure you confirm all bookings direct with the airline!

  • so gutted I missed out!

I booked flights last night for 2 adults and 2 children. Im still trying to work out whether Ozbargain is saving me money, or just costing me more… :-)

    • Same here, but for $3k return (4 people) I am hoping it'll stop the nagging about going to see Disney. Good old OzB, you've cost me, but I'm sure it'll be worth it:)

  • Thank you OP and OzB!! So happy with this deal. Also used the Qantas confirmation code on the expedia itinerary to check the booking status on the Qantas website and the flights say 'confirmed' etc. :D

  • Best I can get, even for the dates posted is 814 euro… which roughly translates to pricing available through au sites etc. Is there something I am missing?

Edit: I see, deal now expired.

  • Booked last night, got 2 adult flights return for about 1800 AUD. Great find OP. Same flights are 2600 from the qantas site.

  • Yep, I am spewing I didnt jump on these last night. Oh well, good on you guys for not hesitating on such a great deal, and an A380 too!

  • Snooze you lose

  • So what happens now, has anyone used this site before do we get tickets sent out or is it just the confirmation number?

    • I've got second confirmation email that lists QANTAS confirmation codes which work on their website to manage your booking. The same codes work for checkin so I guess that's it, put them in and print your boarding passes.

  • I am just curious how the OP know about this deal? It is on Irish website and the sale is for flight departing from Australia ?!? And I don't even see this deal advertised on that website.

  • Bought 2 return fares from Brisbane last night - thanks OP. We received the booking reference email from Expedia, but as yet the Qantas site is not accepting it. Would have thought it would come up fairly quickly. Getting a little nervous, now…….

    • I was able to see my booking in QANTAS using the second confirmation code. Try again?

      • Nope. No luck using the booking ref yet - if that's what you mean ? It says the ref is to be used with Qantas, and it was the second email.

        • Did you enter QFF details with your booking? I was able to view my booking via the frequent flier portal/choose seats.

  • Worked using the FF portal. Thanks. Strange that it doesn't come up on the normal Qantas booking page…..

  • Didn't manage to get in on time, but following what has happened (mainly to punish myself for hesitating). Has anyone called Qantas to confirm their booking, see if the deal is legit?

For everyone who has booked, getting "Confirmed" on the Qantas website is not sufficient to ensure you have a ticket. Log into http://classic.checkmytrip.com with your booking reference and check if an e-ticket has been issued. There should be a number beginning with 081 if an e-ticket has been issued.

    • awesome, mine has a 081 before it.

    • Mine has 081 and says e-ticket issued. Also under the notes section it says "RETENTION" as well as something about Seattle.

Here is another link to check you e-ticket and itinerary

    https://eitr.amadeusasia.com/index.aspx

    • Thanks

This gives a little more than the other site. It now shows my ticket details and even my seat allocation (I splurged with the $20) and booked these via the Qantas website, and it lists the Frequent flyer number as well.

BTW found a few seats in economy that are on the upper deck of the A380

Checking the internet I find that apparently these seats are part of the new A380's configuration that will arrive soon

      • Are the upper deck economy seats any better than regular economy?

        • In terms of the seat itself it shouldn't be
But IIRC the seating up top is 2-4-2 which is much better than 3-4-3, the seats on the side have a little gap between them and the window so you get a little bit more space, especially for the one sitting at the window. If I was flying on a A380 my preferred seat would be upper deck window!

        • Since these haven't been available before and I am yet to travel, I cant say. It could be a bit of a gamble. But it will be different as T&D says

It is just in front of the galley, but on opposite side to the toilets. Will be interesting as its in the premium economy section, and upstairs also has two galleys one for business class.

But in terms of looks those downstairs will think we are something as we climb the stairs… Yes I know thats grasping at stairs…

        • +1

Lol, I flew economy with Singapore and they let you climb up and down the rear staircase as you please, it's nothing special, just as long as you don't go into a different class, they couldn't care less. Heck they even offered me chips and drinks when I finished climbing the stairs. (Tip if you want snacks and are situated at the rear the upper rear galley usually has heaps of food when the lower deck galley's are running low). Definitely prefer upper deck than lower, not as many people and I like the curvey roof feeling (felt more like a normal plane than a crammed box).

Even though the super cheap flights are gone, the irish expedia website still seems cheaper for Qantas - e.g. flights Bris to LA 10/10 to 31/10 are 1220.80 euros = $1583.45 but on the Qantas website it's $2033. Only other things I can find close to this are China Southern for $1409, which is about double the flight time.

Total cost to me (for flights) will end up being $740 as I'll redeem QFF points for a $100 fuel voucher (suggest you all do the same). When there are rock bottom fares like this around, I'd much rather the cash than the miles.

$740 return to LAX on an A380 during the Easter period 2013. Can't wait :)

  • Hi Guys, I just checked it for following dates
    Departure – 1 Nov 2012
    Return - 22 Nov 2012
Price is $750 Euro, not as good as $650 Euro but still good price flying A380 both ways.

    • How, I plug in similar dates and I'm getting 812 euro? Where are you flying from?

      • I tried Sydney to LA on 1 Nov and then LA to Melbourne on 22 Nov using milticity route.

        • Thanks mate

  • Booked flights yesterday through with the deal from Brisbane to San Antonio return = $1499 AUD. Best price I could find elsewhere flying Qantas was $1999 AUD mark, It's still cheaper than V Australia for the same route.

  • 719 Euro fares are back up on the website :)

  • so wished i could cancel my VA flight and re-book on these prices arrrghhh!!!!

  • Anyone else had a call from Expedia telling them their flights have changed? Just got a call from London, saying I'm now required to stopover in Sydney…

    • What date is your flight? We are booked direct from Melbourne in early September.

  • Can you give more detail? Are they changing the origin or adding a stopover where are you flying from?

I ask because this could be bad!

    • I don't think it's anything to worry about - my flight from Melbourne got cancelled, so they moved me to a flight ex-Sydney. Means no A380 for me on the trip to LAX which is too bad, but what can you do.

      • Ah thanks for checking back, thats interesting though as it means they definetely have you as flying :)

  • This special has been active again for the last couple of days - i think it now expires on 4 June.
    Good find OP.

    • Do you know what dates are the specials on?

  • Can someone tell me which dates they put in to get the prices? I tried looking up early December and the best prices are around $1200 Euro return.

    Thanks very much.

Use these instructions to search for dates that the special rates apply to (posted by another user during the original special).

    Guys,

Try http://matrix.itasoftware.com and put in dublin as the sales city and AUD as currency. Then you can search big date ranges based on how long you want to stay
