Nokia Lumia 920 - $696 Outright (Unlocked) at Telstra Stores (in Stock as of Today!)

470

This morning I continued my every-other-day ritual of walking in to the CBD store on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Bathurst Street to see if they finally had the Lumia 920 in stock. Just as I turned to walk out the door in anticipation of the familiar "For god's sake its still not in yet! *rolls eyes*", the sales rep in fact replied "Yes!".

Not sure how many they have in stock, or of the situation at other stores, but they definitely had a collection of some in black. They also had one white one but its their demo phone and not for sale.

The deal is $696 outright, which is a whopping $3 cheaper than the deal from last week.

So far I am absolutely loving it, its a thing of beauty and I am thoroughly impressed by Windows Phone 8. Yes it does feel hefty in the hands, but its honestly a non-issue ("sturdy" would probably be a fairer description). In the pocket it feels just like any other phone.

You're welcome.

Dan.

  • I'm guessing it's locked to Telstra?

    • +1

      Nope. Unlocked.

It is "Telstra branded", but all I've noticed with regards to that since this morning is a Telstra logo on boot and an extra category in the store. Apparently all Australian stock will Telstra branded too?

      • +2

"Apparently all Australian stock will Telstra branded too"
        better bloody not be :@

        • Yeah, I'm not getting it from Telstra if I have to view a big fat Telstra logo on boot.

        • +3

Does it need to be rooted to remove the branding?

  • +1

This is a bargain, best price on GetPrice is $739 + shipping (presumably grey import and exuberant shipping fees).

HN are doing it for $820 with a BlueAnt S4, which you can buy yourself for $37 USD from here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83441

Great phone and the Whirlpool thread is going gangbusters: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2017104

    • +2

Do the "exuberant shipping fees" reflect the joy of the retailer at being able to charge so much?

  • I guess you can't get it online since all I could find was S/M/L/XL plans?

    • +1

Looks that way, says in the heading "at Telstra Stores "

    • +3

Yeah sorry, I'm not sure. It wanted a URL to let me create the bargain and that page seemed the most appropriate.

If you're looking to have one posted MobileCentral.com.au have a deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85408) for $699 with free postage that may suit better.

      • +1

Thanks Brent! Thanks Dan! Thanks guys :)

  • Price is RRP, so don't be worried about the price going up

    • RRP is $829 which is why HN are selling it for this much. Others, e.g. All Phones have been selling for $735.

This is certainly not a standard retail price. There is not one retailer selling for $696. Whether this is considered "standard" for Telstra is immaterial as it is still a bargain.

      • Allphone are selling this?

Didn't think they had them yet, price online still says coming soon?

    • +1

Given RRP of $829 and this deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85408) previously being markedly cheaper than the competition and scoring 34 unanimous positives it made sense to create this, being cheaper and in stock.

So you tried to buy this deal today and was told no more stock? Or are you just speculating?

      • So rather than being a bargain it should just be the cheapest place to buy.

Spoke to JB, Telstra and other places to find out availability prior to and on release - Telstra couldnt even tell you when the next ones are in, or when pre-orders will be delivered!

  • There is almost no stock in any stores at all, see http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2007103

    • +1

Yup. Main Perth shop got 17 and sold all of them by the time I got there at 9.07am. The smaller Telstra shop in Perth got 1 and sold quick.

They say they will get more stock on Friday.

  • Price is the best you'll find but if you haven't bought it by now, you probably won't get hold of one.

  • +3

super awesome phone is super awesome.

  • Great price for an excellent phone!!

  • if you want it on contract you can still get it through telstra business section not the personal mobile.
ive got mine coming on thursday outright.

    • Do you need a ABN for that? I was on the telstra chat thing this morning and they said they couldnt help me…

      • im not sure, i would assume you do. so if you do have one great because obviously they have left a batch for business'.

        • Damn. I meant to get myself one last year but never got round to it :(
I'll just wait till Friday and go to the store then.

        • You can get a sole trader ABN in 15 minutes from the ABR website.

Lol, your trolling attempts are even cuter. You cutey!

I went to a George St store this morning (~8:50) - apparently their flagship store - and found the following:

    (a) a modest queue,
    (b) some of the staff did not know what a Nokia Lumia 920 was,
    (c) there was no indication that it was being released today,
    (d) they had 15 handsets - only 1 in black, assorted of the rest,
    (e) one person had pre-bought 50 for his company but was told that they could not confirm the stock was ready,

In the end, a strange way to launch a great product like the 920 but very happy with the phone.

    • Oddly, every Telstra store I've ever asked 3/4 and all their staff I've asked at different times knew of the Lumia 920. This was a month ago.

  • Is there a version without 4g? hardly a feature worth the additional expense for many users.

    • +1

      no

    • +2

      lol

    • No

    • +1

If you import one from AT&T (around $500~) it will have 4G bands that don't work in Australia :)

Unfortunately though it won't be unlocked, or unlockable for a period of time.

  • +1

Great price for Aussie stock! SO TEMPTED.

Stoked this is selling well, too - deserves it.

  • +1

I think it's a decent phone, I've had it for a month now, but there's one thing i cannot stand of it, the edges are so curved, coupled by the slipper material, it falls out of my hand really easily, wish it was a lightly less rounded on the two edges.

    • +1

      Buy a phone cover?

    • Really? I've got completely the opposite, not slipping out of my hands at all (well, not quite as non-slip as the HTC 8X). I've had mine for a couple of weeks now, and the sheer size of the phone is making it a little awkward to hold.

If weights an issue, go to the gym…

      • +5

Well said. Honestly who struggles holding 185g?

      • Man, this is a stupid argument. Obviously no one is having trouble picking up the phone, but maybe 185g is too heavy? It might be too heavy to take for a run, it might be a noticeable weight when your previous phone wasn't, or maybe people just want a lighter phone?

Smaller and lighter is desirable, and this is a heavy-ass phone. For some people, it might not be a problem, but I don't see why people are so derisive towards people who don't want a phone this heavy - the only phone I can find that is heavier in recent years is the Dell Venue Pro, and that has a full sliding keyboard! I have yet to find a heavier Android phone (including the 5" Galaxy Notes), and no iPhone has come close to this in weight.

For me, I still want the phone, but I'll definitely be popping into a Telstra store to see what it feels like in real life before I order one.

        • Its to be considered, saying this 4.5" feature rich phone is heavy…. Sorry to say but a lot of features carry a lot of weight,
If you don't want the wright then the 820 is the phone for you, but complaining a phone has this much weight with this much features and build quality (In reference to the Samsung's which IMHO feel too light for their own good)

        • +1

Smaller and lighter isn't always desirable, some people see a heavier weight and a solid feel as a sign of quality / durability.

Then there are those that are mainly concerned with appearance, size and low weight. There is no one phone that will fill all segments.

      • +3

I'm sure most of the people complaining about the weight have no problems picking up a 200g block of chocolate or bag of chips.

  • -6

Too heavy! If you drop it, it will break, unlike lighter phones.

    • +2

Really?.. Strange that the lumia 920 was able to get run over by a car, whacked with a plank of wood and thrown 10 metres in the air without cracking the screen… yet the 'Light' SGS3 and Iphone couldn't even pass the Drop tests :-|

      • +3

        Because its a Nokia

    • someone did not pay attention in the physics class :-P

      • That said: I'd rather have a lighter phone too, and one with a different OS. And one that is significantly less expensive.

If only the Nexus 4 was back in stock. :-(

    • Yea you're right, the ground WILL break if you drop it. The phone though, that'll be fine.

    • lolwut

  • +1

That is a good price. Let us know how you find the app support over the next few months!! I personally am giving WP8 6-12 months to see how good the app support is. That is my only concern, everything else is brilliant with that phone!!

    • +1

Sensible comment..This is what is holding me off too…There are many aps in there but still need many more. It will get there when they have at least 10% market-share may be by end of next year…We do need a third eco system.

People who complain about weight go and have a play with the phone you will know its just a stupid argument instead you will feel its a quality product and the operating system is very fluid.

    • Didn't MS say that 46 out of the top 50 apps have been or about to be release for Win8?

    • Yeah for me my banking, guitar and mp3 streaming apps are not on there. Even spotify I couldn't see when I last checked.
Talking to MS business specialists they think it doesn't matter, and that is true for business, as this phone will provide email, internet access, document management and the novelty factors of camera etc. But if you look at all the phones out there, although business is still very untapped I believe, it is the consumer market that boosts sales, which is more important still…but also focussing on business to extend your sales base.
It's the problem I faced when approving different devices to be used that meet security policies, ISO standards, industry compliance SOX compliance etc.
It will be more prevalent with the Windows 8 pro tablets, and these will smoke the business market I believe compared to current iPad and Android tabs. But this element is still in the phones I think.
But that aside, yeah the app support although supporting 46 of the top 50 apps. How many people perhaps use one of the top 100 apps? 100 million globally??
As I said, just give it time and we will see, and I hope it works out well as I would easily move over to a Windows phone if I had all the support that my iPhone gives me.

    • +4

They said that about the Xbox 1 back when there was Nintendo, Sega and PlayStation.

      • nokia isn't a new entrant to the market a la MS. they're the sega of this rodeo.

  • Just had a play with one of these at Telstra CBD store in Adelaide.

Screen didn't wow me as much as I thought it might, I didn't notice the weight either (coming from an ip4).

  • Went to the Queen x Ltl Bourke St store in Melbourne, they wont be selling them outright until a week or two when they become readily available apparently.

I wonder if Hardly Normal will price match?

  • There's something I don't completely understand here. People are recommending that you go to the store to have a play with it before making up your own mind about the weight - but don't all the Telstra stores have their demo units tethered to the counter for security? How can you accurately gauge the weight of the phone with the security tether attached?

    Good post though OP, thanks.

    • +1

Just imagine it's a couple grams lighter.

    • +1

yer its pretty hard to tell
especially those fort knox style tethers.
      like a giant grip mount.

    • You just have to ask - they'll usually have an untethered one out the back, or an employee will have one you can hold or something.

  • Its interesting to see how these phone prices are being heavily discounted by Amazon for the US market with hundreds of dollars off the premium range. Indication of the pressure of the Nexus 4 limited releases. If you can hold out for a few weeks we should see them all tumble locally as well. http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/ref=topnv_tn_unlck?ie=UTF8&node=2…
Amazon has a two week backorder for the Nokia Lumia 920 at $USD580.
