Constant nbn Wi-Fi Signal Drop-out When Gaming

Recently moved house and signed up to MORE nbn with the Commbank Yello offer. Set up and configured the included router device which is a NetComm CF40. Normal internet usage is fine on most devices such as the TV and phone however I've noticed during gaming the game stutters and I get the disconnected logo throughout the entire game (almost every 5 seconds it temporarily disconnects then reconnects). My ping is low. I bought an ethernet cable and connected directly to the router which has stopped the stuttering gameplay.
Does this mean it's a router issue? interference (I heard microwaves can cause interference issues?). Hardly any other devices using wireless apart from the TV and my phone and the router is 1m away from my computer.

When I tried playing a game via mobile hot-spot the dropouts weren't happening..

Contact MORE first, and check what they have to say? If it fails, try a different router ? try while the microwave is turned off ?

      LG strikes again.

      • Few understand this post, but I do and appreciate!

    • Have contacted and opened a case with them through their "24/7 self care portal" a few days ago but no reply.

    • -5

If the NBN signal is getting to the router as it seems it is, its not MORE's problem.
Could be configuration of the router in which case MORE might be able to offer some advice.
They are however not experts in gaming setups
      Alternatively contact Netcomm directly

    Move provider.

    • +2

      So move more or less

Clearly a wifi issue since everything else works, are you using 5ghz? There's a lot of interference on 2.4ghz.

    • +5

The fact the issue is not present via ethernet indicates an unreliable wifi connection. As stated above make sure you have 5GHz enabled and are connecting on this band. If you have dual mode 2.4/5 active on the same SSID the 5GHz signal might be too weak so you are switching to 2.4

    • Both frequencies seem to be enabled on the router but no option to specifically choose the 5ghz option. When I disable 2.4ghz, devices dont seem to be able to connect to the internet.

      • +1

Seems to suggest that is what everything is connecting on. Possibly due to signal strength, 5ghz is faster but loses strength quicker. Either that or the 5ghz network is broken for whatever reason.

What you want to do is turn off band steering in your router and see if you can connect to the 5ghz network independently (and hope that fixes the issue). It's in the documentation how to do it

That it's not automatically switching to 5ghz when you disable the 2.4ghz is worrying though, either your computer is for some reason only looking for 2.4ghz networks. Does your PC support 5ghz, i.e. 801.11ac? You can check that by going opening a command window and putting it "netsh wlan show drivers" and it will tell you the radio types. If you're using an old USB dongle or it's an older motherboard it might only support 802.11n (in which case it can be screwy with 5ghz at times).

        • Computer is quite new (MB is MSI B650M-A Pro Wifi) and when I was using internet at my previous place (different provide and different router) I could see both frequencies when searching for Wi-fi which is definitely not the case currently (just a single SSID that comes up)

Thank you ill see what I can do with disabling band steering

@sim777: just checking - have you screwed in the WiFi antenna to the back of your PC?

They usually come with the computer and look somewhat similar to this

            https://www.amazon.com.au/Eightwood-Antenna-Connector-Magnet…

            • @jk82: This. I'm embarrassed to say this happened to me and wireless and Blutooth were extremely weak after about 50cm distance until I plugged in the antenna. I'd never had one before and had no idea what it was! Just glad I figured it out myself before trying to return the computer lol

            • @jk82: Yes yes, computer was set up the same way at my previous place and had no issues like this

      • My lg smart inverter microwave would drop out my wifi when it was running, i bought an extender and set it to ap mode and there would be 2.4ghz and 5 ghz channels i just connect to the 5ghz channel and its fantastic! No more issues

game stutters and I get the disconnected

    Your wifi issue.

bought an ethernet cable and connected directly to the router which has stopped the stuttering gameplay

    Bingo, we have a winner!

  • Any firmware updates for the router?

    • Latest is March 2024. I received the device 3 weeks ago surely its been updated?

      • NetComm went bankrupt and was acquired again a few months ago. Good luck getting any new firmware.

Do you have nbn FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, FTTB or HFC?

      • You would hope so but admin view will soon tell you the version. Hopefully it's R6B029.

  • Have you checked if you can swap to a different WIFI band? Have you checked on your phone the WIFI quality via an app?

    • Both 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies are enabled when I log into the router but dont seem to be able to choose one over the other. I tried disabling 2.4ghz but my other devices didnt seem to be able to connect to the internet after that

      • My crappy netgear router when searching for wifi has the same
Wifi ID twice , one ending in 5G and one ending in 2.4G

  • +4

If the router is 1 metre from the computer, why are you not using Ethernet normally?

    • For real. Gaming on WiFi isn't a good use case. Streaming a show is great on WiFi, the buffering prevents you from noticing flaky connectivity. Gaming is real time, solid connection is everything. It's not a reliable solid connection, Ethernet is the connection type to use for gaming, simple as that. If the 1m cord is so bothersome to look at, then unplug it each time you finish gaming.

  • Router isn't near a microwave or similar that could be interrupting the signal? Busy household or similar? I had that issue, not gaming but watching YT, everytime the microwave would run the wifi would drop out. I moved the router to another room, all good :) Probably not the issue, but just a thought.

    • The issue is definitely there when the microwave isn't running (but plugged in)

  • +2

process of elimination from your story.

    Ethernet fixes issue.
    No issues on mobile.
Issues only on wifi on computer.

Issue is your Wifi card on the Computer. Either hardware or the software/driver

Since the issue is resolved with Ethernet cable, I recommend to leave it as is. Ethernet is always better then wifi

  • +1

Router being too close to the device it's sending the signal to could also be n issue. But if it's within 1m, why wouldn't you just use ethernet?

    • -5

Just trying to reduce amount of cords!

      • One

        • -1

          One less

      • +5

Ethernet is the last chord you want to remove. It is far, far superior to Wifi, especially given the router you have seems to be pretty shitty.

        • +1

I always say Wi-Fi is a complimentary technology to wired ethernet, not a replacement. If it's not a portable device in my house then it has a ethernet connection to it. My work laptop on my desk has a dock and so does my personal laptop both with ethernet connection.

        • Youtube videos on the TV are also starting to buffer. Any recommendations for decent routers?

          • @sim777: I had a telstra smart modem for a while and the signal was choppy in some areas, so I upgraded to an ASUS AX6000, didn't really improve the wifi strength at all, but less drop outs

It heavily depends on where the router is and if anything else is interfering with what ever channel it's on

            • @Danstar: I just bought the Asus AX6000 that came up on OZB yesterday hoping the signal strength would be much better. Maybe if the issue persists I will try relocate the router to a different spot completely

  • If you're in an apartment try changing the wifi band or switching to 5GHz. Other than getting an ethernet cable, you could get another router (I'm assuming you're using the one they provided).

  • -4

Check with your ISP if the dropouts are showing up on their side? If not, a new modern fixed my dropout issues.

  • -4

If you have HFC connection, then bad luck, you will have a lot of flaps or drop out, that due to the nature, I was with aussie broadband, it was really bad, get much better with superloop

    • Thats not only wrong in general, but irrelevant to OPs issue.

      • -2

That is what happened to me in my situation, maybe not applicable for others, but it bothers me….

  • +1

Wifi issue. Probably conflicting with same bands your neighbours are using and your routers cannot sort it out.

Or your other devices decided to start conflicting after the move and they reset their preferred bands.

Try a different router. It's your wifi. If it's fine on ethernet then thats it.

I would just use the ethernet.

  • +2

You can check your latency/ wifi pretty easily:
Ping your router from your computer
(Use a free ping tool like pinginfoview)
Ping (ip address of router) -t
(And anything greater than 1ms is a problem)
This will narrow down if the issue is from your pc to your wifi router (once that is ruled out, then you can move forward and blame your provider…. Or simply change your wifi frequency to a non-competing, non-overlapping channel… or do a firmware update on your wifi NIC or firmware upgrade on your router)
The other potential is the hosting server and your latency or distance to the server hosting your game, but start with the above.
FYI, you will never have that issue if you are Ethernet cabled in.

I always dropped out with More despite not having any issues with multiple other companies. Haven’t had a problem since switching. Have gone through must be 8+ now during promos.

Was drop outs more like every few hours though not minutes. Would login to the router and it was trying to connect again.

  • new routers have a setting called "band steering" disable that and you will get separate wifi ssid for 2.4 and 5 ghz
you may have to reconnect your devices to the ssid you want

    2.4 for long range devices

    5ghz for short range devices

set power transmission to high if needed

for gaming latency improvement, disable ofdma setting if enabled, set 5ghz channel to 36 Mhz, channel width to 20hz, if you need more data download speed (do download speed test in Google) go for 40 or 80, check how it affects at each change you make

you can test here after if each change

    https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat?test-id=2590a29e-…

    • I went into my wireless devices and did find they were connected to the 5ghz frequency. Despite this I found even streaming youtube on the TV to be quite slow (and buffering) for what I would expect from a 100/20 NBN plan. I ended up purchasing the asus TUF AX6000 so lets see what happens! as most people have commented I will likely keep the computer connected via ethernet

      • did you do all the things I mentioned in your router?

if there is something in between your router and TV, that's another thing to think about, to have direct line of sight where possible

ax6000 should serve you well but issues could remain

  • +1

Use ethernet for gaming when and where possible.

Your wifi issues could be result of something else like faulty hardware or interference or even static build up. You will need to narrow it down by process of elimination. Until then stick to cable.

  • How about try to keep both bands enabled on your router and select in your device manager (in your pc) to prefer 5g hz band frequency? This's way the pc only choose 5ghz band if available when connected to your wifi. The stuttering occurs when playing on 2.4 band wifi and your wifi has interference with other devices (wireless gaming mouse using a dongle, wireless headset etc). If your did it and can't connect to a 5ghz band, but able to connect to the usual 2.4 band. It means that the 5ghz band doesn't have enough range to the pc

  • Ethernet is the better way to get a stable connection. My PC is hooked to a powerline adapter as previously I used to get dropouts or spikes in the ping.

  • My exprience with Netcomm modems is they are ok. If the PC is right next to the modem, just use etherent, that's a no brainer. What NBN technology do you have? If it's anything other than FTTN I'd get a better router something like the GL.Inet Flint 2 or something from Ubiquiti like the Dream Router 7 or UniFi Express 7. If it's FTTN then put the Netcomm in bridge mode and use a other router anyway. Can always check the the Netcomm has the latest firmware on it too.

    • It's not a modem, it just has an Ethernet WAN port.
Yes, not using Ethernet in this case would be ridiculous.

  • Do you have any drop outs watching youtube on your TV (over wifi?)

    • no drop outs but I have to say youtube videos load quite slowly for what I would expect from a 100/20 plan. Im starting to feel like its a shit router

      • I think you’re correct.

      • You confirmed earlier that you can't connect to the internet via 5GHz, this is the problem there is something wrong with the configuration or device if this is the case. 2.4GHz is going to have all kinds of packet loss and issues (and is the band that is affected by microwaves, bluetooth devices etc) and will be really terrible especially in a dense environment such as an apartment.

  • I've not had a good experience with More. Only with them cos it's free through a CBA home loan.

    • What the hell!

      Free?

      • "free" - CBA home loan was slightly higher than other lenders

        • haha, why didn't you go with the other lenders?

  • I had a similar issue on mate. For me, my connection to my router was fine but my internet connection would drop out once in a while. When it drops out, my game won't reconnect until I restart the game.

The problem was on the provider's side and they had to switch me to static IP to fix it. I don't know enough about networking but it was something about CGNAT.

    • +1

OPs internet connection is fine when using ethernet cable.

      • Yeah, you're right. I apparently can't read.
        My issue was different.
